Title: Hayabusa Oscar
Description: Ki 43i Hasegawa 1:48 motorised

Loo CK - July 2, 2009 03:50 PM (GMT)
This is the Hasegawa Hayabusa Oscar build with the Eduard PE upgrade.
A relatively easy kit to put together, the real challenge will be the fiddly Eduard parts especially at the cockpit.
This particular kit features decals for the 64 Sentai which was involved in the Malaya invasion. However, the lack of camo in this Burma phase plane needs rethink as the Oscars in Malaya usually wears a green brown camo scheme.

fuselage halves joined and cockpit inserted. Apologies for the poor photo. More will be shot later but the details are not that visible once the halves are mated.

As usual C&C welcomed. Plan to finish this kit by this weekend.

Cheers

PLan to finish this weekend? Now who is the fastest pair of hands with cutters?!! haha

Looking superb!

PoohBear - July 2, 2009 11:41 PM (GMT)
Wunderbar ^_^

Control stick looks rather simple. Is it that way on the real thing?

masterqq - July 3, 2009 01:16 AM (GMT)
bro Loo..

cockpit look very good to me....is this one gonna be with heavy paint chips on the body later?

Loo CK - July 3, 2009 01:44 AM (GMT)
gents,
thanks for the approving crit. the build will be quick as I plan to ignore references, so I am trying hard not to look for any minuses in the kit. I am sure the stick is more detailed than that. the bird camo will definitely be chipped.

kay - July 3, 2009 07:08 AM (GMT)
instrument display panels comes together with the PE parts ? all i can say is 'BANZAAAAI' ^_^

Loo CK - July 3, 2009 10:48 AM (GMT)
Kay,
the instrument panels are PE parts with printed stencils for the gauges.
I painted the PE and scrapped off the paint with a knife so that the circular gauge frames will pop out.

moJimbo - July 3, 2009 12:27 PM (GMT)
this is interesting... looking good :)

Loo CK - July 4, 2009 02:55 PM (GMT)
looks like this weekend's plan is down the drain. My faithful airbrush compressor has decided to call it a day after 15 years of great service.....

PoohBear - July 5, 2009 12:25 AM (GMT)
Woh, bad news indeed. No chance of resucsitation?

Loo CK - July 5, 2009 03:01 AM (GMT)
Its making a whole of awful noise when it kicks in and its heating up. Likely the piston needs an overhaul because I had the oil topped up barely 2 years back.

Loo CK - July 5, 2009 06:15 AM (GMT)
This is the last progress before everything coame to a grinding halt.

The whole plane was prepped and cleaned up at the join line areas, though it can be improved with a bit more sanding, a coat of Gunze metal coat aluminium was sprayed on. The Gunze metal range can be buffed but the down side is that it will also rub on to your fingers so I had to Future coat it after that.

seen here, the alumn base coat is then liberally brushed on with some hair gel. Alternatively, you can use hair spray for the same effect.

user posted image
there is no camo scheme guideline I could find so the camo pattern was then referred to a B&W picture of an Oscar in Ipoh, 1942 in page 32 of the Sentai 64 book available from KAGERO by Krzysztof Janowicz ( don't ask me how to pronounce this! ) BTW, the book comes with a PE fret which can be useful.

The camo was airbrushed on with a mix of Gunze and Tamiya colors with some pre and post shading using a wet paper mask. I did this wing first to test for effect on the chipping. The red Hinomaru will not be decalled on but rather airbrushed later for the same chipped effect.
After completing the camo, the whole surfaced was wetted so that the paint will peel easier. A sharp blade and wire brush was scrapped along the surface to simulate paint chipping. I think the effect works and will be applied to the entire bird unless someone here convinces me otherwise.

Hopefully I can get a replacement compressor soon to finish the bird before the momentum fades. Hope to spin the propeller soon!

Cheers and hope to get some comments and suggestions. Criticisms welcomed too!

moJimbo - July 5, 2009 06:37 AM (GMT)
is there a specific brand of hair spray/gel to use? oh, FYI i never used them on my head

Loo CK - July 5, 2009 06:50 AM (GMT)
jimbo,
No specific brand, as they are all water soluble and will work.
The whole idea is that is becomes a temporary barrier that breakdown with water and is easy to chip off.

Have fun

PoohBear - July 5, 2009 03:14 PM (GMT)
Glorious Chips!

But, where's the Fish? ^_^

Loo CK - July 6, 2009 04:06 AM (GMT)
Managed to squeeze a bit more out of the compressor and the fuselage camo is half completed. More photos tonite and will try to complete it mid week.

Fish and chips? good title for the torpedo carrying Japanese Nell!

the actual colour hues. I need to shoot the pics in the right setup soon

the radial engines are completed too and its on to the undercarriage tomorrow.

The IPMS stockholm site has a very descriptive text on the colour schemes for the oscars and the fuselage will now need the anti-glare black and Hinomaru which were factory painted and not likely to chip like the field applied camo.

PoohBear - July 6, 2009 11:52 PM (GMT)
Richard's raygun has been making its rounds lately. ^_^

So, which type/make is your new baby?

Loo CK - July 7, 2009 05:15 AM (GMT)
Bought the sparmax compressor with the small tank. Light and mobile and good for moving around to in-laws in the long hols

Loo CK - July 8, 2009 04:18 AM (GMT)
A bit more progress and the main fuselage is painted pending the lower alumn/silver colour and of course to buy Gunze colour 57 from HHQ today for the wheel wells!

Anyone out there with a good set of reference colours as there are contradictions in the instruction sheet and the observation in the IPMS website?.... bummer

Loo CK - July 8, 2009 04:21 AM (GMT)
Drats,
HHQ is out of Gunze 57 Silver blue. Anyone to the rescue?

Loo CK - July 8, 2009 03:43 PM (GMT)
Managed to only take a pic as the camera battery needed a recharge.

The next step is the canopy which has just been applied a layer of the new masking sol by Gunze and am quite pleased with the results as it dries really clear and you can see the frame very clearly to cut the mask .
Will show some pics tomorrow.

Meanwhile, most of the PE have already been added except for 2 small little parts

Cheers

This will be the penultimate update as the is probably another 2 hours worth of works to complete the bird.
At this stage, the decals are being transferred so the bird is all shiny while the decals are crinkly thanks to the mark softer. The canopy has yet to be fixed pending some polishing.
After this, some of the decals need to be weathered and then the panel lines will be washed in before a coat of matt will wrap it up. Oh yes, have to get the battery......

The red circle, Hinomaru, is usually factory painted along with the black antiglare section with a superior paint so they do not suffer from chipping like the camo paint. For this particular bird, I will probably introduce so weathering to these areas only but the white stripes and the arrow at the tail will be chipped. This bird is wearing the 64th Sentai, 1st Chutai squadron leader's markings ( the white mid and diagonal wing stripes denote the leader's plane )

Loo...

Love work.. Me too must learn the hair gel technique..

BTW..Any encounter between Huricane and this guy, will be intersting to place the 2 models togather..

Loo CK - July 10, 2009 12:45 PM (GMT)
Thomas,
there were clashes between the Hurricane and the Oscars! I will format a display placard to compliment the displays.

Loo CK - July 11, 2009 09:57 AM (GMT)

Fabulous, and you did it so fast too. Put the battery in and do some posed shots as if were ground running :D

Loo CK - July 11, 2009 02:20 PM (GMT)
Shah,
thanks for the compliments.
I had a couple of shots with the prop spinning in the homepage article. Only problem is, there is no pilot! khahahah.......
might need to steal one from a Tamiya kit.

Blackheart,
hidung tu is actually the gun port.

Poohbear rightly pointed out that it should be drilled out!

Ahhow,
this is nothing compared to your AFVs.....
