Title: V-150 Mecar Gun
Description: for MGB 2009

Silantra - June 14, 2009 02:22 PM (GMT)
Guys,

here's my contirbution to this year MGB.... just like shah with his itik, this is something to kick the armour forum alive....

The kit is Hobbyboss 1/35th LAV-150 with Mecar Gun.... i did the first look review here

This is going to be an OOB build.........

Okay, let's get started..prior to starting any work, i wash the parts (months ago)...

The kit look superb...on initial inspection, i suspect this will be a smooth and fun build... i start working as per the instruction.

Amazingly, this kit came with some interior parts such as the engine, seats, driver seat and some control surface and sticks... This is shame as i plan to close all hatches and door later on...Anyway, just for the sake of pleasure, i install all interior parts as per the first step of the instructions.

A bit of advice for those who wishes to build this kit, there are many flashes and some shallow ejector marks in some parts... Please observed the parts carefully for flashes and dry fit everyparts. There are seamlines everywhere especially in small parts... so the smooth sailing i predicted earlier was disturb with a series of sanding and sanding and sanding....

Mating the upper hull and lower hull comes next... this is tricky also even i carefully mate them together with tape there still a few gap issues which were address with super glue and sand paper.... Advice- pls make sure the join surface are align together with a tape or a jig before gluing.... thanks god with my extra cautious i have to sand just a few areas and minimal filler are used...

All other parts are then assembled and installed. Flashes are observed again and again especially on the suspension system. But it was fun build so far.

The turret consist of 3 major assemblies which is tricky to get it done..after dried fitting and testing, i glued F8 to F6 first at let dry and then glued F20 next. There are still gap at the bottom of the turret rear.

The wheels and tires are perfect. I like the 'tubeless' tires or hollow tires hobbyboss provided... unfortunately i still hope they gave 5 set of wheels with one extra for the spare tires that seen in the merdeka photo parade... who want to cast pls raise your hand..!!!!

Anyway, if you read this far, i should congratulate you and rewarded your patience and time with these photos. I start to work last Friday till this afternoon and i estimated aprrox 7 hours to come to this stage.. as u can see i did a peek through the hatches to zoom the interior...

Very good start for MGB.
Let's all join forces and add more AFV this year.
Don't let the plane guys get all the fun!

Sil,
a lot of sink marks here and there. Good luck.

Tauke Loo,

yeah,,,this time let all the plane guys eat our smoke and one duck...

btw, sink marks indeed is everwhere..fortunately this wont be a problem since most of them are in the interior parts or in the inside of the parts.... not going to be visible.. so unless i'm going to show and open all hatches, this is not a big issue..

so tauke, where's yours?? for sure dah siap 2,3 bijik ni

Silantra - June 16, 2009 04:52 PM (GMT)
update of the day.........

i thought this is gonna be a smooth build but into my dismay it wasnt...
i start to work on every single pieces and found out there are too many flashes everywhere especially in the small parts... took me a few hours for a small progress.. most time spend on cleaning those flashed.
To add into my misery the instructions are confusing too... there is a step where it called for a parts that does not exist and i had to use my rusty old brain to figure which part goes there...
and most of the smaller parts are join to the sprue at a place where they should not be joined at all. As a result more cleaning job are required.. Why can hobbyboss join the parts to the sprue at a location where it easily to clean...??

ok, photos ..

replace the broken handle with brass

gap and uneven surface

these are weird

there are nothing to put put in these 'holes'...i look into the instructions a few million time but nothing can be put here... i guess i have to fill them later or wait till the end of construction and look for extra parts...probably they will be there

the clear parts...headlight are molded at the top... why cant they molded at the bottom...??? grrrrrrrrr

about 5 hours are spend just to get into this small update

tired and sleepy.............

yeah,,,this team let all the plane guys eat our smoke and one duck...

Smoked Duck...

Anyone got reference as to what goes on to the mystery mounting points?

The kit engineering and instructions could have been better but you'll pull through in the end :)

Silantra - June 17, 2009 01:44 AM (GMT)
Pooh,

from the references photos, there is nothing goes to the front hull but the parade photo showed two round thingy ... i think it's ok to fill the mounting hole.

I was unable to find anything either at the right rear mounting holes. I believed the 4 things that i installed are for the tow cable attachments or bracket... the holes?? hmmmmmmm maybe will be filled too

Silantra - June 26, 2009 08:07 AM (GMT)
another boring update.... these were taken last week but just to keep the armour forum meriah, better show some of the slowest update known to mankind, well considering how easy this kit may look.........

ok.. first, i hate the smoke grenades.... mold line is visible everywhere...making the clean-up work a real PITA. ALmost gave up and throw them all...
user posted image

there are 12 of them with visible seam line all around....so i build this homemade flex-i-file from sand paper and sprue...i made 2 of this
user posted image

this work took most of my time... grrrrrrrrr

and to make things worsen, wallaaaaaaaaaaa a clear hook!
user posted image
what's on hobbyboss' mind when they decided to mold the hook in clear. With this, it requires extra work and furthermore it's hard to see this small hook... grrrrrrrr

the rest when smoothly. LAst night i prime the kit and there are more errors that i found...

that's all folk.... boring giler aku!

choongwk - July 1, 2009 08:49 AM (GMT)
Dear Silantra,

Good looking build. Looking forward to seeing the finished model.

Keep it up!

Cheers!

sky_tokyodrifter - July 1, 2009 11:36 AM (GMT)
huyooo abg sil,

gilalah teror tu buat hook, rasa mcm nak mintak satu untuk sangkut baju dalam impreza gua aja hehe :P ni kalau IKEA tengok pun pening wahahahaha. Superb details bro ;) Loosing time is normal but in the end its going to be worth it bro ;)

PoohBear - July 1, 2009 11:58 PM (GMT)
Moving this one over to the MGB section.

cheers

Hi guys,

I had a look at the Polis V-100 parked at the Police Museum. Seems the front spare tyre is not bolted on but actually held in place by the front winch chain and hook.

I tried several green shades but at last I decided to used dark OD... a mxiture of tamiya OD + black - i dont know the ratio coz it a try and error ratio until i get the desired color... belasah aje..still not 100% siap...the rear brake light will be modified... the red is not right!

Zaidi, ni aku nak comment ni... bersiap sedialah kau...

Why did you use Olive Drab for the V-150? From the pictures that I see, it looks brighter. Any reason for the OD? I use Tamiya's Flat Green for the Ferret but might change it to the newer camo paint (the green looks too dull plus I don't know how to do weathering).

In the first picture in the latest update, the vehicle looks a bit odd. Is it supposed to be like that? Looks a bit kontot like Oompa Loompa... Maybe because the distance between the tyres make it looks like that...

In the fourth picture, is the antenna base supposed to be that thick? I think it will look much better if you just wrap the wire to smaller diameter tube. Looks too big lah for a 1/35 scale. The base I mean not the wire. The wire looks just nice.

One suggestion, kalau dapat sand off the glue on the headlight protector and make it flatter, it will be much better. Bagi flat sikit kat belah depan tu.

Last question. Is it supposed to be bling2??? I tought only the Police version is bling2?

My five cents and comments..

Imran,

thanks for ur inputs...

for the colors, this is very pening kepala to decide..and based on the discussion between Major, Richard and others in the review thread, the color should be between OD and British Green....
Like i wrote, this is the 3rd attempt on color... first i try field green, and then Dark Green but still dont seem right...and according to supaglue
QUOTE

the original factory finish US semi gloss OD green when new.
in time as wear 'n tear developed, hence the application of the typical ATM matt drab green.
hope that answers your question.
don't forget the pdrm blue as an option for modelling the commando, though not the 90mm gun varient.

the matt drab appearance was then corrected by Major
QUOTE

I don't think so... Those days all ATM vehicles BLING BLING!!! or Semi BLING BLING... Colour not sure but mostly nearer to British Field Green

and there's go the answer for the bling bling... anyway, this is still not finished. I will reduced the glossiness after weathering and effect2 semua tu...

About the kontot apperance, i dont have a clue.... to me it look ok and tall!

hmm the antenna base, memang nampak besar but in reality pon besar gak.... tengok la kalau ade masa aku tukar coz kit parts lagi worst...

head protector semalam baru lepas glue tu....nanti aku file sikit....
thanks for ur constructive comments..really appreciate it

normal plastic or clear parts

As for the green, I understand your difficulty cos the 70s Malaysian green is not really OD but a halfway between OD and Olive Green to my eye. But I cant comment now on ur mix now until final fininshing. First coat bit susah to tell...takpe, jangan susah hati atau tension. Hisap rokok banyak2 :D

Great job so far, tapi I notice in this kit the "batang" parts memang seems overscale...like the side view mirror leg and turret basket....especially the side mirror leg, macam batang balak!

En. Shah,

thanks for ur input... yeah it's hard to get the correct term lebih2 lagi our army memang xde share paint type so all went by try and error method

my email to KAD Museum still havent been answered for almost 1.5 months now

all of the batang memang overscale...oversized.... belasah aje la... if we look at the real pics, the bakul durian is just thin rod..... memang hampeh hobby boss ni... but this is the only kit for this subject so belasah aje la

susah hati n tensen??? ada la sikit....isap rokok banyak??? kena claim ngan Alfred Dunhill for sponsorship!

For the brakes, try use maroon/hull red instead of red. Much more in scale kot.

Headlight protector kena rebuild ye. More work for my V-150 la camni.

"Silantra"
nice try, dude!
when i spotted your "matt" V150, i figured, you did a pretty good color representation of what an actual current outdoors static museum display of a real v150 actually looks like...perfectly sun bleached like some old Caribou at the Sg Besi base.
also, dunno if you guys realize this, but back in the mid-70's most of soft skin vehicles like the land rovers and volvos were painted in the matt Malaysian field drab green.
a color qute unlike the US factory applied semi-gloss OD as worn on the exterior of a typical Recce V-150 operating from that period.

Gents,
very good discourse on the color. must keep it recorded for future generations. ( I am serious, ni)

Sil, don't let the opportunity go to waste, ok? selepas ini tolong buat write up for webpage. thank you in advance :P

Silantra - July 14, 2009 04:45 PM (GMT)
Disaster strike again!!!!!! i'll be damn.... always kena like this...

ok, the story

i masked some of the small area for touch up and after it's done, i peel the masking tape and the tape pull the gloss coat....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

the gloss coat was H20 covercoat and it was cured for more than 5 days... the tape was only there for a few hours...low tack tape
..for photography purpose, i peel more of the surface area
user posted image

the gloss film is hard to be removed and i used several method from sanding and followed by masking tape..i masked the area and pull the film.... still not so succeed as the film was very stubborn..

so i soak the door (trial method) into a hot water and leave for 30 mins... and then i tried peeling the film. Still hard to come off but easier then before..
but this time, the film pull away the color beneath it.... double trouble
user posted image
this may be cool worn out effect...but not in this build

so now i dont know...maybe i will try soak the whole tank into a hot water mix with detergent and leave it overnight... so i guess more work for me...and i anticipated the whole paint job will be doom and i will have to repaint..........grrrrrrrrrrr

but if i look at the bright sight, maybe i could try another color.... so lambat la lagi siap..... tangan dah gatal je nak sambung fast boat nih

sky_tokyodrifter - July 14, 2009 04:58 PM (GMT)
abg sil,

Good to see you continuing. Actually bang if you use masking tape you have to peel it off immediately if not it will become like that. I also kena banyak kali, frust menonggeng. But the effect looks cool like you said "warn out" but again if you plan to redo nangis woo.

Take a short brake and do your boat bro, ease off the pain.

The things we modellers have to put up with right? haiya <_<
