Title: Malayan Itik

landyshah - June 10, 2009 01:29 PM (GMT)
As usual, thinking of the next build...I thought I would do a soft skin, a change from the ships and planes. Always liked the DUKW, so:

DUKW in British Army colours, Malaya. Italeri 1/35.

Think this will be OOB mostly.....since the build I plan after this (Flower class corvette) is gonna be a biggie....

Besides, the DUKW can be contributed to MGB :D

sky_tokyodrifter - June 10, 2009 04:45 PM (GMT)
wow abg shah, this itik very interestinglah . Racun kaw kaw

Bud Bilko - June 11, 2009 01:42 AM (GMT)

Sil: After pinkfire, aku dh makin suka colour scheme bukan bukan :D

azlandiver - June 16, 2009 03:03 AM (GMT)
produktif kilang ko ye shah :D

itik nila ape......itik serati kot huhuhuhu

Loo CK - June 16, 2009 05:48 AM (GMT)
shah,
apparently the suspension and wheels are a bit off. MIG production sells the correction parts but I don't think its absolutely neccessary....

landyshah - June 16, 2009 10:26 AM (GMT)
Yeah Towkay, read that somewhere...some other stuff to correct as well. Ill do what I can on my own using whatever ref on British DUKW I have (Squadron Signal DUKW book)....but aiyah, for this one, Ill go mostly OOB.

Its mostly just to take a break from the usual fodder :D

landyshah - June 24, 2009 03:25 AM (GMT)
As usual, the fatal "gatal" (why malay and english pronounce different?...faytal, gaytal or faatal, gaatal) has lead to some research...

Found THIS and THIS and THIS and THIS, Oboe 6 landing, the Australian invasion of Labuan and Sabah in 1945. The Oboe landings were the Australian/Allied operation to retake Borneo island from the Japs. Often overlooked and not well known, but some serious fighting took place. I gave up on Operation Zipper as there were no pics of DUKW in action.

Found definitive picture evidence for DUKW in Labuan (from Australian War Museum site) - pics and captions from their website:

(Balikpapan is in Indonesia, just is just for an idea of how the landings looked)

So, Ive got a Ozzie colour scheme for my Duck...which is standard US OD...with big white numbers on the side. Ive found the complete serial numbers for one vehicle, now researching details of unit markings...as refs indicate the unit concerned is 2/19th Transport Company, Royal Australian Army Service Corps...

So the DUKW did help to kick out the Japs from Labuan and Sabah, quite significant for MGB.....and better still, we cant have 3 white OOB Ducks on show...No white duckee for meee

For you guys who have Matildas and Alligators in your stash, this opens some new possibilites for MGB:

Dont think this ever came to Malaysia haha, but the parts have been washed, will start soon.....also ordered an Eduard PE set to go with it

Loo CK - July 12, 2009 04:41 AM (GMT)
Shah,
the PE set worth it? External or interior?

landyshah - July 12, 2009 06:17 AM (GMT)
Loo: There is not much difference of interior and exterior for a DUKW, its all open air :P

No engine etc in this Italeri kit. This is the Eduard set, USD 17 from Lucky - it will give all the necessary stuff for the visible fittings, but not superdetail. When it arrives will post here.

moJimbo - July 12, 2009 10:12 AM (GMT)
CMK makes the resin engine compartment set, + pe details on the interior/exterior as well, well worth the buy, but difficult to find nowadays

landyshah - July 12, 2009 11:42 AM (GMT)
Thanks Jimbo, but this will be mostly OOB with a bit of scratch add ons and PE. Save the aftermarket budget for the Flower

Ah AFV...long time no touch....forgot how quickly one can assemble them compared to ships hahaha:

Fit is good so far. The Aussie version is completely open, no canvas or side triangular windows. Also I cut apart the windscreen and position it folded down as per my ref.

Loo CK - July 12, 2009 01:47 PM (GMT)
I thinkits appropirate to label our very own Shah as Mr.Modify.....

PoohBear - July 13, 2009 12:10 AM (GMT)
Mr. Modify, will need to pick your brain when I start slicing this itik!

landyshah - July 13, 2009 04:34 AM (GMT)
Seashah la, Mr Modify la, what else is coming? :P :D

Mr Pooh : What are you hatching for your Duck until must slice it up? Interesting!! Roast duck?

Um...Shah-berry or Flower-Shah ? ^_^

My duck should be lightly roasted. Don't have any PE toppings for it. ;)

landyshah - July 15, 2009 03:55 AM (GMT)
LOL, Ill try my hand at putting a figure in this Duck...since Mr Loo brought it up :D

So, gotta make meself a Digger:

PoohBear - July 15, 2009 06:22 AM (GMT)
Great stuff. I was actually contemplating to add figgies too.

landyshah - July 15, 2009 06:28 AM (GMT)
Aiyo The mahaguru of figure is watching, also the mahagurus of AFV....

Dont scold arrrr....i try only arrrrr :ph43r:

landyshah - July 15, 2009 12:01 PM (GMT)
Some update on my research so far:

1. Aussie DUKW are pretty much the same as US ones, olive drab overall.
2. Mostly open top, no canvas hoop except one behind drivers cab - but some are completely "flat"
3. Some Ducks seem to have the tire pressure mechanism, some not - so Im not going to install it. Looks ugly
4. Wheel covers can be fitted or left off - ill leave them off :D
5. WWII ducks did not have the vents on the body sides - so I have filled them in:
user posted image

Progress is rather slow, waiting for the PE set to arrive and I dont dare build too much. From what I know, the PE covers some cabin bits and the clasps/clamps/handles/guards for the exterior

While waiting, think ill build the figure :P . For some reason, I am also thinking of a diorama base for this!!!

Silantra - July 15, 2009 12:56 PM (GMT)
Modiseashah,
Finally after being provoked u have to give it all. This is a must see and history in the making.
I must follow this thread closely. Caya le bro.

landyshah - July 15, 2009 03:34 PM (GMT)
Modiseashah pulakkkk...haiz

En Zaidi, ya la kena provoke by all you AFV tawkays.....my turn pulak kena racun yer...what goes around comes around haha. Me doing figures and diorama?? Holy coww

Nampak gaya high risk of this build jadi hari ini dalam sejarah : Kejadian bencana model besar besaran

moJimbo - July 15, 2009 03:46 PM (GMT)
anything planned for the cargo bay?

landyshah - July 16, 2009 03:39 AM (GMT)
Jimbo, well I could do this but I think I would die in the process. So lets just keep it one figure haha:
user posted image

So realistically, maybe some jerry cans, crates, drums etc. Could cheat by covering the whole thing with canvas :P

(notice- no side vents on that vehicle)

msyamal - July 16, 2009 04:15 AM (GMT)
Bro Shah, maybe can share some tutorial mcm mana buat custom canvas... :D

landyshah - July 16, 2009 02:08 PM (GMT)
I made up two figures from whatever pieces I could find in my spares box, plus some amputation surgery....one guy sitting on the side of the hull and another relaxing stretched out on the front. The idea is a ciggie break (what else!) on the beach while waiting for orders...trying to give it a "relaxed Aussie" look...

Will need to putty and blend in all the new body parts, and make the bush hats
