Title: Pastel For Weathering
farizforce - June 10, 2009 08:29 AM (GMT)
Hi,
Just a small question i would like to ask from your experience, I heard that modelers use pastel for weathering purpose. What sort of pastels do you guys use and what kind of brand is good? I'm referring to the more economical pastels sold in the art shops instead of actually pastels made for hobby or maybe you guys have any 2 cents worth sharing on this. Thanks. :)

You can use the economical pastels found in art shops. I personally use a made-in-korea set. Just make sure you get the soft pastels, not oil pastels.
To use, you grind the pastels on a piece of fine sandpaper. Using a brush, pick up the powder and brush it onto your model. You can subtly blend different colours to create effects. You can also mix it with thinner to simulate mud.

That's what i thought. I almost buy an oil pastels. Whats the different between soft and oil? If i use oil pastels would it be any negative effect?

just don't try oil pastel on your painted model...oil pastel is LIKE a hardened grease with pigment... soft/chalk pastel is a CHALK, with more pigment... words cannot describe the result of oil pastel... I've not try it on my models... but i have many oil pastel stains on my table... and it does not look anywhere like a wear effect...

Orz I was planning using Buncho Oil pastel for weathering, but it's the wrong pastel.
Where can I get/buy the soft/chalk pastel beside art shop in KL? >.<

I did see one brand from Korea but I forgot the brand is, but it's mark "Oil pastel". Maybe I will go again next time, if not I will try Multifilla on Saturday but if i can't make it, will go to Venus Art on Sunday probably.

Thanks for the picture. Just to elaborate further, the pastel effect can be mainly used to simulate mud too? From the sifus, any recommendation on what colour is for what? e.g dark earth is for dry mud..etc.. :)

Fixative is helps to fix the powder on the surface. You can also fix and blend pigments with turpentine (Artist Grade Spirit).
