Title: Military Air Base
Description: Looking for this kind of diorama
striderozy - June 5, 2009 10:06 PM (GMT)
Hi all,
I am planning to do a small diorama on military air base.
Can anyone provide the pictures or tutorial links to it?
Thanks.

strider,
best to let the guys know what period you are interested in. WW2 , modern, WW1, etc... and what specifics.
If you do not want a lot of research, you can always just buy the ready make Airfix kits with the diorama. There is also the Revell Eurofighter kit with airbase available locally.

I want a modern one.....
Do you have the picture on the ready kits that you mentioned?
And also the price range???? :)
Thanks.

Here...But is better to have sufficient research on which type that meet your preference.
Also... we can't provide help when we don't know what you have in mind... I think you can start posting your Work-In-Progress in
this section ... and perhaps the guys here can help you along the way...
good luck

Actually I dont have a full plan yet.
And actually I want this diorama for my SD Gundam 00.
Is like Gundam 00 attacking the military base.
But I dont have detail in my mind now for the overall plan yet.
Thus, looking for references..... ^_^
The link provided for the military base is nice.
Where can I get it here in Malaysia?
beachbum - June 8, 2009 12:41 AM (GMT)
Not sure what you meant by "where can I get it in Malaysia" but you may want to consider the size of your dio. Unless you have several Gundams you wish to put into the dio it is very likely your dio will only feature a small part of an airbase.
Scale aside unless you are doing a H0/00 scale or 1/72nd. building most of an airbase will make your Gundam look very, very small as airbases by nature are huge (runaway, hangars, etc).
My suggestion would be to pick either a hangar or part of a hangar, with a plane of two parked outside on the tarmac or a control tower with some vehicles and one or two small planes. By doing that you just have to research on either a hangar or tower rather than searching for the setup of a entire airport. Often in dios we need only to suggest to the viewer where the scene is taking place. For example if we want to do a forest scene, we need not fill up the whole dio with trees but maybe some trees and some clearing should do.
Nothing wrong with putting in a lot of details but do remember you don't want the viewer to spend too much time focused on your groundwork but more time on the star of your dio, your gundam and the story.

Thanks for your suggestion.
Ya, you are right, if using 1/72, sure will make my SD gundam looks small.
I plan to use something like 1/100 or 1/144.
But as mentioned by beachburn, I dont want to build the whole base.
I just want to have a guardpost, gate, may be anti-aircraft or pillbox.
Any picture? ^_^
Just need some suggestions, not sure if I have skill to make those.....

Anyone know how to make rough surface like the road surface?
Thanks.
sky_tokyodrifter - July 7, 2009 04:02 PM (GMT)
For asphalt, try using sandpaper with a rough grid and spray colour on top of it ;)
beachbum - July 8, 2009 01:26 AM (GMT)
Alternatively just get sandpaper that is black. For your scale #1000 grit paper should be ok or even #800 but any lower grit # the grains will be too coarse.
As for pics of airbases, there was a post with many pictures on a group build of an airport by our forumers here about 2 years ago. It had tons of planes and several buildings and was huuuuge coz it was 1/72nd scale. I remember doing the Admin building. The coordinator is our current SFTPMS society President, David (callsign Poopeh). Can't remember which forum section the pics were posted but you can always send him a PM for pics.
Here are few sites but the pics are limited. Alternatively ry typing in Military Airbase Photos or Images in Google or Yahoo.

Thanks for the reply....
Thats very helpful.
I plan is to have a small guard post at the front, a watch tower may be, pagar surrounding the compound, then may be one more gun turret or anti-aircraft missile set....

Anyone know what material to be used for the net?
I am referring to the net type of thing that military used to cover up the operation control centre, normally seen in the desert area.....
I tried to find a photo of it, can't find it....
Anyone has any idea what material to be used?
And also can help to provide photo if you guys have it?
Thanks.
Some sort like this kind of net:

Will come back to this thread once has any question.
Thanks man.

:D
Penang is also good..
i think maybe can use tea leaves to simulate the "daun" look on from the picture you show...
maybe some other sifu can chip in and add a lil more detail to this method..

Yup, as Kuman mentioned you can use bandage gauze to give you a close approximation of the camo netting. You can use a double layer for a smaller holes. Paint the netting and allow the paint to dry completely. Then spray some diluted PVA or white glue and sprinkle some dried tea leaves for added camo effect.
