Now I see your need for fine red sable brushes which is the same as kolinsky sable. It is called differently in different countries but from the same animal. Just for you and your fine work will soon have the 10/0 and 5/0 short hair brushes.
For such detail painting would an air brush 0.1mm help?
Should you need to retard the drying of acrylics use a retarder.
Love to see more of your works.

AHA Patrick,
Now I see U started to get "DIRTY", huh?!!
Look at all those dirt on the boots... Phew!! it doesn't goes with your reputation, Hehehe...
Anyway, it's a great figure painted by a great master. Love the subject (victoria colonial period) too... the red sleeve (tunic) keep reminds me of the movie "Zulu Dawn".

Not your usual cup of tea so I assume this is for a client. Nevertheless, I'm sure its a refreshing change for you from German grey. .
I see a very distinctive and deliberate shading of the lower half of the leather coat and the part just above the waist. Nice, very nice. The flash or the lighting seems to have muted the highs and lows on his turban and facial features. If I were to hazard a guess I would say you had sandpaper polished the sabre rather than paint it.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Leong
I've heard of Kolinsky and my regular retailer ( with whom I'm a resident painter ) carries them. Of course it would be more convenient to get them from you. What's your price and what's 10/0 and 5/0? Any pics to show? I've been using only 00, 0 and 1. Other than Kolinsky do you have other brands with the short brsitles which might be cheaper yet 'from the same animal'? Btw the last three I got from you were 'stripers'. Can use. I did a check and found that what I'm looking for is termed as 'round'.
Thanks for the offer but I don't use an airbrush for detailing small scale figures. I use an Aztek and the Fine nozzle works fine for me. Same with retarders. I don't use them but would be interested in your Americanna paints. These should dry flat and would be an optional substitute for the Ceramcoat and Folkart I am currently using.

I've always been dirty ;) B) Seriously though, the box art calls for it and more so since it's a stand alone display figure I should mess up the boots. If it's for a dio then I'll let the client to the 'dirty work' to match his dio's groundwork color.
Oh yes, Zulu Dawn was great. 1978? It's actually a prequel to Zulu released in 1964 ( Michael Caine debut ). Zulu recounts the events which took place just after the Battle of Isandhlwana. I have both in VCD format.

Yes for a client as with almost all I paint :( Oh there have been subjects other than Germans - females, civilians and the likes of Lawrence ( period stuff ).
The turban is supposed to be black and I can't highlight much more. Also I reduced the exposure and that could explain the 'muted' flesh tones you see. Perhaps I should also go easy on the flat coating. I was told flats are not necessary for acrylic finishes. I'll see what and where I can improve next time.
Good guess with the blade. You must've recalled the one I did with the medieval knight. Just brush on Future and it won't tarnish if at all this can happen to white metal or lead.
As for the shading, thanks for your earlier advice. I've been doing it since.
Brickbats help you improve, praises don't

Pat,
I think the shading is well done but somehow I prefer your oils mix because of that little bit of sheen in some of the tones. This is just too flat for me. Lacks a bit of life.
Btw, the postal moolah you sent to SFTPMS has arrived. I will pass them to the EXCO the next time we meet. Great to have you as an Associate member!

Hi Patrick,
Yes, they are called script liners as the long fine sable hairs do load a good amount of colors for painting long lines. The folk artist favourite in outlining. As yet to meet more fine miniature painters we do not have the short handle round in 5/000 and 10/000 but will be arranging for you and pictures as soon as possible.
The Americana acrylics dries matt and takes on Matt H20 varnish diluted with water 1:1 for a low sheen.
More new colors in shipment.

Correct, Watch thye movie "Zulu" on TV couple of years back... Michael Caine still have lots of hair and looks sooooo young :D
Off-topic: Between the 2 movie "Zulu" and "Zulu Dawn", even though "Zulu" with it's traditional "good guys always win" ending... BUT I like "Zulu Dawn" more since it's the famous Isandhlwana Massacre incident.... to tell the truth I always like movie with "Last stand" theme.... typically those with contemporary modern equiped army beaten by poorly equiped common people... (eg. Custer's last stand, Beau Geste of the French Legioniare, Lion of the Desert, ....)
Back to your regular program...
