Title: Su-27 Flanker B 1:48 Mini Hobby Models
Description: 22 years noob comeback.

Arzwarth - May 28, 2009 08:39 AM (GMT)
Hi, it's been 22 years after last I build an airplane. Started to build Gundam model last year after been introduced by my elder brother who like to collect them. But my interest is more to customize and model such as tank and airplane. My wife encourage me to do this hobby to stop me play MMROPG lol. In February 09 I bought compressor, spray gun colors and tool.

WIP of this plane was originally posted in http://z3.invisionfree.com/Zero_G/index.ph...topic=5679&st=0 but I decide to post here too.

This model was bought from Miniature Hobby with 40% discount with a price of RM30ish.
Accuracy is so-so, resin are terrible, with so many in-perfect mold. Size are of the plane is quite big, 43cm long 31cm width.

I have a reference to make this plane from Narita Family website.

This model cockpit are super lame. With the influence of Mcgyver, I decide to do lamest thing that, I print the control panel and stick it in cockpit. I use 120g A4 paper printed with Laser printer.
user posted image

I add a few details on the chair using the 120g card paper. Add steel wire/ Dawai and a tiny pla-plate.
user posted image
In this picture, they ready to be spray with Mr. Surfacer 1.2k

This is the Result of a super noob lazy cockpit. I even spill green paint on the right control panel and lazy to redo it because when I attach to to the plane, the view is acceptable. Colors of the of control panel I use Gundam Marker.

Not bad (I think). At this time, I only have 2/0 brush bought from a stationary shop near my house so not that fine. Hand brush using Mr. Color Black and Silver. I only have lacquer type at the moment.
user posted image
I Spray the back of the pilot seat with Mr. Color Light Blue No. 20. Because my wife like this color >.< end of discussions .. lol

Removing top center line on the canopy. I wasy very proud of this because first time doing this and result a very satisfying after hurting my finger and feel so numb.

user posted image

Sanding start using Sand paper industrial 400 > 600 > 1000

user posted image

Then I use Tamiya 1200 > 2000
After that I use Tamiya compound finishing and buff it till shiny.
And Last I wash canopy with plain water at the sink.

Yes you can see the crack there >.<

Arzwarth - May 28, 2009 08:58 AM (GMT)
This is how it look like when connected the upper and lower body.
user posted image
After glue the body together, a hard filing job and a little bit of tamiya putty and sand it off secukup rasa.
user posted image

You can see the connetion of this part of air intake to the engine is sooo off.
Eh? why no Curve there?
user posted image
I made a new Curve both side.

Arzwarth - May 28, 2009 09:22 AM (GMT)
Here is the part I have done a bit of hard work to make a satisfactory connection of the engine and the air intake.
user posted image

Adding putty and sand it up. The black checker air filter was added before gluing the air intake to the body.
user posted image

I glue the canopy and put putty and sand it after masking. This one mistake I have made. I follow a fade line on front of the canopy and I thought that was the border between canopy and the metal part. This mistake will make my model look different from RL plane. And the little nose on the canopy I put a bit higher because the canopy didn't fall when i set it in.

Glue together some parts... the cone I add putty and sand. 2nd mistake, I trim lots of part that make the plane too slim at the middle. When I put the slat, it was too thick, and I have to file and sand the slat again and again to match the the thickness fuselage.

Arzwarth - May 28, 2009 09:48 AM (GMT)
Making my own stand. Bandai stand so expensive.. mine only RM3.90.

Progress, I glue the missile/bomb holder to plane (what is this call anyway?). I drill hole under the plane for DIY stand.
user posted image

Put a plastic anchor and luckily I got the same size of my stand rod.
user posted image

Orz.. too tall, this in a non pilot model >.<
user posted image

So I cut it half with a file.
user posted image

Look better now.
user posted image

Sprayed the Mr. surfacer 1.2k and spray the black shadow line with mr. color black after 24h.
user posted image

Arzwarth - May 28, 2009 09:55 AM (GMT)
I glue - primer (mr. surfacer 1.2k) - spray mr. color white to the missile.
user posted image

Then I spray the plane with Mr. Color No. 20 Light Blue. I use 0.5 spray gun and I think I over spray on the top of the plane.
user posted image

Next step the colors of camouflage and the cone.
user posted image

I mask the plane with tacky and news paper to spray the camouflage. I try not to make sharp border.
user posted image

Light gull gray done.
user posted image

See I use tacky for next color of camouflage.

I didn't know MacGyver influence you to do aircraft kit too :P

Nice progress there :D

Arzwarth - May 28, 2009 10:17 AM (GMT)
Masking is ready for next step of spray. Mr. Color 323 Light Blue.

>> I don't have any pictures to show from this process till below, wife borrow the camera. <<

Camouflage is done, I decide to mask and color the engine first before washing.

My lines colors that I will use for the engine. Actually I will use only the Alcad II Duraluminum, Magnesium and Jet Exhaust, Mr. MetalColor Stainless and and Aluminum. Oh well actually I'm showing off my expensive colors :P

Arzwarth - May 28, 2009 10:43 AM (GMT)
Klay, Mcgyver also teach me how to make DIY spray booth.

user posted image

To use Alcad II I read the instruction carefully on the label I see a warning "This product contains a chemical known to State of California to cause cancer or birthdefects or other or other reproduction harm". Look like same effect when you smoke. Luckily I stop smoking 3 years ago. Mr. Color brand, do they have warning like this on the label? I can't read Japanese.

Tada ... to prevent harm to my health. RM10.00 at hardware store.. hoping to find 3M brand one day.

I'm sorry there is no picture of progress when spraying the engine and washing. The engine part I try to copy WIP from Narita Family website. But I think my combination of color maybe wrong. or maybe they hide some info so ppl can't copy. But high possibility that I'm too noob lol.

Add 28/5/09: I think it's a good Idea not to install the vertical wing/rudder before paint the engine part. Because the side that facing to the vertical wing so hard to spray.

Top: I don't know why the engine in this picture didn't shine at all.

Bottom
user posted image

Side: I mix 1:1 blue and black enamel and 1:10 paint to thinner for washing and a lot of cotton bud ... and tissue when i getting lazy.
user posted image

Some panel line I have to draw myself because the line became too shallow. This is because I scrubbed it too much with sand paper to make the parts fit together.

3rd Mistake!!, I forgot to sand the paint with 2000 gred sand paper. Some part is hard to be wash nicely and leaving ugly gray color. I don't know what happen but there is crack at the tip left wing (bottom). Crack occurred to the air intake, the glue fail because of playing the plane too much. Ahaks.

Arzwarth - May 28, 2009 11:18 AM (GMT)
I color the tyre with tamiya flat black. The rim color with Mr. Color IJA Green no. 16 and add chip effect, I don't have aluminum color. I use chrome silver instead hoping the shine will gone when apply flat topcoat.
user posted image

Here all the three gears after washing.
user posted image

Gears attached to airplane, with the cover too.

I've done a few touch here and there.

Arzwarth - May 28, 2009 02:02 PM (GMT)
No la this is not 1 day project.. original WIP I stated in my first post, and I just do all the WIP in this post in one day. The last post was suppose to be this morning. Now I'm doing the decal.

The base actually a resit holder, you can see sometimes in cashier they stab the resit to that base like with sharp rod, you can buy that at any stationary shop.

looking good bro.....one suggestion only

i think better to use casing rather than a display stand......cos the wheels are down

just my 2 kupang ;)

sky_tokyodrifter - May 29, 2009 08:36 AM (GMT)
abg lan, based on the picture, it looks as if the plane is just about to land on the airway strip but since there will be no pilot inside i think brother lan has a point there but this position also cun huhu. just my 2 yen

kwongyan - May 29, 2009 12:22 PM (GMT)
nice work there

guys, sometimes when run out of display space, i have to put a stand, whether got pilot or wheels down B)

Arzwarth - May 29, 2009 01:30 PM (GMT)
Casing is good idea, dunno how to get one, but I save it for model kit that really expensive and very nicely done

sky_tokyodrifter - May 29, 2009 03:20 PM (GMT)
