Sharing My 1st Resin Kit Experience

Spent 4 full weeks sanding, sawing, boiling in hot water, scribbing. Spent 4 days ab, hand paint, decaling, panel lining, coating, assembly.

I bought this kit from G-System shop in Soy street, HK, so i m pretty sure i m not buying a pirated version. However, mebbe the mold is already old, the kit does looks like a pirated one!

I also bought 2 other kits from G-System which i dont find the same problem, so i guess i m not a crying baby being over sensitive on small issues.

Complaints

1. Warping problem - tons of them. Smaller parts which i can still boil it in hot water n manually bend them my self. but even the biggest part of kit warp like a banana which i can only minimize the curves.

2. square holes that r not square, triangle holes that r not triangle. The holes r the one that took most of my time. In the end, i have got to dig a bigger hole n put pla plates on the edge to make the edge straight again.

3. Panel lines that's not straight, and disjointed. Some panel lines r filled with so much excess resin that they r disjointed. Some r too shallow, but since the lines r pretty big, which i cannot use a needle n scrib, i have gotta use knife to slowly "cut" the panel line out. Some parts the panel lines r totally twisted i have to cut the parts into two, sand, putty, and join them back together.

4. Surface cleaning. The oil on the surface is like a layer of wax. Process of cleaning: soak overnight with detergent, soak 15~30 minutes in industrial thinner, soak again in detergent, overall sanding, soak again in detergent. everytime i have to use toothbrush to brush. special thanks to Kirin for the tips for cleaning

5. Fitting problem. Some due to warping; eg the head armor, which is by joining 2 parts together. the gap is as big as 0.8mm and more (I fill the gap with pla plate before i use expoxy putty). Fitting problem in small parts: the front antena, the 2 small ones. it's almost impossible to detect the fitting problem during test fit unless u r using glue to glue it.

Lessons learned

1. Really learned how to inspect a resin kit. It's totally different from inspectingan injection kit.

2. Learned that resin primer is much stronger than normal plastic primer. very good in covering small holes.

3. Aclad. This is introduced to me by Klay. Really love the effects of chrome silver! i m very happy about it.

4. Dont under estimate black in white paint. I wanna do a very light tone of gray instead of white, so i added a little black into the white. When i was mixing the paint, the gray looked much whiter than i wanted. but when i spray on the kit, and the paint dried, it turns out much darker! learn to estimate gray even better now!

Conclusion

This is definitely not my cleanest kit. After all the pre paint sanding n covering holes, i still missed a few parts.

This kit also tested my patience to a new level. imagine 4 weeks of full time sanding! It's almost to a point, like what i told Kirin, "You think i care?"

This is not my proudest kit, and i was like cursing numerous time when i was sanding. However, yesterday when i finally finished assembled the kit, i almost can here G-System boss was laughing, "Come...... i ll make u my bitch!"

It just looks so attractive!
^_^

C&C welcome!

With all the problem you can still produced such nice build, you are very "geng".

Thanks for detailing all the problem you face with this kit. Will be very helpful if I were to purchase any resin kit in the future.

In my opinion, This model is not everyone can do the job, you have started doing it and you are someway in that level already.
This model requires Patience, you have done it for weeks. Colour is evenly on the surface, nice and neat. It may not be the cleanest kit, but overall still looks very nice.
Everytime we try out new things, it is a new discovery and it will never be ending learning.

For me...I have a loooongggg way to go

anyway, Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Infact, you have done a great job! ^_^ ^_^ Keep it up brother :D

Thanks bro. We all learn from the process of building n share so we also learn from each others' experiences.

Not long way to go, just build. The best part of this hobby is everytime we complete a kit we realise we r a little bit better than before ^_^

Gambate!
