Title: S-100 Class Schnellboot With Flakvierling
Description: Revell 1/72 kit

Silantra - May 23, 2009 07:31 PM (GMT)
Project has started...
This will be an OOB build...

A bit of history
The Schnellboot or S-boot ("fast craft") was a type of German torpedo boat that saw service during World War II. The Schnellboot was called an E-boat by the Allies; it is commonly held that the "E" stood for "Enemy", but it is likely that it in fact stood for "Eilboot" "fast boat".

Development

After the Treaty of Versailles, most of Germany's military production was severely curtailed. Small patrol craft were not. The S-boote trace their lineage back to a private motor yacht — a 22-ton-displacement, 34-knot craft called Oheka II, which had been built in 1927 for a wealthy financier and patron of the arts, Otto Kahn, by the German shipbuilding company Lürssen.

This design was chosen because the theater of operations of such boats was expected to be the North Sea, English Channel and the Western Approaches. The requirement for good performance in rough seas dictated the use of a round-bottomed displacement hull rather than the flat-bottomed planing hull that was more usual for small, high-speed boats. Lürssen overcame many of the disadvantages of such a hull and, with the Oheka II, produced a craft that was fast, strong and seaworthy. This attracted the interest of the German Navy, which in 1929 ordered a similar boat but fitted with two torpedo tubes. This became the S-1, and was the basis for all subsequent S-boote.

Operations with the Kriegsmarine

S-boote were often used to patrol the Baltic Sea and the English Channel in order to intercept shipping heading for the English ports in the south and east. As such, they were up against Royal Navy and Commonwealth (particularly Royal Canadian Navy contingents leading up to D-Day) of Motor Gun Boats (MGBs), Motor Torpedo Boats (MTBs), Motor Launches, frigates and destroyers. They were also transferred in small number to the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea by river and land transport. Some small S-Boote were built as longboats for auxiliary cruisers.

the Kit
IT's revell kit...
user posted image

from initial inspection, this kit will promise a smooth sailing building it.
I test fitting majot components such as the hull and the main deck and the kalotte..all parts seem to fit perfectly...
the only difficulty is to understand the instructions,... in the early steps, you have to choose some options depending on which version of S-100 boat you will finish... some options required to open holes at different places...so this may take a while to understand at first.......

next i assemble the display stand,....not much a problem except for a seam line that easily removed with sanding........

and i temporarily attached the hull, deck and the kallote....

at first this is for my first ship gb but i think i wont finished it on time, so i decided to join the LSGB whichever come first..

thanks for looking

Bomber Vince - May 24, 2009 01:34 AM (GMT)
nice one zaidi, another huge ship from you again.

moJimbo - May 24, 2009 02:49 AM (GMT)
so the difference between this and the previous revell version is just the quad flak?

landyshah - May 24, 2009 04:05 AM (GMT)
Jimbo, as far as I know, the difference is just the Quad flak, rest is the same...

Sil: Nice subject! Jap lagi aku start Perkasa, join you sailing haha

Silantra - May 24, 2009 04:27 AM (GMT)
Jimbo,

yup concurred with Shah.... anyway, some minor details also differ if u plan to put the Quad gun......

Shah,

lets go sailing..................for sure u will potong me nanti...

landyshah - May 24, 2009 04:31 AM (GMT)
Sailing, i am sailinggggg

Jap aku tengah pulun like hell to clear off the Spit...

Perkasa vs S-100 hehehe....top speed almost the same....

azlandiver - May 24, 2009 09:39 AM (GMT)
fuiiyyyohhhh.....ship pulak

lepas ni ape banggg??

sighhh......when will i start mine

Silantra - May 29, 2009 02:24 AM (GMT)
due to not hijacking Tuan registered Majors' thread.............

ok Shah, first, i feel awkward and weird when u called me Zaidi for the first time...akakakaka

regarding the S-100 boat, well others that the props and the guns, there are so many errors need to be fixed....

i only try to fix those that can be classified as WAJIB ...
1. the bow MG tub need to be enlarged and flatten. The diameter of the revell kit is about 1.4mm and the required diameter is 1.85mm. This is wajib to be fixed as the MG will be easily rotate with the crew..
2. the torpedo tube doors are wrongly place and are too long. I have to cut each tube a few mm and fix them back so that it will be shorten and the door hinges are position near the wheelhouse...this is wajib ma
3. the prop.... huhuhuh.... wajib or sunat havent sure..

not so wajib/sunat
1. the bow gun have a series of i dont know what this is called...look like ammo storage... user posted image
maybe i will try replicate with anything....

2. the torpedo racks should have a round bottom shape instead of flat ..

3. the railings are oversize... pakai wire la kot

4. the details inside the wheelhouse is basic...maybe i will add doors to both side...

so there are so many things that i already identified... more will be found later trust me.... the kit is so poisonous that i almost order WEM set but have to skip due to insufficient fund and to keep the cost as low as posibble...the WEM set alone cost more that the kit itself....

will be back guys... right now i have International Dragon Boat Festival due next week and all energy are gone when i get back home... good time pon tak dapat!!! hahahaha

so Shah and Major, sabaq noooooooooooooo

Silantra - May 31, 2009 12:11 PM (GMT)
another small update...while waiting for the paint to dry on the BTR-70, i decided yo do the front deck first.

References told me that the bow gun tub should be enlarged and the surface around the tub should also be flatten. Revell must got a wrong references i believed...

This is the top surface of the deck.
user posted image
Visible in this image is the bump surrounding the tub which will be flatten later.

The bottom/inside surface has a large thick 'ring'.
user posted image

Work started by removing the large ring using a miniature saw and cutter.
user posted image

and then i attached the circle template and secured with tape.
user posted image
I drew a new circle which is 4mm bigger than the original diameter and then using a scribing tools, i make a few light pass along the perimeter of the new circle. After a few pass, i put more pressure until it detached.

Using dremel then, i flatten the surface around the tub. Prior to that i masked the surrounding details...
slowly i then sand with multiple grade sand paper...
this is how it look...still raw..will need to smooth the surface tonight..

thanks for looking

PoohBear - June 2, 2009 06:31 AM (GMT)
Good effort so far, Sil.

What gun type is it on the bow? The ammo clips looks kinda similar to the ones in DML's 38t aufsklarungpanzer kit.

Silantra - June 2, 2009 07:37 AM (GMT)
Mr PoohBear aka Jason (or the other way round  )

the bow gun name was 2cm Rheinmetall MG C/38. It's standard AA gun install on most schnellboot beginning with the S-38 Class onwards (S-38b, S-100, S-151 and S-700 Classes boat)...
usually 20 ammo clips are attached at the side..

Pooh, if u have extra clips, let me know..willing to pay some $$ for it

Thanks for your comments

PoohBear - June 2, 2009 07:53 AM (GMT)
Yes, I have some spare clips. I think its 2cm for the mg38 but don't hold me on that as I'm no weapons expert ^_^

You can have the clips if its suitable for you.

klay - June 2, 2009 08:01 AM (GMT)
Tuan Sil, kemas betul kerja Tuan ^_^

Ya tak ya jugak, kadang2 with too many references will just make you feel that your project is majorly flawed..

Tak tau lagi bagus

ahah pooh, maybe u can be my savior as i've been do a lot of thinking in my brain on how to replicate these ammo clip... need 20 of them..
if u have some of them and didnt want them anymore, then i must thank you for that

meanwhile, i would appreciate if u could snap a closeup photo of the ammo clip...i' not an expert too but i think they can fit each other.... errr ur DML's kit is 1/72 kan??

PoohBear - June 2, 2009 08:07 AM (GMT)
1/35.

Don't know if you can spot the clip here.

If you need better photos, I will put them up later this evening.

Sorry for the anti-climax.. :P

Silantra - June 2, 2009 08:33 AM (GMT)
Pooh,

nevermind, like i said my brain i working non stop now on that ammo thingy

Klay, thanks mate....yeah..tak tau lagi bagus but once i knew, it's like point of no return to some of us especially me...

PoohBear - June 2, 2009 08:45 AM (GMT)
Maybe you could try making one out of a bondite sandwich.

Cut some sheet styrene to shape for the flat sides and sandwhich some bondite in between. The lines maybe you could replicate with thin stretched sprue or something similar. Use as master and cast about 200x ammo clips. And you can sell to others who have this kit too. :D

maybe if \we had S-boat campaign... FYI LM is having their 6th anniversary sale...hahaha

Silantra - June 2, 2009 04:48 PM (GMT)
another update of the day..

working on the tub interior..due to the new tub diameter, the interior must be enlarge too...

this is the original kit tub...
user posted image

i look into my tools box and found this 1" PVC pipe connector... so i cut it using dremel and sand the edges smooth..

user posted image
the outside diameter is not really round compare to the inside..

using 1mm sheet, i made a circular shape for the tub floor and using 0.75mm strip, i replicate the wooden lining of the floor.
user posted image

walla...finished tub..took 45mins to this stage

Silantra - August 2, 2009 05:12 AM (GMT)
it's been a while i update this build..so while waiting for the V-150 oil washes to dry, i continue with the boat.

Okay since a few months ago, suddenly the kit has breed.. huhuhuh

user posted image
3 PE set from griffon are for 1. Bridge details set, 2. weapon enchancement set and 3. Mine/depth charges rack and torpedo cradles
and one CMK resin mines set. This set contains 4 Mines and their equipment set.
This addition marked the cost of this build and this maybe the most expensive aftermarket parts i ever got for a single kit. Thanks to all the reference.. OOB konon!

Most of the Sboot were used to patrol in shallow water and along the coast so it's unlikely for them to carry depth charges, and most of them are configured with mines laying mission. Unfortunately revell didnt include the mines (so with the Italeri 1/35 boot!), so the only available mines is from CMK.... been looking for it for months and was lucky to get a good deal at greatmodels...

okay, now on with the build..

I work on the hull. References showed that the portholes on the starboard and portside are wrongly places. It should be lowered just below the waterline.
So i removed them and drill new holes. I even drill all of the holes to get the depth effect.
In this photo below, the top 'portholes' are wrongly place and i drill a new one below it.
user posted image

I inserted brass tubing in all of them to get the depth feel.
user posted image

4 more holes were drilled at the front of both side (2 on each side) and brass tube were installed.
user posted image

The engine exhaust of each S-100 class boat were a bigger holes located below the waterline and once again i dremel (not Naza) the exhaust hole.
user posted image

Plastic tubing of 5.5mm were inserted then to get the depth feel effect. They are 3 of them.
user posted image

top view of what they look like
user posted image

All of them are temporarily installed and will fix them later. Of course, the surrounding area of the exhaust will get putty treatment.

That's for now....

landyshah - August 2, 2009 07:36 AM (GMT)
Wah looks like this one is all out.....museum standard shirinking ray build...steady lahhh

Dont forget the BERAT nanti bila start painting

shah, no la ..not anything near museum quality..belasah aje

maybe kena letak batu 7-8 ketol baru berat kot..huhuh

anyway, i sand the surrounding hump of the exhaust and then polish.
user posted image

and then i mate the hull...carefully to get good alignment..

more progress soon..........

Brader, nak berat letak batu ladung lah... hahahahaha...

By the way, I hope you are not using the evergreen tube for the exhaust... looks too thick to me.

Silantra - August 3, 2009 01:37 AM (GMT)
Druid,

batu bata lagi berat dari ladung..

anyway, yes i'm using the evergreen tube for the exhaust.... after completed, the tube wall will not be visible so the thickness wont be noticed...

tunggu dan lihat aje..haha

thanks for your feedback

azlandiver - August 3, 2009 04:17 AM (GMT)
nak batu ladung ke? i got plenty of it

bro.....kata la kan kalau pakai straw utk ejos tu.......nampak keding sangat ke?

i continue with the twin gun and it's finished...(still need to add the ammo clip)

user posted image
user posted image
user posted image
user posted image

the join and PE were all very super fragile.... it's hard to hold the gun after completed.
in order not to break anything, i store the gun into the plastic container
user posted image

and then i continue with the quad gun...
the ammo clip tray
the most challenging task...
user posted image
and they are 3 of them

and seats are also tough to glue due to small contact surface
just left the ammo clip and the front armour sheild
user posted image

that's all for now..more PE next

and in this modeling business, i'm still not qualified and competent to be called PE Sil until i build a PE bicycle(s) which a few in the world could do it and we proud to have one here in Malaysia.... :D :D
