Title: Bread, Butter... And Shturmoviks

moJimbo - May 17, 2009 08:36 AM (GMT)
early in the war, production of IL-2 was not fast neough to stalin's liking, so he actually sent a telegram to the generals responsible:

You have let down our country and our Red Army. You have the nerve not to manufacture IL-2s until now. Our Red Army now needs IL-2 aircraft like the air it breathes, like the bread it eats. Shenkman produces one IL-2 a day and Tretyakov builds one or two MiG-3s daily. It is a mockery of our country and the Red Army. I ask you not to try the government's patience, and demand that you manufacture more ILs. This is my final warning. - Stalin - (from wikipedia)

...i like the last sentence :P

this is the italeri/ex-AM 1/48 ilyushin-2 shturmovik. fit is generally good except at the u/c fairings at the wing edges, and the top engine cowling... just a little putty is needed.

1. cockpit is assembled and painted, nothing fancy: flat black overall + rlm02 overspray and dark grey wash. seatbelt is decal from kit

2. the fuselage is joined first (i like it this way) and the cockpit+lower wing added from underneath
user posted image

3. after that, the build can progress quickly. wings and engine cowling are assembled to the fuselage

4. canopy are masked, and plane given a coat of surfacer

will update progress later on

Jimbo answered Stalin's call for more IL-2 after a few decades  !

Unique way of assembling the cockpit. It's easier since you can assemble the fuselage without having to wait for the cockpit to complete. How's the fitting?

the plastic quality, fitting and cockpit details is much better than the average italeri... maybe 'cos it's an ex-AM kit... it's really good...

here's a review from hyperscale

another update... only able to work on weekends; weekdays balik kerja: penat+malas :P .... on the final stretch now, hopefully can finish in 1 or 2 days' time.

6. decals applied

7. part of rear canopy removed to install the self-defence MG
user posted image

8. close-up of cockpit.
user posted image
... in the real plane, the rear gunner has only a 'hammock' seat, this is because most of the gunners are induced from the Penal Battalions (deserters, prison inmates) so seat comfort is unnecessary ;)

9. another front view
user posted image
..what are the 3 curved lines in front of the canopy for? anyone know aaa?

10. bottom view... bombs (500lb?) and rockets attached
user posted image

what left to do is to pin-wash the panel lines, spray final satin/flat coat and (this will be the best part :P ) removing the canopy masks... woohoo!

landyshah - May 30, 2009 04:05 PM (GMT)
