Title: Project 903 Academy 1:72 Mig-21 Fishbed.
TigerShark - May 11, 2009 05:02 PM (GMT)
Hello,
Project 903 started, just some pictures post and C&C are welcomed.
There is no mention of which version of the fishbed.

There are very few parts in this kit. :D

These are the assembled shots of the fuselage.

These are the wings assembly.

Assembly og the wings to the fuselage and also the nosecone to the fuselage.

Dry fitting of the canopy, I think the fitting is oklah. :D

After completed the assembly of the fuselage, found out there is a hole at the engine area as indicated in photo. There is no further assembly, that's it. Is this normal? How am I suppose to do with the hole? Leave it or any other idea?

Thanks for viewing and C & C are most welcomed.

Looking good, already there is improvement in technique !
Pakistani markings by the looks of the box art, that makes a china copy of the Mig-21F, called a Chengdu F7.....Pakistan didnt use the original soviet version

Good day to you, Landyshah,
Thanks for your comment, appreciated warmly. :D :D
Actually this kit is not a Pakistani's marking. It's mentioned is Finnish.
Yah! the black and white roundel on the box really looks like a Pakistani's marking.
Done some searching through the net, cannot really confirm it, i think it's either the followings:-
1. Mig-21 F-13
2. Mig-21 Bis or
3. Mig-21 Fishbed C,D,E,F.
Whatever it is, this model should be an early version of the fishbed as the canopy is opening to the front and not to the side.
:D  :D

Mr Tigershark
It looks like a Mig 21 F -13 ...Similar to the ones use by AURI/Indonesia........at somepoint in time.....looking good so far........
Only the MF if not mistaken had the side hinge canopy.

My 1/48 MiG-21 (PF Version) comes with the burner cans to fill the void. It's weird that Academy don't provide one in this 1/72 scale  .
You can leave it as it is and blame the manufacturer ( ) or you can fill it yourself with plastic pipes or extra burner can that you may have lying around. The latter option will be more challenging though.
Coming up nicely, Larrance.

Mr B,
Thanks for your comment and information. :D
My impression is that early versions have forward opening canopy and the late versions having the side opening canopy. I guest I'm wrong here.
This Fishbed actually have many versions and copies as well. So damn hard to make clear which is which, you know? :D :P
Have a great day.

Yup! seen your MiG-21 PF, I think there is a spider man somewhere in the fuselage as well.....due to the web thingly. :D :D :D

I think I blamed the mfgr for now. :D or Find a sticker with the right diameter and just stick to it. :D :D ...or make a stand with a rod and shoved it in there and make it fly. :D :D :D (just thinking here only) :D :D
Have a great day.

Dear Masterqq,
Thanks for the encouragement. :D
Well, for the last few days been thinking about it...well here goes...
Project 903-Sub Project.
Firstly look for materials. These are Spacer A & Spacer B.

The next on the list, is the metal base plate.

And lastly on the material list, a pc of metal rod to bend here and bend there.

|
Part two. :D :D
Place the Spacer As to the metal base as shown.

Then insert the metal rod to the center of both Spacer As.

Cover up the top area with Spacer B. Looks better isn't it? :D

and VOILA!! and we have a stand done. :D

Fitting with MiG-21....... :D :D

All materials used are enviroment friendly and is RoHS compliance. :D :D

No MiGs were harmed/damaged in the course of making this stand. :D :D
Now I need to go back and concentrate to finish my MiG-21. :D
Regards to all.

Hello ya'all,
My current this project is on hold at the moment due to I'm waiting on something else to continue. ;)
Anyway I've some pending queries here for all the "sifus" here to help clear for me if I'm doing the right thing as I don't think the wings should look like this.
Based on above pictures, as you can see, there are many ejector pins marks. Yep! I sanded and cleared the marks already but it don't seem right. I"m thinking of applying putty to the areas and then filing & sanding to the same level as the wings. Is applying putty the right method or there is another way?
Regards!

masterqq - June 9, 2009 03:29 AM (GMT)
Tiger..
you can use fill the ejector marks with putty or super glue then sended smooth...
TigerShark - June 10, 2009 01:19 AM (GMT)
MasterQQ,
Thanks for d comment and advice given. ;)
Gonna use putty to do it then. Update again soon & thanks again.

Gundam76,
Thanks for your comment, appreciated that. Still need a lot of learning here.
Hopefully by end of this month can complete it as I'm waiting on something to continue. :ph43r:

Larrance, Wah!!! Lots of improvement here my man :D
To fill the ejector mark or any slit or hole, I recommend you to try Super-Glue (CA) with Baking Powder in ratio of 1 Baking powder and 2 CA glue, use the cheap and thin liquid one. Usually in bottle. Its better than Putty coz its less shrink and faster than putty...

Hi Tiger,
Good build and a very daring attempt at the stand.
I'm not a jet guy but the problem you have with the wings could be that you have stuck the wheel well halves the wrong way. Noticed the edge of the wheel well have braces or shims to help level the part with the wing when fitted and give the impression of depth in the wheel well. If this is done then the ejector marks will be hidden inside instead of being on the outside.
Hope you haven't glued it fast. I hope I'm wrong.
Richard

I think rtfoe is correct.
The lower wing panels are inverted.
If they have been glued solid, the next best thing to do is to fill the inserts or landing gear bay openings with plastic sheet & strip, and then putty and sand it smooth.
This will be OK since you are building it wheels up anyway.

Tuan Major,
I've learned another new trick again. :D :D
Time to on-the-model testing again this weekend. Hopefully raw materials can get on time. :D Super-glue x 2 & baking soda x 1. Interestingggg. :ph43r: :ph43r:
Thanks for your comment and idea sir.
Salute!

Dear Richard san,
Thank you x 3 very much for your pointer.
Oh my god! :o :o :o You are spot on right bro! :o
I really did it this time. :( :(
I did the worst thing a modeller could have done even for a beginner like me. I glued the wrong parts!!
No wonder I feel funny how the ways it looked like. I already assembled the wings a while back, so need major rework now on this Mig now.
Bro, thank you very much for pointing out the mistakes than I've done.
It's no matter what kind of scale modelling you into, the importance is the experince that comes with it. :)
Regards!

Larrance, maybe you can bring the MiG to HHQ this weekend since modellers will be there for the SvGB.

Dear f-4dablemodels,
Yep! Richard is correct on the matter. The wings were glued solid earliar on and now, the next best thing is to rework the Mig.
This will be OK since you are building it wheels up anyway. That's the only comfort now, bro. :D

No wonder It look funny to me earliar and not until you and Richard pointed out the mistakes I've done, I still thought I've done correctly.
Well, Going to cut, file, fill and sand the Mig soon.
Thanks for the comment and advice given.

Bro, I will be at HHQ this weekend (13/6) to admire all the ex-Soviet/Russia models and to learn a thing or two there. :D :ph43r: :D
If all the modellers there give me their's 2 cents worth, I think I'm going to be a very wealthy man soon. :D :D :D experince I mean. :D
Thanks bro, appreciated it very much.

Current updates on P903.
Before Touch-Up.

Appying the putty. The way applied correct or not?

Putty Dried-up, before sandpapering.

Wet sandpapering with #800.

Wet sandpapering with #1500.

The completed result.

As this is the first time I'm doing it, Is those steps taken are correct way? :(
As usual, C & C are most welcomed.

TS, perhaps using plastic card would have been a better and more elegant solution to this in my view. Then you can maintain the shape of the landing gear doors....now with putty you will need rescribe....
Since u used putty, the application should be more controlled...the more u need to sand off, the more risk u have of erasing surrounding surface detail
I would have cut thin card for the doors, using shims to maintain right height, then cement shut. Then skim down the u/c leg hole and fill with a piece of rod/scrap and just a tiny bit of putty before sand.
My 2 cts :D

Landyshah san,
Thanks for the comment. appreciated as always! :D :D
Since u used putty, the application should be more controlled...the more u need to sand off, the more risk u have of erasing surrounding surface detail
This is the first time I'm doing the putty thingy. As the result shown, I'm a long way to go still in this putty thingy. :D
....now with putty you will need rescribe....
This is also another new thingy to me.

This also totally new to me as well.
No inventory yet for these things. Thin cards, shims etc, will be in my shopping list soon. :D
After observed closy, there are a few sink marks, need to re-do again for the sink mark.
Thanks again & regards!
