Title: Stalins Organ
Description: Soviet WW2 Katiyusha Rocket Launcher

rtfoe - May 5, 2009 03:06 PM (GMT)
Hi Soviet GB Comrades,

Just some pix of my Katiyusha progress build that is basically stock standard OOB.

No modes and PE. Don't even know how to super detail it. Just want to see if I can achieve something with just glue and paint.

Quite fun to put together this old Italeri kit. Not surprised with the crisp molding.

user posted image

The tons of rockets was hard work to sand and assemble each having 3 parts.

user posted image

user posted image

The rack was another chore with all the scraping of seamlines and sprue attachments.

user posted image

Painted the cab with a base of dark green and later will detail it with washes and dry brushing.

Thanks for looking.

Richard.

ah! the good ole Italeri kit. Are those rubber wheels? Mine reacted with the styrene hubs and melted them. I'm planning to transplant the 'organs' onto a lend-leased GMC truck.

Keep it coming Bro!!!! Looking good.

How's the fit by the way? I got this kit somewhere in the rubble of stash.... :o

Sgt Buds, Six Zero out!!

Nice subject richard, even with glue and paint it will be a stunner with your hands!

Is the base vehicle a Studebaker truck?

Blackheart - May 6, 2009 03:50 AM (GMT)
:D oooyyeeeeaaaaa soft skin..keep it commin

Richard san,
Niceeeeeeeeeeeee! :D

Are d rockets going to be stationery or in firing mode? :D

rtfoe - May 6, 2009 04:28 AM (GMT)
Thanks Guys for the reply and comments.

Alpha - Tires are rubber and they do react to the plastic as all Italeri rubber tires do so I coated the rims with hardware Krylon acrylic spray paint. Hope this stops the reaction.

Bud - Fit is ok with a little putty and sanding in minor areas. Wish that the fit for the rockets were better. Lots of sanding here.

Shah - As I mentioned, don't know much about the vehicle but it sure looks like a studbaker. The grill I suspect makes it possibly a Soviet design.

Blackheart - Problem with softskins is that theres an interior to finish first before tackling the exterior. :D

This should be nice on grassland base when finished.

Richard.

Thanks Tiger,

Note that even for vehicles there is lots of puttying and sanding. What you see here has been put together from seperate sub assemblies. The Rocket launchers, Cab, Rear body and Chassis can be detached for painting. The tires are also not glued on yet. I'll show you in the next batch of pix.

Careful planning and steps will make building much easier for painting later on.

For this the rockets are going to be fixed stationery just prior to being fired. It is a static display anyway, no pyrotechnics.

Richard.

Alpha7 - May 6, 2009 05:15 AM (GMT)
The truck is a Russian ZiL-157. As discussed on other modelling forums, this is a post-WW2 truck so don't make the mistake of pitting it against the Nazis. To make a WW2 vehicle, you will need to mount the launcher on a ZiS-6, Studebaker or CCKW truck.

As for the build, it looks excellent. Will be watching your progress.

Toja I don't know much about Soviet vehicles. Always thought it looked kind of modenish.

That's why I still have lots of things here to learn still. :D :D

This is where the lines between masters and newbie is differentiated. :D

Hope to learn more from you post here. :D :D :D

this kit is a paradise for paint chipping and rust :P

Richard,

This is one of my favourite item, I have it in Revell, isit the same kit?

PoohBear - May 7, 2009 04:39 AM (GMT)
Hi Rich, your build is migrating over to the SGB armor section ^_^

rtfoe - May 9, 2009 05:08 AM (GMT)
Hi,

Tigershark, the following is the sub assemblies detached.

user posted image

The cab doors can be removed and posed opened.

user posted image

At this time I had given the interior a base paint of olive green and hull red for the seats with a paint brush. Was lazy to break out the airbrush.

user posted image

Notice the amount of bracings for the framework. This is when you thank yourself for having an airbrush. It will make covering all corners with paint that much easier.

user posted image

Close up of the wheels that have been pre-sprayed with acrylic paint to prevent the reaction with the rubber tyres.

user posted image

Another area where airbrushing is needed. If you are hand painting, I suggest painting these individually before assembly.

user posted image

The dash board also has a base coat of olive green.

I'm going to relax this weekend. Also going to see some guys in tutus on stage with my family so no modeling.

Richard.

Yes Ari, soft skin vehicles tend to rust alot. See if I can do justice to it.

Vince, don't know man, I've not seen the Revell version. Could it be a reboxed Italeri kit?

Managed to creep in some time to spray the base coat yesterday.

The parts are still detachable.

Hi, been busy and only touched the "Kat" in the last two days.

You can see the difference in paint filtering layers as that is what it's called now. During my days it was called wash and dry brushing.

Before the layers of paint I mixed up a batch of plaster and Buncho water color earth brown and using a stiff brush I dabbed along the undersides of the undercarraige and wheels.

The cab area. Very suttle post shading with black, dark green and brown.

Oops sorry blurr picture...this shows the mud build up on the back fenders.

user posted image

The rocket rack...

user posted image

You can see the distinct coloration between the base paint and weathered paint.

user posted image

user posted image

Masking the rockets was a pain...there's 16 of them.

Close up of the mud sludge...I sealed it with Future.

user posted image

user posted image

The rockets after the de-masking...still have to seal with Future and weather each one of them.

user posted image

user posted image

Just to see how they look on the mount.

user posted image

There is actually more to do but might just send into the group build as is.

The finer touches like wash, pin wash, dry brushing, rust points and base have yet to be done.

C&C welcomed. Thanks for looking.

Richard.

rtfoe - June 8, 2009 06:21 AM (GMT)
Thanks Guys for the kind word of encouragement,

Incidently I thought the GB was last weekend and had missed the boat due to a trip outstation. Now got at least a week to finish up the "Organ".

Sil,

Yes, the interior will the get the treatment needed to give it the lived in look. The funny thing is I'm working from the outside before the interior.

Koo, I think so too   ...if it wasn't for the Soviet GB I wouldn't have started on this kit. It had been sitting on the shelf for years.

Got the decal on and sealed... now to tackle more weathering.

Richard.
