Title: My First Ship - Calling Landy!
Description: SLC Maiale - Pig/Babi
Bud Bilko - May 2, 2009 04:00 PM (GMT)
Don't get it wrong!! The description says it all - Babi aka Maiale in Italian. This is to heed Landy's call for my first ship group build. I did it today after being busy for 2 1/2' years from model making. Yeap, it was a major achievement (my back's going to hurt in the morning :( )
You can read what is SLC Maiale and kits comments in various articles from the net, magazine or wherever. I won't put that stuff here. Took few pictures to prove that i built. Heard that there's a bookmaker waiting to prove me wrong....
I decided to glue some parts, dry fit here and there and did not sand or putty anything at this juncture. Just want to see how this Babi looks like. My verdict: not bad... not bad at all.
Here goes:

Decided to be cyclops for a while... mata koyak...

PS: At last huh... Will monitor this thread

Part 2:
Decided that it's best to drill few holes on the mini sub cover as seen in documented articles. Like Ferrari, Lambo, Laverda bikes, Vespa, Fiat and etc, Italian is well known for their passion in machines and engineering. This SLC sunk near 200,000 tones of allied ship back in WW2...
(Commercial break...) back to the kit:

The stand:

I decided to try the double whammy mines instead!!!

More coming...

Part 3:
Tu la dia, skali angin mai balik, sampai tengah malam sanggup up date. Mej, Mat Lobang, Mr B and Landy, hangpa ni memang kaki racun.... thanks!!
I also decided to use Felxi File for the curves. This is a good product by the way. Mana mali.... atas sikit Mexico lah... USA.

I also decided to add "little" details like nuts and screws by using punch and die set.... die lah this Babi...

For modelers, I urged you to (i know you know this but i don't care...) make your own sanding sticks. Simple but very effective. Use balsa wood, ice cream sticks, compress foam etc that easily available and easy to handle. Cuba lah hari ini...

More to come....

Bro Badri, nampak gayanye, 1 hari boleh "Kaw thim" ini BABI...
Ganaz bro ganaz... you punye tool kit... Gue saspek habis!!!

Bud Bilko - May 2, 2009 04:25 PM (GMT)
Part 4:
Okay. I have seen enough. This kit has the potential to be a great kit (not mine please) due to the ease and breeze. The only setback was that being Italeri, putty comes into picture. But hey, putty and plastic; they're romantic!!!
More:

I decided to cover the rivets before i start putting putty on the seams tomorrow.

After that all dry fitting, this was the result so far....

I welcome all comments. Cakap baik-baik huh!!! Kasian sama saya tau....:P
Stay tune. More to come.

Bud, use Gunze Dissolve Putty, more manageable and less sanding I presumed...

Bud,
I can just imagine this, you standing in front of a rostrum:
" Hi, I a'm Badri and I am a modellholic. I was sober for 2 years and I was not strong enough to escape from peer pressure. They had me handling a pig.......which looks very much like a cigar cover. I am also sniffling thinner and playing with sharp instruments now. Is there no hope for me??"
Bud Bilko - May 3, 2009 03:08 AM (GMT)
Keh keh keh... otai yang tak suka Petai!!!
Sil, let me check on the extra bands. if i got some, sure, will share with you. The kit varies. If single mines were used, it is about 8 1/2 inch long. Use double whammy, almost 10 1/2 inch long. I planned to use the figures for this time. Yes, this was from Italeri. I was surprised as well. Level of details are first class.
As for the tools, i have been keeping and buying tools for long time. Sometime need not to buy the expensive ones, just get the practical ones and easy to carry around.
Now, where can i find balsa wood in KL? I need plenty. I will share with you sailors what i'm going to do.
Mat Lobang: You are one of the racun fella.... Cigar box, yeap, plenty with the isi...and yes, guys, if you happen to be at any cigar shop, ask for few empty boxes. These are real handy. You can keep your left over decals, PE sets, blades, figures etc. in these boxes and it won't get any silverfish attack on the decals. Guess bau curut tu dia naik meluat kot??!!! :D

Yo Bud,
Good to see you building. Always thought you were secretly assembling and hiding you post.
Very nice subject too to revive glue sniffing, sanding and painting.
Because of your post I must get me one of those.
Great comeback.
Richard.

Tuan Sarjana!
Saw this Maiale at MH during my last visit when they were still at SS14. Dah banyak kali dok angkat-letak. Now I regret that I didn't get it.
Betul la... tak nampak mcm Italeri.
rtfoe - May 4, 2009 07:31 AM (GMT)
Hi Bud,
If you're in the vicinity of AmCorp mall, the model RC shop on 2nd floor opposite the magazine shop has balsa you might be looking for. Art shop pun ada, Multifilla pun ada.
Richard.

go to the Hobby Tech RC shop, which is directly above the RC World RC shop. Actually there are 3 RC shops there.
Go to Hobby Tech, the owner is not as fierce as the bottom owner. (my opinion..dun flame..hahahah)

Part 5:
Phewwwwwwweeeetttt!!!
Okay. I had a fun today. After a week lapse, i'm back not to finish this babi/maiale!! Firstly, i'll start with tips of the week. Don't throw away your wallet (i mean old ones) as they're a gem especially leather ones. I have been keeping this for years now in my modeling tool kit bag. And have been using it. You can detail your 1/9 bikes, infantry belts, army duffel bags, etc. Prefer the calf hide for this (i don't use pig skin for some religious reason)

Secondly, cigar happens to be my favorite past time companion (other species too)!! Inside all cigar tubes, manufacturers included a thin layer (paper thin) of Cedar wood to trap water and keep the tobacco fresh. Cut and use this for your F4U, F6, Spitfire or Hurricane, Me109, Me110 and etc. This is superb!!

Bud Bilko - May 10, 2009 01:52 PM (GMT)
Part 7.
Up dates. I decided not to paint this bugger this week. Instead, i 'm taking my own sweet time to "getting to know" this babi/Maiale......
You can't call this kit Italeri if it doesn't require any filling. There was two (2) choices of filler. 1st was Sqdn white and green putty - Nope!! 2nd, Gunze Dissolved Putty- decided to try this one as suggested by Herr Mej!! It turn out to be okay. (i'm a fan of sqdn putty and have been using them for years. great stuff ).
Maiale seats are made from wood. I decided to use 260 grit to resemble wood grain.

Putty time:

Slowly-slowly catch the monkey....

More ahhh....
Bud Bilko - May 10, 2009 01:59 PM (GMT)
Part 8:
After feeling satisfied (aaaahhhhh...) with sanding, i decided to try my old method of checking flaws etc. Car and bikes modelers uses this technique. I use Model Wax to check the gluing, sanding etc and at the same time, prepare it for priming as well...
You can use any brands you like. I used Autosol once on my Spitty... my uncle complaint why am i looking at his baldy head using the wing!!!

Like peanut butter eh.....

Smooth....yea babi!!!

More....and more....
Sgt Buds, Six Zero out!!
Bud Bilko - May 10, 2009 02:06 PM (GMT)
Part 9,
I know, i know.. some may "spot" a line or two on this babi/maiale. But i can tell you this, it is smooth.
Okay, i decided to use brass tube for the control links. This is from "Singa Mengaum" - Lion Roar lah...

Neat stuff.
The i started to use the kit PE set. Not bad but a bit hard. I like it that way.

And oh yes, I might be building a small dio for this. Might.....
From the stash...found relevant stuff.

More up dates this week...later :P
