One of the most beautiful boats to serve in our Navy

Tamiya's old faithful, almost 40 yrs old. Cutting edge in its day. I will build it with SS12 missiles which were fitted later in their life in place of the original torpedoes. And this is how it will look....not a colour scheme you see often!!

Thank you to Sgt Bud for the references....will get down on this soon as I finish the Pinkfire...

OK, sprues washed and laid out.

user posted image

Looking back, the China copy MHM version I built earlier is simplified in some aspects but not much.

This is old school Tamiya with different sprues having different colours..this kit came out in the early 70's! The hull seems to be moulded in grey/red. Deck is dark green, guns and torpedoes black, props are gold (!) and superstructure parts in grey. I suppose you can build it without painting and should look ok!

They also give you some string and chain, plus metal rods for the propeller shafts.

References pasted up:
user posted image

For this build, some scratch work needed:
1. Torpedoes not fitted and replaced with 4 long range fuel tanks
2. SS 12 missiles and launcher to be made
3. Curved braces for rear transom plate
4. Canvas tarpaulin over the open bridge
5. Anything else I can pick up from pics....

Colour scheme is the interesting part here, RMN ship in brown/green camo!

anyway, a few subs are ready or will be ready for the ASuW game........

Interesting

Imagine hypothetical contest between S Boot, Perkasa, PT Boat? All are torpedo and gun armed

Who you think will win?

Bud's pig can maybe beat them all flat...only at night and in the harbour la

Some small update tonight:

1. Started to assemble the hull parts as usual. Rear transom plate and spray shield, propshafts and rudders. Everything just falls together in typical Tamiya style. Added the first little mod, two curving supports made from sprue
user posted image

2. Added deck to hull, and left to dry overnight.
user posted image

The Tamiya mouldings are still sharp, detail excellent, fit is great and instructions are first class...and this mould dates from 1971..thats just two years after the Pinkfire. HUGE difference....same old story how the Japs overtook the West in everything...cars, electronics and model kits too

landyshah - May 28, 2009 03:41 PM (GMT)
Wee bit done tonight. Fit is superb, parts clean, making assembly a doddle...

1. 40mm Bofors done. Some fine wire added to represent cables and hoses. Gun muzzle drilled open
user posted image

2. Oerlikon twin mount
user posted image

Touches of superglue recommended to hold and line up the fiddly bits and frames, then assembly is kacang puteh

druid_99 - May 29, 2009 12:40 AM (GMT)
Shah, you might want to visit the Resources section under the General sub-section. I have taken quite a few pictures of the 40mm Bofors and Oerlikon twin barrel gun.

sky_tokyodrifter - May 29, 2009 03:08 AM (GMT)
arghhhhhhhhhh abg shah. more racunnnnnnn  Those guns have really strong effect on me hahaha

landyshah - May 29, 2009 04:29 AM (GMT)
Thanks Imran, I was using some earlier photo I had for my first Perkasa...but ur pics are very useful esp the Oerlikon..I like the gunsight, hmmm how to make...

Shame how they never restore Seri Terengganu properly...the paint look like simply slap on  Might take a trip down to Melaka come to think of it

Good ref there on the canvas bumbung for the bridge as well...

azlandiver - May 29, 2009 04:46 AM (GMT)
shah.....gigi gigi bawah oerlikon tu tanak potong & gantikan dengan yg brass or besi punye ke? nampak lagi real ooo :D

ambik dari mana2 toys yang ada mechanism parts or dari RC ke :P

seamline kat situ pon belom buang lagi ye?

landyshah - May 29, 2009 06:23 AM (GMT)
Clean up tak buat lagi bro, i cemented all dulu...otherwise too tiny to handle for my giant finger haha...lepas dah kering solid then ill tidy it up with scalpel/needle file

Gear...good idea, but too late :P Hardly can see anyway when ready, not worth the hassle

landyshah - May 29, 2009 10:47 AM (GMT)
Late evening progress:

1. The "Mark 2" Perkasa has 4 extra fuel tanks mounted on the side deck. The position of the front 2 look to be the same as the original "Mark 1" torpedo mounts, but the rear two are more forward, in line with the main cabin. Therefore the rear 2 torpedo mounts needed to be removed. Also, various other small deck fitting have been cemented on.
user posted image

2. The original mounts are covered with plastic sheet, which will be blended in later. Also, need to fill in the holes for the torpedo gantry arms which are no longer used. I built up the mounting bases for the fuel tanks by modifying the kits torpedo mounts. Some artistic licence as I have no detail ref of the mountings (unless anyone can help?) Just use some "gizmology" here :D
user posted image

3. Just a hint of the detail on the mouldings...still sharp after so many years. Unfortunately, I will cut these off, as I am building KD Gempita (P 152) in her 1971 fit. My earlier build was KD Pendekar (P153) in 1967 fit. I chose Gempita because she was the first RMN ship to ever fire a missile.

I think shah isn either using kinetic power or even nuclear power...

shah,
U will br the best modeller of 2009.

landyshah - May 30, 2009 03:23 AM (GMT)
Eh dont say like that la, its not a competition who build more or fast la bro.....janji we are happy with our work and enjoy this hobby in our own pace and style..thats most important :D

landyshah - May 30, 2009 08:11 AM (GMT)
Saturday afternoon bondite fetish thanks to Imran, no 1 bondite supplier:

1. Decided to mould the 4 fuel tanks from bondite. Simple square shape, so used a old business card box with measurement marks as the jig, and plastic card to adjust the shape. Bedak to prevent sticking
user posted image

2. Voila, four tanks ready. Shape can be steadily fine tuned as it hardens. To sand smooth after drying, then add some detail
user posted image

landyshah - May 30, 2009 04:19 PM (GMT)
Once the tanks harden, final sanding to get the shape balanced and surface smooth. After that CA them to their bases (made from kit parts chopped up), then add some PE braces and also other fittings eg fuel hose, filler cap, breather, control unit etc for each.

I dont have exact ref, so its based on some common sense and whatever i can make out from the pics....as long as it looks the part...

Impressive build, landyshah! Will follow this thread closely. :D

azlandiver - May 31, 2009 09:14 AM (GMT)
Now bondite fetish plak ye huhuhu

The tank looks good bro

hashaney - May 31, 2009 09:23 AM (GMT)
Wah wah wah!!! Sakan main bondite nmpak :D...

Err, cume ade ckit nampak janggal, PE strap nampak tak fully "wrap" around the tank. Nampak mcm ade sharp kink lah bro... and then ade strap tak sama... memang sengaja ke?

The Left forward tank pun nampak senget semacam, nmpak gaye mcm nak jatuh ke laut aje sbb kaki brace dia nmpk senget... kot dry fit agaknye...

landyshah - May 31, 2009 09:28 AM (GMT)
Mejar: semua main taroh atas deck jer, so belum adjust and gam lagi..tu yg senget. Yang PE tu, u r rite, sudah nampak dan sudah repair. Now all curving to fit. Kaler some strap lain cos it recycled old PE so ader bekas cat dulu. Gracias :D

Sunday afternoon:

1. Built up various cabin interior parts. Added some throttle levers and telephone handset cables
user posted image

2. Cabin exterior assembled, some wiring added to radar

landyshah - June 1, 2009 04:02 PM (GMT)
Start some small painting work - cabin and bridge following colours as per kit instruction. Wash and drybrush for some contrast. No weathering, dirt, rust or chipping etc as this boat is spick and span
