Title: Cptan: Gb - Wip Revell Swift Boat

cptan - April 22, 2009 08:56 AM (GMT)
As I'm not sure what's the standard title or subject to put so I just simply taruk and start posting my WIP...

OK I'm building the Revell 1/48 scale SWIFT BOAT. It's a very very old kit from my stash.

Typical Revell old kits scenerio:
- Box labeled with skill level 2
- and some small parts broken from the "tree" and roaming loose in the box.
- parts tree without "frame" (nowonder the smaller parts broken off.
- Lucky the parts were all sealed in a big plastic beg
- one sheet of decal with US flag and one set of ship number PCF-10 (pity only one boat number provided)
- One tree with transparent plastic for all the windows.
- a total of 62 pc parts
- One pc hull measure about 31cm
- One pc Deck
- 4 parts joint to become the cabin

Here's a site of SWIFT BOAT action in Vietnam war... Brownwater-navy.com

From the reference site, I can see that there're 2 type of paint scheme, one is the Greenish Gray (like the PBR), while another is the typical NAVY Gray...

Or any expert can verify the colour will be greatly appreciated.

OK, I'll take a slow beat to build this boat as I've still other kits to complete.

Stay tune for the next WIP.

OK guys,

As mentioned earlier, this gonna be a slow build... not much progress since I'm focusing more on the "tugu" project for the coming Merdeka GB....

One thing good about building US military subject, U got loads of reference info on the net.... So I've got this great ref site for the SWIFT BOAT TOUR

The first thing to do is detailing the twin 50 cal machine gun tub. Base on the ref pict, I like the look of the ammo belt laid "around" the side along the tub...

I've to start with the MG tub simply because the twin MG supposed to be movable (U know Revell lar...) and the "moving ring" goes in between the 2 part tub which is moulded with the large cabin...
Pict A the ring for the movable MG tub, Pict B and C with additional plastic cards glue on and test fit on the tub... Pict D completed the "curve" ammo belt boxes and test mount the 50 cal MG. Pict E recruit a Hasegawa 1:48 pilot to test fit... For the ammo belt, I remember I did bought some PE ammo belt from Miniature Hobby back when they're still in Mid Valley... just can'y remember where I put it and whether the scale is correct???

The 3 part cabin were moulded with bulky hand rail each side.... Eeeeeeaak!! I've carefully chiseled and sand them off which later will replace with wires.

Next I've notice all the air vent funnel of the kit are moulded without hole as shown in Pict F... so modification to open up these hole as Pict , H and I.

After the preparation of the above are ready, I've glue the cabin together.

That's all for now... stay tune for the next update (I also don't know when)

Hmm...must have missed this thread.

Perhaps its still not to late. Here are a few more sites which may help you and anybody else interested in Swift & Nasty boats. My interest came about from my interest in MACV-SOG and my dream to build one from scratch which will likely remain a dream. :(

Specs of the different Mark versions of Swift
Excellent site for pics of Vietnam riverine craft. Some searching required for Swifts
Another good site for pics of Vietnam riverine craft
Links to various Swift boat sites
Pics of Swift boats but mostly black & white pics.

CP if you still need info pop over to my house and we can check out additional pics on my Osprey book on Vietnam riverine craft.

Ok-dokey CP. Did some checking last night and the version you are having is the Mk. 1. Difference between the Mk.1 and Mk.2 being the length and height of the cabin, round portholes aft instead of sliding windows, some additions of bunks, folding table, etc. for the interior and some an extra ammo container on deck if I'm not mistaken.

As for the color they came from US as ocean haze grey (basically the US Navy's grey) and as soon as they were in-country they got slap on with olive drab.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Beach, for the info.... Olive Drab will be painted then.

This is going to be nice CP...slow is my kind of pace. :D

In 1990 when I visited Bankok, I saw these Swift boats along the Chao Praya. They were in Grey scheme. Dunno if they're still in service with the Thai Navy.

Always wanted to get me one of these.

Richard.
