Title: Wrc Gb: Toyota Corolla 1999 Portugal Rally
Description: WRC Group Build

druid_99 - April 14, 2009 05:04 AM (GMT)
Hi guys,

To get the balls rolling for the WRC Group Build, I have selected the Toyota Corolla 1999 Portugal Rally. I am building the car #3 driven by Carlos Sainz for this.

There are a lot of parts in this build and as I recall when I buy this kit, all the parts has been cut out from the sprue and all the sprues is not in the box... It will be quite a challenge to figure things out. Lucky that all the parts is complete. I have assembled some of the parts a few years back before putting it back on the shef (I tend to do this with my model kits... :D ) and I think this is the best time to get this car completed.

The best part about this model kit is that it even includes the headphones used by the driver and co-driver and PE parts for it as well.

The headphones.

The PE parts which includes the headgear for the headphones.

Luckily I have cleaned and assembled the roll-cage a few years back and I don't have to go through the hassle again...

Some works that is done previously. I have glued the rear spoiler and fill the oil cap area. I assume the fuel cell used in this car is put in from other opening since the instruction says to fill in the hole.

Finally, the decals for this car... it's still looks good with no yellowing whatsoever... Just hope it is not brittle after all this years.

That's all for now... more to come in a few days hopefully... :D

Way to go, Imran!

I've got 2x of the Hasegawa Corolla WRC and 1x of the Tamiya Corolla WRC, which says a lot about what I think of the car.

I drive an AE111 which is the basic model on which the Corolla WRC is built on, and I have to say that many of the details like the dashboard and floor pan details, undercarriage seems to be spot on.

PcEvo - April 14, 2009 10:06 AM (GMT)

FYI.... I just got a Hasegawa WRC cars and to my surprise there's aren't any PE parts and the 'Red color' mud flat on their new release...mayB is cutting cost... :(

druid_99 - May 13, 2009 01:46 AM (GMT)
Not much progress other than drilling some holes to make it easier for me to paint the car. The details will be added later after the painting and decal process.

I have drilled the hole on the roof airscoop, front bonnet clip and rear bonnet clip and will add the details when thc body is painted and decaled.

I have also started to drill and remove the molded on mesh on the front grille and will be replacing it with steel mesh to make it easier to paint and add more depth on the area. Two drilled out and removed... 8 more to go... <_< <_<

Tonight will try to get some parts painted... :)

sky_tokyodrifter - May 13, 2009 01:52 AM (GMT)
hoho ^_^ finally continued bro hehe. Wah youre mods look to be killer ones. Your eyes tak "koyak" ke bro drilling those holes? :D

Entau - May 13, 2009 02:36 AM (GMT)
the open grill will definetly make it much more realistic, but the process very sakit mata

whats that green stuff u r using, putty kah?

druid_99 - May 13, 2009 04:33 AM (GMT)
Sky: Yup... finally I can continue after I have passed my friends' bicycle frame that he ask me to touch-up. I have to use the smallest drill-bit that I have and drill the hole one by one and then using knife to cut the excess plastic to make the hole...

Entau: The green stuff is Squadron's Green Putty. That is the only putty that I have but I prefer Squadron's White Putty though. It's easier to work with and easy to dilute by only using industrial putty.

Entau - May 13, 2009 04:40 AM (GMT)
oh, ic..drying time fast?

Not that fast but ok lah... usually it takes about half an hour to an hour for a thick application of putty. If normal application usually about 15 minutes before it is sandable... Approximately lah... I've never really look at the clock when waiting for the putty to harden. :D

azlandiver - May 13, 2009 07:19 AM (GMT)
DK san..... :D

you said drilling some holes to make easier for you to paint.......how's that?

boleh elaborate ke?

i'm starting to do cars back so gotta learn more from the king ;)

PcEvo - May 13, 2009 08:23 AM (GMT)
Drilling those 'tiny' holes or grills really takes patient and time.. i remember doing the same thing on my Batman Forever Batmobile..ouch!....but the outcome when replace it with mesh is truely cool... Happy Drilling Imran

I also prefer using Squadron's White putty and is really can last ..mine oredi 5 years i think... :P

not sure about the TMY white putty....anyone use before?

druid_99 - May 14, 2009 01:19 AM (GMT)
AzlanDiver: Actually, there are plastic that replicates the nuts and bolts on the surface of the drilled area. To paint and to get a smooth finish around the nots and bolts can be tedious and stressful so, by removing the plastic nuts and bolts, I can paint it and compound and polish without the worry of any orange peeling that might be visible around the bolt area. The details will be added later using wires or other alternatives.

PcEvo: Yup, the drilling part really tests my patience.

Continuing the progress. Not much is able to be done last night. My family is celebrating my mother's birthday and can only start with the progress at 11.00PM. Not much is done apart from more drilling and filing....

Finally, I finished drilling after 3 hours... These are the results...

I have also drilled out the side indicators as the ones molded in the body was flat... I will use Bondite and make the housing more realistic.

Now I can start the fun part.... painting the interiors... yayyyy!!!

klay - May 14, 2009 02:34 AM (GMT)
looking good bro :)

PcEvo - May 14, 2009 02:45 AM (GMT)

Looks like there'll be a lot of sanding to do brother druid_99..

Entau - May 14, 2009 02:47 AM (GMT)

The roughness is actually the dust from the drilling and filing. I have actually sand off any roughness present during the drilling process. :D

druid_99 - May 19, 2009 03:37 AM (GMT)
Some update (no pictures though).

All the parts are finally cleaned up. Parting lines removed and ejection marks filled.... Now is the stage where I will be much slower... the putty sanding stage... luckily not much sanding needs to be done...

<_< <_< <_<

Entau - May 19, 2009 04:11 AM (GMT)

Not today lah bro... just the same boring white plastic... maybe a bit cleaner lah... hahaha...

Yup... I purchase the Squadron Green Putty from HHQ last year if I'm not mistaken.

Entau - May 19, 2009 08:33 AM (GMT)
hoho, ok, thanks ^_^

druid_99 - May 26, 2009 12:35 AM (GMT)
Finally, there are some updates... and with pictures... :D

The body is cleaned up, primed using Mr. Surfacer 500 and then Mr. Base White. This is not the final colour. It will be coated with a few more layers of Super White before decaling and clear coating.

From the picture below, you can see that I have made a new housing for the side indicators as the original ones are too flat. I just fill in the holes using Bondite, then using a round thing (in this case, the back of my mechanical pencil) dipped in some talcum powder and push it inwards. It looks much better now.
user posted image

The interior was also painted. Again, this is not the final colour. The primary colour will be painted later and clearcoated as well.

The rollcage is also cleaned, primed and painted white. It still needs some black paint and some extra details.

user posted image

The dashboards. Now it needs some decal and carbon fibers...
user posted image

The parts below has been primed and painted black. All this parts will be in a few shades of metallic finish (sillver, chrome, gold and titanium) before it can be considered complete.

The parts below was also treated with primer and black paint. This parts will be coated with carbon fibers. :D :D :D

That's all on the latest update. More updates coming soon... :D

sky_tokyodrifter - May 26, 2009 12:49 AM (GMT)
huyooo very fast liow. Prime already. Can't wait to see the CF on

druid_99 - May 26, 2009 01:02 AM (GMT)
Not fast lah... still needs a few coats of Super White before decal.

The CF decal will be tricky with all the small2 parts.

Entau - May 26, 2009 03:26 AM (GMT)
everything looks good :D

looking foward the small cf parts :P

Wahahahaha... good observation there Sky (konon) hahaha...

I drill off the headlights and will do the same with the side indicators. Then I will stretch some clear sprues, sand to shape, fit it in the hole and wallaaa... instant light bulb... Painted clear orange for the side indicator bulbs... :D

Can... I use debit card for almost all my purchases (until HobbySearch mess up my debit card purchases... <_< ). My personal advise to you, do not use debit card for purchases from HobbySearch.... they will only charge the card 6 (six) months after your first purchase... (Now I have to pay nearly RM1k to activate my card back... )

snakeripper - May 29, 2009 06:35 AM (GMT)
