Title: What The Heck Is Puckerpunyal?
Description: Aussie Tank Museum
enghui - April 11, 2009 05:02 AM (GMT)
Hi guys,I just got back from Melbourne. My Uncle Gary who was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Australian Armored forces, took me for a tour around the museum.
The later said in the old days ,he would have been able to organize a tank ride!
Darn I wish I went there sooner.Anyways here are a few pics form the trip,I took in total almost 100pictures.
The best part is, most tanks were in natural paint,as close to their normal color as possible.Very few glossy displays. This place has a souvenir and model shop also which is small but inculdes resin figures and is quite up to date.

klay, its the camera, blurry pics remove pimples ,warts, blackheads ,blond hair and moustaches. Its good to look at real hardware not to mention smell it.
Zaidi, Puckerpunyal is the name of the base.Like Sungai Besi Air Base, this is Puckerpunyal Armoured Base(or something like that)It has a museum within the operational base, there were M1 Abrams somewhere...hiding in the operational hangars.

You're one lucky guy.
I've only read about the muzium on the net sometime back. If I'm not mistaken it has the Australian armored school nearby or something like that.
It has one of the best displays of armour this side of the world.
Show more pix.
Did you get to go to the War muzium. I hear it's also very good with lots of dioramas.
Richard.

Hi,
Puckapunyal is an army base in Victoria. I went there for a school trip recently. The puckapunya base is like a community, they have cricket pitches, golf course and football pitches! The tank museum was inconveniently closed so we didn't get to see the full museum. So instead we had a sneak peak of the new Abrams tank, it was ginormous! Coolest machine i've ever seen in my life, better than most tanks in the museum. The armour is something like 1 metre thick, and we couldn't take photos as it was confidential. But the museum was great, I think the main highlight was a captured German 88mm anti-air gun. There were some Russian tanks and also a couple used in the Vietnam war. In fact, after visiting Puckapunyal I immediately went to a hobby shop and started modelling! All in all Puckapunyal is a great place for all tank lovers. I think next month we are going to Point Cook, also in Victoria to have a look at the RAF museum. Looking forward to it!

We saw the M1 and I managed to get into the drivers seat! We also saw a troop carrier, i can't remember the model names but it was used in Vietnam and that model was elongated to make the current model. We managed to sit in those and we managed to go inside the back and in the gunners position, our teacher is a top Australian Army historian, Mark Johnston, he is the author of many books and he had connections with the duty officer to go into the museum. The officer was sick so one of the warrant officers from the school of armour allowed us to go into the hanger! No words can describe the M1 Abrams it is gigantic, apparently it has a computer range of 4km!
