Kenny, I just searched and find out that it is an Armoured Wickham Trolley (AWT) and was used during the communist insurgency. 42 units of the AWT was bought by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM). It has two drivers control on the front and back and a rotating cupola that is equipped with machine gun and searchlight.

More info on this here (in malay). More useful information here (in english).

Here is the picture of the armored car before it is refurbished.

Looks like another scratchbuilding candidate for the Merdeka group build... :D

Interesting findings there Kenny!

Anyone want to build this for MGB '09?

druid_99 - March 25, 2009 01:39 AM (GMT)
I think it is possible to build. The cupola looks like the ones on the Ferret but slightly different.

Just need the exact measurement before reducing it to 1/35th scale. :D Kenny, did you bring a measuring tape with you during the visit?

aha,,,.. the "ferret" builder speaks,...

Kenny i think if you can supply the measurement we can expect to see this is MGB09 :D

isnt that right imran.. :D

where is the location of this train Kenny?

According to an article in the www.malaysian-museums.org website, there are 3 AWT in the country. Here's an excerpt:

QUOTE
There are three Wickham trolleys currently in the country and KTM has generously given them away to various museums from their stores in Klang over the years.

The best place to see the 2-ton Armored Wickham Trolley in KL is to catch the AWT 63 at the Royal Police Museum in Lake Garden. It is painted in Police blue but with KTM logo and this indicates that it was used by the Police Force. Inside Gallery C of the museum, is an informative black and white photo showing men on top of the Wickham preparing the guns and search lights.

For the best view of the Wickham and how the AWT protects train, then check out the 2nd Wickham trolley at the Malaysian Armed Forces Museum in Port Dickson. AWT 60 has a grey body and it is parked in front of a Steam locomative and a passenger coach. This is probably the same orientation when AWT was in full service in those Emergency Days and is undoubtably the best display of the role played by the armored train.

The KTM Mini Museum at the Old KL Train Station also has a brief information on the three Wickham Trolleys and their whereabouts, but no display.

The last Wickham -AWT 56 is at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Memorial in KL. However there is little information on the AWT.

Haha, it looks hilariously cute!

But is it self propelled (got engine?) or just towed along as a carriage?

Shah, from my reading, it has an engine and it is used for rail checking and scouting. Quoted below is excerpts from the sites that I have listed in my previous reply.

QUOTE
When the Malayan communist insurgency peaked, railway services particularly the railroads became favorite targets of guerilla saboteurs. As the conflict escalated, the terrorists became bolder at blowing up rail tracks and inflicted heavy human cost.

The devastation soon overwhelmed the authority and a quick fix to the problem was urgently needed.

Before too long, the security forces found their answer in the British made armored Wickham Trolley – a tank look-alike except it ran on train tracks. The trolleys were originally manufactured by D Wickham & Co of Ware, Hertfordshire and to brought to Malaya by the colonial administration.

Each of the 2-ton Wickham Trolleys or AWT, was armed with search light and machine guns on the turret. They were immediately deployed in key roles as front guard and to provide cover for interstate train services.

Subsequent insurgent attempts to disrupt railway services were met fiercely by government soldiers in these self-powered Wickhams on steel wheels. AWT quickly proved itself to be a deterrent force and provided all-weather and round-the-clock protection for all trains.

However, when the Emergency ended in 1960, AWT triumphing records were cut short and many of the AWTs were left idle at KTM sheds in Klang. Their formidable fighting tales began to fade with time too.

Hope this answers your question Shah.

Lan: If I can get the measurements, I will try and build it for the MGB09... hehehe...

Argrillion - March 26, 2009 12:37 AM (GMT)
I will be heading back to the museum soon with measuring tapes and an angle protector to take measurements. One trip is scheduled for this SUN but I am not sure how much museum time I have for this trip though. :(

Anyhow, thank you everyone for your kind response.

multifilla - March 27, 2009 02:10 AM (GMT)
Hope you will not be ISA with the measuring tape as taking Photos is sensitive enough. :o

:( yup I agree with you..it's happened to me :(..display for view only

druid_99 - March 27, 2009 03:20 AM (GMT)
Hahaha... you guys should see when Naza was at the PD museum with measuring tapes and all...

So far he is still here...

By the way, I don't think it's a big issue here since the displayed items (the armored train) is already decommissioned.

PoohBear - March 27, 2009 05:48 AM (GMT)
Enghui's foil trick with the lights would do nicely here.

rtfoe - March 27, 2009 07:43 AM (GMT)
Yup, seven lights altogether. :D

enghui - March 31, 2009 07:20 AM (GMT)
Darn! Foiled again.....

seroiusly though ,interesting subject .I would like to see this built up. :)

cengitu - April 2, 2009 04:08 AM (GMT)
It was used to scout CT threat during The Emergency. Had a crew of 2-4 to manned the trolley ( my late uncle was a driver of these beast )!..

Had own engine and move 1-2km ahead of a normal train. Mine you siiting in these trolley with the heat from the engine, enclose all windows and together with the tropics heat. Mcm hot sauna!.. My late uncle told me that sitting inside this trolley were like hell..

Some of these trolley were ambushed by CT which the bullet easily bounced off!.

I added some photos of the AWT taken at the Police Museum and PD to the Resource page on our society website. Didn't make any measurements but hope they can help if anyone plans to scratchbuild it.

I'll be laughing until stomach cram if I see this train running alone on the rail tracks. If it was ever printed green, it'll look exactly like giant kuih pandan on rail!

this some sort of kuih pandan lah which save a lot of peoples who traveled via KTM during the emergency. Patrolling the rail rain or shine. Oh the patriotic side of me, ^_^

cengitu - October 12, 2009 03:42 AM (GMT)
agreed...No matter what the size and look of these Armoured trolley, it saved thousand of lives by patrolling the railway tracks and the sacrifice of the soldiers who operated it.
