Title: What The Heck Is A Kajapa?
Description: 1/35 Kanonenjagdpanzer
enghui - March 21, 2009 03:41 AM (GMT)
Hi guys, Kajapa is short for Kanonenjagdpanzer.A 1960s German Tank Destroyer.
You can see the heritage from the Jagdpanzer IV.Low slung, slightly offset gun.
from wikipeida:
The Kanonenjagdpanzer 4 - 5 (also known as Jagdpanzer Kanone 90mm, or tank destroyer, gun) was a German post-war tank destroyer equipped with a 90mm anti-tank gun. Its design was very similar to that of the World War II Jagdpanzer IV. Between 1966 and 1967, 770 were built by Hanomag and Henschel for the Bundeswehr. They were tracked and lightly armoured turretless vehicles, fast and highly mobile, with a crew of four (commander, driver, gunner, loader). Eighty of them were delivered to Belgium from April 1975 onward.
When the Soviets began to deploy their T-64 and T-72 tanks, the 90mm gun became obsolete. Moreover, experienced World War II tank hunters pointed out the deficiencies of the casemate design, which limited the horizontal firing angle of the gun to only 15° on either side. During 1983 - 1985, thus, 163 of these tank destroyers were converted into missile carrying tank destroyers (Raketenjagdpanzer) Jaguar 2 by replacing the gun with a TOW missile launcher and adding some armour. The others were refitted into scout and spotting vehicles (Beobachtungspanzer) for the artillery, particularly the mortar units, by removing the main gunThe build:-This the Revell 1/35 scale Kanonenjagdpanzer. Its molded in Revell's normal green plastic. The detail is a bit on the soft side and not up to par with Dragon, Trumpeter or Tamiya's moldings.Strangely revell's aircraft kits dont have this problem.
A lot of the detail was improved as you can see.The mallet canvas cover was made from Epoxy putty, it was simply drapped across the existing cover.I made it a bit thicker at the bottom so the gun had a slightly higher elevation.
Interior hatch detail was also scratch built.Photo etch was added for the smoke dischargers and brass sheet was cut for the clamps.
And oh yes the machine gun was taken from a Tamiya Leopard2 A5.The Revell one is rubbish compared to this and the Tamiya kit has 1 extra .:P

I thot it was some Tamil Tigers armoured car when i saw the thread title :D
But its this fella laaaa....also called Jaguar or more well known as Jagdpanzer Kanone....
Looks good so far...will you be finishing it in camo or standard NATO german green? Agree with you that Revell aircraft are much better than their AFV...maybe cos they still use a lot of ancient moulds in the catalogue?
Silantra - March 21, 2009 02:22 PM (GMT)
i also thought this is tamil thinghy.... shah nko ingat itu padiyappa ke??
enghui, i never knew u're into tank... nice work so far........
landyshah - March 21, 2009 02:55 PM (GMT)
HAHAH u also thot is tamil . I burst out laughing here
Padiyappa ker Payasam ker Kajappa?
You kajapa? Saya kaja opis! :P
enghui - March 21, 2009 04:26 PM (GMT)
Thanks Landy and Zaidi.Ya , I love tanks too. :)
Landy, it will be in 2 tone Olive Drab and Middle Stone. If I do it in modern Nato I ll have to remove the gun barrel(due they were mod to be observation vehicles then). This is however a new kit 2008 release and not a reissue. So its so sad why they cant use the same plastic as they use in the aircraft.
Ungaleka Nalada, Guiness Stout!

There he goes again. Another out of this world, totally retro subject.

Asoh!! No wonder you asking about how to pose the tank figures.  Nice tank there.
Looks like something between WW2 and present day. The color skeem you're choosing also changgih.
If I can recall, these guys carried lots of camo nets.
One more idea of a pose if you'd like: Tank commander leaning over the side reading a modern road sign with map in his hand. If you can open the drivers hatch, you can pose both the loader and driver arguing over getting lost.  This is if you're doing a vignette.
On the tank on its own then the crew having a "siesta" on it should be interesting, probably one with shirt off.
I'm sure you have something up your sleeve but a tank on its own without figures also can look nice especially with your changgih skill and presentation.
Richard.
enghui - March 23, 2009 11:55 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys,
Loo, Strasky and Hutch in small hand towels would be interesting...but I dont really see that happening.
Vince,I agree Guiness is awesome stuff.
Richard, this build was inspired after visiting your "last bastion of manhood".
Tanks can be fun too!Hopefully I can changgih my way through this kit.I will probably add 1 or 2 figures, depending on what I dig up.
enghui - March 26, 2009 03:22 AM (GMT)
Preshading,

Base camo applied, shading was done with the olive drab darkened and lightened.Sprayed as vertical strokes to mimick rain streaking and to apply more intrest to the large flat areas.

The second color is Middle Stone, weird, I know, but thats what the instructions say.I couldnt find any pics of this scheme anywhere so this is my interpetation(Lost in Interpetation)Still I like it , kinda looks like a Soviet scheme.

The lenses were drilled out, a small piece of blue tack put inside for adhesion.

Alluminium foil was punched with a normal paper punch.Later it was pushed in and shaped with a cotton bud to get a smooth surface on the inside for maximum reflection.

Later clear plastic circle piece will be put on top to cover it.

enghui,
From what I understand, the brown patches would probably be temporarily applied water soluble paint which in all likelihood was roughly applied.
They seem to have done that during the late 70's and early-mid 80's, possibly to provide some visual differences between 'blue' and 'red' force units during the annual summer maneuvres like Reforger.
The Kajapa really reminds me of the days of the cold war which were really the good ol' days! (compared with more recent years)
Things may have been on the brink back then, but there was always an element of certainty about how things might turn out and who the bad guys were.
Best part is: for all the sabre rattling and training for war, next to no one amongst the troops actually believed war would break out.
PoohBear - March 26, 2009 04:38 AM (GMT)
Neat idea on the lights. :)
rtfoe - March 26, 2009 07:50 AM (GMT)
Huyo!! The lights really changgih man. Makes me wanna modify my Cupchai lights.
The tank looks menacing and can pass off as a vehicle from Aliens film.
Revell is it? Must get me one.
Richard.
f-4dablemodels - March 26, 2009 09:05 AM (GMT)
enghui,
How do you plan to handle the lenses?
enghui - March 26, 2009 11:22 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the info Jason :) Now I understand where this strange scheme came from.
Thanks Pooh, was trying to use foil because silver paint just aint shiny enuf.
Thanks Richard, glad u like da changgih lights.Took a few tries to get them right, also they need to be trimmed with a sharp blade.Yes its Revell, was released in 2008.Details are a bit soft in certain areas, track detail a bit suspect but overall a good kit.
Jason, lenses will be scribed out from a circular template, or punched out using a punch n die set.

machia Zaidi, H&A mud looks like brown powder.Add a wet brush and apply it like .....like..... well mud.I bought it a long time ago from a hobby shop,I dunno if its still on the market.Mig Productions stuff is similiar I think.
