Title: Pinkfire!

landyshah - March 17, 2009 05:03 PM (GMT)
In between finishing the SPV and starting the Osa, I toyed around with what to build after that....and this came to mind:

Airfix's first "Superkit" from 1970. The shape is spot on, but detail a bit dated. Great potential though....Obtained thru Mr Cyl, he had started building already so some parts have been assembled and painted. I plan to strip it all and rebuild the whole thing. I found an interesting colour scheme compared to the boring old Battle of Britain scheme:

PR Mk 1G, in PR Pink. Will now spend time collecting more references....

Call it forward planning!

wow...1/24 Pinkfire.. looking forward for this..

anyway, what is the tactical advantage of painting this pink?

I think to pair up with the "Pink Panther" landrover :D.

Should have purchased it from Mr Cyl.............

Interesting build...........hope to see it completed..............soon

Once I see your progress might motivate me for my Hurricane to see the light of day !

British and their weirdness....its in the queue Brian, hope to start this soon after SMM09, if my time budgeting is right :P

Info about Pinkfires HERE - also explains why pink was chosen....

A very nice build HERE with good info on how to handle the paint job. Tamiya Hull Red + White = Pink, and pre-shade with RED!

rtfoe - March 18, 2009 03:14 AM (GMT)
  Wierred but nice choice. Short of seeing pink elephants fly.

I think whats going to stand out is the weathering and at 1/24 is going to be huge.

Unique and different.

Richard.

Thinking ahead, anyone got some info on new and easy ways to strip paint? Its mixture of well cured, thick brush painted enamel and acrylic....

I havent done this in a long time....

mr b - April 9, 2009 12:51 PM (GMT)
dot 3 or break fluid rendam n brush off then hot water soap wash

clean n new

Roger TK Brian....looks like the easier, less toxic way apart from the oven cleaner stuff

mr b - April 9, 2009 02:35 PM (GMT)
shah i would not say the less toxic..........its still highly filled with chemicals yr hands will have a tingle light burning senseation if prlonged exposure

Shah, if you look in my 1/24 Junkers thread (novel tak siap bak kata Major... ), you can see that I strip the paint on the plane using brake oil... It is very easy, just dip it in and use an old toothbrush (unused ones lah) to brush off all the paints, but do wear gloves when handling it.

The brake oil can make some plastics a bit brittle but it does not affect the Junkers plastic at all.

landyshah - April 19, 2009 04:06 PM (GMT)
OK, Osa done..so can start on this bird...

1. Open the box and not a pretty sight. Parts all loose and scattered. Made me wonder what am i doing  Not many parts in this kit, about 180. Hope its all there?

2. Some stuff already assembled and hand painted...will need to strip and rebuild. The Merlin engine and cockpit can be further detailed

3. Just to see the size..shes big and really a beautiful shape...

4. During the horrible work of stripping paint...took me almost 2 hours! Donot know why the Dot 3 brake fluid had no effect at all!! (anyone can explain why?)
In the end used a brush cleaner fluid I had which worked. So many thick layers to remove

5. Most of the paint could come off...except for some green...no idea why...but not visible once assembled

6. References ready at hand...

nice! I always enjoy a strip show.

rtfoe - April 20, 2009 03:47 AM (GMT)
Great plane.

I built one before I knew how to fill cracks and sand. Remember it was a heavy kit. So make sure the wings are glued down and supported to get the right dehydral.

Do you still have the motor that comes with the kit?

Richard.

landyshah - April 20, 2009 04:51 AM (GMT)
Yes, this was one wet and sticky strip show :P

Thanks for the tip Richard....but no motor in this kit, I guess since its a later re-release (early 90's?) they left it out. I would think in the early 70's generation release got la......come to think of it, this mould is only one year older than me !!!

I would think any normal FA-130 motor can fit....and you can wire it up with the batteries hidden in the stand. Ah, 70's "working features"....king of this was Monogram

rtfoe - April 20, 2009 04:58 AM (GMT)
  I think also the undercarraige works for this as well.

Richard.

Wahhh good luck with the stripping job shah

I mean the kit tau not you akakakak

Bud Bilko - April 20, 2009 12:47 PM (GMT)
Pink.....i like :D :P

Uncle Sarge.

landyshah - April 23, 2009 08:32 AM (GMT)
OK boys, stripping is over. Naked already. Some early progress...

1. Merlin engine cleaned up as much as possible, then some linkages, hoses and wiring will be fitted. Seen here dry fit in fuselage half to get all the layout logic and alignment sorted
user posted image

2. The kit control column is missing! So had to make up one from wire and card. Aiyo hope dont find more parts missing....
user posted image

Not much so far....but gotta get going on this one!

hashaney - April 23, 2009 08:47 AM (GMT)
Shah, it look like the engine rocker cover a bit warping, is it so? Or you just dry fit it...

mej®

landyshah - April 23, 2009 09:03 AM (GMT)
Mejar, you are right. Looks straight in reference...

OK, kena kopak and re-do. This one already stuck by the previous owner.

landyshah - April 24, 2009 12:32 AM (GMT)
Spent last night re-doing the rocker covers as pointed out by Mejar.

They had been stuck on....backwards!! No wonder the "sit" was not right.

So a lot of careful cutting to get them off, and the sand and re-fit:

Looks terrible, I hope a coat of paint will improve things.

Building old kits is one thing, building second hand old kits is another planet completely! And this is just the engine!!

azlandiver - April 24, 2009 03:02 AM (GMT)
waaa shah....punye kuat ko sand sampai dah takde rupa enjin ni :D

good luck bro....i know you need one ;)

landyshah - April 24, 2009 03:19 AM (GMT)
Detail ada lagi, dont worrieeee....just the photo overexpose at the top so looks all white. The word ROLLS ROYCE on the rocker cover kena maintain, very important!

Look like s**t huh? Nasib aku asyik bikin model jenis macam ni

hashaney - April 24, 2009 04:01 AM (GMT)
Shah> kira OK le tu, kalau bukan hang yang nak buat, siapa lagi? Takde orang lain yang BERANI macam u. Kira orait pe nasib tu... :D

Orang lain kire tak bernasib baik kerna tak dapat pengalaman mcm u...

mej®

PS: Tu yang buat pengalaman kite lebih dari org lain beb... Truskan...

landyshah - April 24, 2009 08:03 AM (GMT)
Mejar: haha, wouldnt say berani la, just trying to make my modelling life more "interesting", bak kata Sir Winston:

"We shall go on to the end, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender..."

And we will NEVER SURRENDER on our modelling desks! Tu diah!

Bud Bilko - April 24, 2009 09:45 AM (GMT)
Aik... macam penah dengaq ja.... Lawan tetap Lawan.... :D :D :P

Sgt Buds, Six Zero out!!

landyshah - April 25, 2009 04:37 PM (GMT)
A bit of progress today.

Merlin given base coat of semi gloss back, then details picked out and oil wash with Umber.
user posted image

Lan: Details and ROLLS ROYCE masih adaaaa

Let it dry before further highlighting/weathering and also more wires/hoses to add

Detail sharpness is nowhere near what you can get from Trumpy or Tamigawa, but its a second hand 40 year old mould....I'm happy anyway!

azlandiver - April 25, 2009 04:58 PM (GMT)
mak aihhh....aku ingatkan tadi enjin betol :D

memang cantik ko buat.....GAYA.....MUTU.....KEUNGGULAN B)

hashaney - April 26, 2009 02:50 AM (GMT)
It remind me of the Ferret scout car engine with the same name at the rocker cover...

Great recovery work Shah... :D

Tonight update, wont be able to build for the rest of the week as I have to go outstation:

1. Merlin just about finished, ready to mount... left the finish bit rough, as it is a cast iron engine, but not too dirty or oily....good to hide all the problem areas :D
user posted image
user posted image

2. Assembled the lower and upper wings, test fit to fuselage. Will be mounted as one unit to get the right dihedral. Landing gear strut also fitted, otherwise cant go in later due to retracting mechanism......Fit is pretty good for such an old kit. Interior of engine bay and cockpit sprayed grey-green
user posted image

3. This is a measure of the size...quite a big bird! I love small planes in big scale.
user posted image

4. Various component in grey-green. So few parts in this kit ...compare to a Trumpy!

After some delay, back to work on this build....I gave up on waiting for the lost PE, want to get going and get on the Perkasa...so went about doing some scratch work and make the best of things

Built up the cockpit and interior and cemented in place. taking care to line up within the two fuselage halves. With the loss of the PE in the post, I made up the seat belts from masking tape and wire. More detail will be added eg throttle quadrant, control cables, wiring etc..and also weathering. Fit is actually quite good.

user posted image

Instrument panel cleaned up, painted and drybrushed. Used back the original airfix parts due to missing PE placards i ordered  Lots of repair work here as the originals were a mess....

PS: Kesian jugak dengaq citer PE u tu hilang...

landyshah - May 10, 2009 10:00 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys for my simple efforts

Anyway, here is some update of this afternoon work. More detail added to cockpit section left and right side, incl hoses, rudder control rod, elevator control cables, fuse box, oxygen regulator, map case, throttle/pitch/mixture lever, extinguisher etc....also, cut hole in fuselage for camera window, and made a representation of camera unit and lenses....

Some paint touch up to do with brush, and blend in colours, then some scuffing/chipping before install engine

The advantage of modelling Spitfire is that so many reference on web, easy to find...and in 1/24 far easier to scratchbuild. Plus, detail you would not dream of (elevator cable!!) can be included....This is why i love small plane in big scale :D

Nice work fren

Just a casual observation........the ring on the control stick a bit besar........picked up from Bud............maybe you will motivate me to start on of these big fellows.......

Nice work all around
