Title: Dragon Pz.kpfw.i Ausf.a
Description: with interior

ahhow - February 6, 2009 01:17 AM (GMT)
It was 1 year ago since the last time i build a new kits, my hands felt itchy already, so i started this little project during CNY holidays. Because it's small and easy to transport when i shift to new place this year.

Everthing went smooth, i finished the front road wheels in couple of hours, quite a lot of molding seam lines to be clean.

Then the nightmare begins... <_<

I try to finds the lost part everywhere, inside the box, other kits box, my room... at last i have to admit that this is the Dragon QC problem which many ppl out there discussed about, i have no mood already and clean up everything.

This is the second time i bought Dragon products with missing parts. The first one is my Shilka.

kuman - February 6, 2009 01:20 AM (GMT)
err.... can ask them for a replacement sprue tree? since a lot of people experienced this already...

After one night of thinking, i don't want to waste this kits, i decided to scratch built this part.

the most material i used is 0.3mm pla plate. Bolts are cut from unwanted Stuart's part.
And this is the finished one, so ugly
user posted image

I still not notice that this is the begining of another nightmare...

PoohBear - February 6, 2009 01:33 AM (GMT)
The scratch part looks alright.

Maybe consider casting as another option.

cheers

Thanks, i know they have this service. But i already opened the plastic bag, i read somewhere they don't serve this kind of situation.

Haha, i don't know how to cast :D

PoohBear - February 6, 2009 02:10 AM (GMT)
Shouldn't be difficult going by what a first time caster posted recently. Not that I know anything about the process, ya. ^_^

Anyway, it might be worth paying multifilla a visit.

How,
very strange that you have that missing part problem. I have never encountered it before with any of my Dragon kits.....

Anyway, i tried to cast it with A+B bondite before i scratch built it, but this part is too complex, i failed. :P

I still not been to multifilla, i know it's a place to spend money... don't wanna go. :D

Actually this is not a new issue, many of the foreign forumers complained about this problem.
I have less than 10 dragon products, and i already encounter this twice, what an unlucky guy...

ahhow - February 6, 2009 04:49 AM (GMT)
Continue with the progress.

When i proceed with the other side of the rear road wheels, i found that i build the wrong side, this part actually included in the box............... What the ****, why so careless? Have to redo <_<
I cleaned the wrong one and remade it to the other side, broke this and that, spend so much time...
This is the amended one, i think i made it better than the first one.

Finally fits to the correct position.

Hopes this will look better after weathering.

 yup..extra part=yes..missing part=no..as long you did not bought it from e-bay :(

Silantra - February 6, 2009 04:35 PM (GMT)
nice work on the missing parts ahhow... it's a noble effort to me [comparing with asking an e xtra parts in every forums or buy another kit just to replace the missing parts...] huhuh

keep it up..u know i love panzer 1s

btw, i never faced this kind of problems... and i'm not so sure if dragon replace missing parts..at least not in our region...

keep it up bro

ahhow - February 7, 2009 03:07 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys, continue with the progress.

The interior of this Panzer 1 is quite simplified, not much detail. Actually i read comparison review before i buy this kits, Tristar's Panzer 1 is my first choice, i think it is the best Panzer 1 for OOTB in the market, but i can't get it in local model shop.

Back to this Dragon's Panzer 1, the anti-skid pattern on the floor plate not present at all, gear box (i guess?) too simplifeid, not rivet at both side of the walls, and many other missing details. The batteries (i guess?) beside the gear box has different look compare to instruction sheet, refer to the instruction sheet, i added straps with masking tape.
The steel plate under the turret some what unreasonable if follow the instruction, i shorten it so that it will not stand on the openable (i mean in real tank) floor plate.
I wish to add anti-skid pattern too, but just can't find suitable material, so just leave it.

user posted image

Even if simplified, it still look nice, actually not much can be seen after assembly.

ahhow - February 7, 2009 04:22 AM (GMT)
The way of assembly the side armour is so stupid, separated inner wall and outer walls to be glue together, this make the side armour around side door look over scale. If the side door is closed then u will not notice the thickness, but i want it to opened, so have to modify.

To do this, i removes parts of the inner wall and remains the other.
user posted image

After sanding jobs and assembled, i think it look better.
user posted image

Dash board not provided, i made a simple ugly one.
user posted image

Assembling those clear parts of "window" (donno how to call that) is another nightmare. Some of the "window" made from 4 tiny clear parts, but actually only 1 part need to mold in clear plastic. Clear plastic is so fragile that i broke one of the parts, i have to modify unused parts and make it into closed position. Thats the only closed openable "window"... The clear parts also so hard to definate the assemble point, even i used 8X magnifying glass also can't see it clearly. After i made 2 of them, i decides to spray a coat of primer to make my jobs easier, but too bad my primer almost empty, it still tooks me so much time before i done.

The PE rack of the radio looks nice and so detail, but that's just the look. It was sooooooooo hard to bend, maybe it's my skill and i don't have PE tool. But i saw a foreign master-class modeller build log with the same kits, his radio rack not perfectly bend either... My god, dragon never try their PE before???

bos..the missing parts looks like its been neatly cut off..i dont think the moulding process is at fault.
so its better to check before buying..see if everthing is in place, the model shop wouldnt mind if one checks before buying. better to be fussy than sorry later

In jakarta many modelers had the bad luck of buying model kits with missing parts...Stolen in mose cases.
and i do agreed with modelshops that seal the boxes...just take it to the counter if you wanna take a peek inside..its best for everyone.

Good job on the scratch build parts bos

Thanks boss.

Yup, i did check everytime before buying, just make sure all sprues, PE parts, tracks, etc are included. But i never bother to see if all parts are in place, how much time i have to spend if i do so? Some parts are tiny

ahhow - February 11, 2009 12:40 AM (GMT)
Another accident

While i was working on other parts, suddently i found a big drop of super glue which already half dry on the roof of driving compartment. No time for photographing, clean it immediately. Unfortunately, it was too late...

Luckily, those area will be cover by opened side door and turret. <_<

chief, the rubber barrel looks a wee bit off center. Might want to realign or replace with brass rod.

Thanks, your comment are most appreciate.

It's consider ok for me since this photo shows 3~4 times larger than the real one, but the main reason is --- I don't have brass rod ^_^

These rubber barrel really hard to handle and took me so much time...

Please feel free to give more oppinion. :)

If i fail, just forget about it... :D

ahhow - February 24, 2009 01:00 AM (GMT)
Simple tools clamps made from aluminium tin can and paper. Not so nice but i think they look better than original one.

:D waaaaa..a lot of progress..aaaa..hand painted or airbrush AH?..love ur interior painting..keep up a good job..cant wait for the finish product :D

1 thing I want to ask and I saw this things from another forum..those shovel..cangkul..tukul besi and bla..bla..you glue it to the tank and sptay the whole tank or put it after you spray the whole tank?..same with the track?

rtfoe - March 2, 2009 04:27 AM (GMT)
Nice one Ahhow,

You put us Airbrush painters to shame :P

Sometimes I switch to handpainting as well to save time and cleaning of the airbrush. Masking is also troublesome unless I use Blu-tac or silly putty.

Keep up the good work.

Richard

ahhow - March 2, 2009 05:57 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys.

Landyshah: I always brush painted the base color of all parts, and weathering by mix media. For this kits, i wash and create color variation by poster color and pastel, paint chipping by brush and different color pencil.

Blackheart: I think it depend on habit and the situation. Some modeller paint these parts separately becoz their clamps are workable, they can easily clip them after paint. My DIY clamps are lousy one and not working, so have to glued before paint. But as you can see, i still left fire extinguisher, jack and plier separately, they are not easy to paint if i glue them first. For the tracks, i always paint them separately. ^_^
