Title: Soviet Gb - Racun
Description: The Incredible Vanishing Boat
landyshah - February 3, 2009 11:23 AM (GMT)
As I have naively registered for the Soviet GB for a Osa Class missile boat, the moment I got home I pulled out the kit I was falsely confident in going to use for it (courtesy of racun from RMC Boy, thanks bro, you really got me royally screwed for this one :P )
My first ever Kitech-Zhengdefu kit (Balakong mari?) - RM 14.90 from MH sale !!! Optimistic or what...33cm scale ?? Works out to be 1/125. You can imagine the quality of the mouldings :o

Thinking it was a straight build, but oh no, its not. The Hela class is a copy of the Osa, but with different weapons, radar and other details. So, have to mod it back to Soviet Navy fit/colours/markings to qualify for the GB.
Ah, a ship conversion......
For your entertainment, here are some of the instructions and so forth:

Vaselone and Vanishing cream, I'm sure we could all use this sometimes. Will write to Kitech and ask where to order. Balakong maybe?

To convert it into this:

Just thot I'd share with you guys....will be thinking about it while i finish the choochoo train project. And its some serious thinking for my interlligence and personal enjoyment
koowilliams - February 3, 2009 11:43 AM (GMT)
ship looks sci-fi....!!!!
VANISHING CREAM... the chinese sure is advance in stealth technology and easily available too... the western tech really have to work trice or tenth times as hard....
landyshah - February 3, 2009 11:46 AM (GMT)
This class of boat was introduced in early 60's can you believe it. Used in a number of wars including 6 day war, indo-pakistan war, iran-iraq etc
Yes, looks like they already got stealth technology and cloaking device man! Using cream only!! What is the US and Klingons doing la....must follow China! LOL
Mods can you change this thread topic to : THE INCREDIBLE VANISHING BOAT :D
koowilliams - February 3, 2009 12:01 PM (GMT)
in the 60s!!!??? man...!! that bulging thing looks like something to keep a robot waiting to be launch...
I keep imagining the chinese soldier will infiltrate hostile ground and disable or hack all enemy military network undetected by wearing nothing else than a layer of VANISHING CREAM... just don't fall into water...
landyshah - February 3, 2009 05:57 PM (GMT)
Soviet technology for you....each of those 4 boxes held a SS-N-2 Styx missile. Huge bloody thing weighing 2 ton each. The Komar class before the Osa was the earliest fast missile boat, they invented it. These Russians, way ahead in some things, and horribly behind in others.
This Osa class is one of my favourite boats, didnt know it was kitted until I saw this in MH, and at RM 14.90 you cant say no :D ..but you get what you pay for la
Turning a sows ear into a silk purse, or vanish in the process?
landyshah - February 4, 2009 10:27 AM (GMT)
If any boat people are interested, here's more info on the Osa class:
Service entry: 1961
Production: more than 400 and exported to all Sovert bloc
Soviet navy production:
Displacement: 172 tons standard, 210 tons full load
Length: 37.5 m
Beam: 7.64 m
Draught: 3.8 m
Propulsion: 3× diesels, 12,500 hp
Speed: 38 knots
Range: 500 nm at 35 knots
Crew: 26 / 28
Armament: 2× AK-230 30 mm/65
1× SA-N-5 SAM (1x4) MANPAD air defence missiles (Osa II)
4× SS-N-2A Styx
The difference between the Osa and the Chinese Hela :
1. Soviets use automatic AK-230 30mm twin mount guns fore and aft, chinese use twin manual mounts:

2. Drum Tilt radar on rear pylon (not fitted on Chinese)

3. Different radar/sensors on front mast
4. Reddish oxide or olive greeny colour deck, grey/black hull with white plimsoll line
Still finding more references, but dont you just love the shape:
RMCBoy - February 7, 2009 11:30 AM (GMT)
Wahhh! My racun-ing is quite potent huh?
Bud Bilko - February 8, 2009 02:30 PM (GMT)
Waaa...
Very vanishing look indeed!! Landy, with your interlligence, this will not post you with issues since this kit is fit for do-it-self :D !!
Uncle Sarge.
f-4dablemodels - February 13, 2009 01:19 AM (GMT)
landyshah,
If any parts go missing during construction, it is probably because you used too much vanishing cream.
Cannot say it was swallowed by carpet monster.
landyshah - February 13, 2009 04:09 PM (GMT)
Yes Jason, will have to be careful with the cream.....after the whole kit might vanish..then again, maybe a good thing oso :D
rtfoe - March 2, 2009 01:43 AM (GMT)
Shah,
I found the bubble pack with the dome shape that you require. Around the 5sen size and there is a dozen to a strip.
The dome is uniform in shape but judging by you boat turret shape, it seems flattened at the top. Boleh pakai ah?
Will forward pix after wife has returned my camera.
Richard.
landyshah - March 2, 2009 04:02 AM (GMT)
Thanks man. I havent really thought in detail about this build yet...just noted i needed domes for the guns, and one for the rear radar.
Lets see how, if yours can pakai..maybe can get away with it in this small scale, dunno. Take your time with the pics, no rush
landyshah - March 16, 2009 02:52 PM (GMT)
Some recent miraculous development on this project.
Went over to MH for the last day "closing down for now" sale, and wonder of wonders, found this:

Utility Missile Boat!! RM 21.90! Same scale!! OK, whats a utility missile boat? Can carry sayur also ka? Nevermind, it had these:
AK230 gun mounts!!!

Drum tilt radar pylon (still need to build the radar tho):

Now dont need to scratchbuild so much, even tho Richard was so kind to pass me the pill packets. And i picked up another Hela class as well for future use...hmmm...Indian Navy Operation Trident in Indo-Pak war? Syrian Navy in Battle of Latakia during Six Day War? Iraqi Navy in Iran-Iraq war? Lots of possibilities :D
Also picked this up : Chinese PLA Navy New Patrol Boat Stioned in HK   !! Very early Trumpeter kit. RM 21.90!!

Fascinating...this one has canggih twin shaft drive with gearbox. But again, it has another two AK230 turrets for the second Osa. The rest of the kit I think will masuk spare part tong.

Anyway, now the Osa can come to life for Soviet GB once the SPV is finished, and another for the future :D
Silantra - March 21, 2009 02:36 PM (GMT)
err how come i missed this interesting vanishing cream thread.... got me laughing alone that my wife suspected i was online chatting with chicks.... huhuhuhuh
anyway, love to see the progress so fat in getting a few more cheap vessels.... i just hope this one wont vanish in time...
keep it up shah..ko memang superhuman
landyshah - March 21, 2009 02:47 PM (GMT)
Ok, its a Saturday night, back from a good makan and time to have a look at the vanishing boat....
1. If you can make it out, these are supposed to be propellers. Um yeah ok right

2. Details quite kasar and simplified..solid bridge windows and anchor chain for example

3. Perarakan bot bot....various hulls from the kits which will be cannibalised.

4. Some of the pics printed and rough sketches I made for quick ref:

Oh well, start bikin lah....
Haha, Sil baru nampak ko nyer posting.....eh mana boleh vanish. kalo start bikin mau kasi habis :D
Silantra - March 21, 2009 02:53 PM (GMT)
shah, aku dah lama vanished or banished. Must be the cream they sold in 7 eleven... huhuh..
that's propellers ke flowers??
landyshah - March 21, 2009 02:58 PM (GMT)
Eh mana bole tadak mood ?
Lu mau kena racun session. Mcm mat selam and Mat RMC ke psiko kau kau....ask Imran he shud know. U come to the AGM tmrw i look for you HAHA
Silantra - March 21, 2009 03:38 PM (GMT)
racun membeli slalu kena. Buying kits is the only mood that still keep me in this hobby. I would love to attend agm but something came up n i got to be in malacca esok. Next time bro
landyshah - March 21, 2009 06:00 PM (GMT)
Bro Sil, from your words mcm u having "down time" in modelling.
Chill man. Happen to everyone...thats for certain. Would just like to share some words from my experience.
For me, racun membeli tu no meaning, mana mana leh dengar.....tak berbaloi la....beli tu memang senang, only money what and talk is cheap. Jadi pengutip kotak sambil syiok sendiri tengok stash la gamaknya. Nothing wrong with that, but accept that your main interest is a kit collector (not builder) and you accept having no or very low output. If u ok with that and happy, then by all means man....its a free world.
We all love to buy stuff, it makes us feel good instantly compared to working on a build for months.....for many people, this is how the hobby becomes to them (even like u said). No time, no mood etc, but still nak try maintain tempias modelling...so, easiest way out is buy and buy lah...its always hard when we have so many other things that need commitment. I know, Ive been there. So then its about how to make this hobby the best it can be within those limitations....
If you ask me, racun yg ada meaning which is looking at what kits we have, and thinking of interesting projects to do with them, then sharing research, parts etc...and doin it..baru syiok. Thats a reason you notice why I prefer to build the older/weirder kits even tho ader modern release, more repair and planning to do which appeal to me...sure, the result aint gonna match the latest Tamigawa, but whats more important is I enjoyed working on it.
But its a choice which way you wanna go...no wrong or rite. Kita buat ni nak lapangkan hati, bukan nak susah hati ker carik makan (lain dari Bro Naza who is professional builder) So bila kita start to tension about our "hobby to relax" its time to relook what we are doing. WTH nak tension about the thing which we do to run away from daily stress......
For something like 30 years ( ) i was solo modeller, never mix around with others or knew of this forum or society. Semua motivasi sendiri cari punya, I guess I made my own "philosophy" to keep myself in the hobby, no racun available from others only my own internal one. Tu pasal, I learnt a lot of stuff the hard way, and took so long to learn even basic skills. Hentam sini hentam sana......And I think to this day there is a million miles more for me to improve.
Its quite common for people where modelling can be one of those thing which hangat few years, pastu tukar benda lain - mcm main DSLR, hifi, kereta etc....aku pun heran camner 30 tahun pun aku still interested.
Few years back I really felt out of touch with the hobby....stok banyak tapi bikin kureng. And it stress me out. I knew its a choice if I wanted to go back into it, or abandon or just buy and know I would hardly build. Once I made the choice to get back into it, then I knew I gotta get back into the mood. What I did that time is choose something I wanted to build and do it sampai habis. Those setengah jalan kits yg duduk atas meja tu, taroh masuk kotak or scrap, tutup cerita. Yang dah takde mood nak buat dalam stash, jual jer. Some ppl here may know of my "sales" dulu. Tapi simpan buat aper? There is a saying : When there is only hope, there is no hope :P
Another thing, if you notice I only work on one kit at a time but plan ahead for 1-2 others, and been doin that all my modelling life. Kalau gua, more than one, berserabut, otak jam....tension bila no progress. Its like having many Gf :P I really respect those who can do few at one time and finish them well. Really sifu to me.
For me, i found that if I wanted to build and get results, need some discipline. Sorta like project management haha. Tu pasal since aku jumpa forum nih, rajin post build even tho my work is nothing great...but more cos it helps my discipline and learning a lot for each project. I found that I enjoyed building more if I applied discipline, lagi senang/puas/lapang hati. Weird but true. It may work for some, but not others of cos....depend on the individual.
For sure there will be up and down, and sometime i too lack the motivation and mood, and there will be a time aku pun malas nak post dah...we are human only, not robots/gundam/mech/Ma.K :P
But hey, thats me. Everyone is different, the whole point is I do hope you find your feet on the direction you choose....but really, I hope you choose to build so we can see your wonderful work coming to life. Kalo nak tayang kotak requires no skill, and you got the talent to do better than that bro :D
Sorry citer panjang...jadi diversion modelling psychology pulak lol
Silantra - March 22, 2009 03:11 AM (GMT)
shah, that's so lengthy ....huahahahahaha....
i oso want to write that long but need to rush...
i guessed, i'm my own enemy right now.....
i love this hobby as much i love sex.... but something in the way that made me loose my mood...it happen several times during..... dont u worry bro.... the mood will emerge soon.... i just need a trigger point... perhaps hanging out with u will do it....
i knew that u guys missed my crappy work, but u guys have to wait further....until the time came, i will show some progress work of mine...
to make some correction, i dont feel tense or hatred towards this hobby.... i just need a time on my own to start back something i should have done years ago....
ahh...dah panjang ni...ok la bro..need to start the engine and head south to my kampung.....
Loo CK - March 22, 2009 12:20 PM (GMT)
Brother,
Getting into a rut happens to all of us. Sometimes the 'pressure' of completing a kit takes the fun out of it but sure enough after each build comes a sense of 'completion'
I don't think I have to wait too long to see your next project in these forum pages. Some people just cannot stay away. heck, you might just spring surprises and start doing cars!

Sil, I think with this one statement, you have made my long propaganda lecture redundant. The problem is thus non issue at the fundamental level

But for this one, you just need some modelling viagra :D
Come, there is plenty stock of that around :P
Bomber Vince - March 22, 2009 05:36 PM (GMT)
Shah,
Bit off topic already but who cares? the owner also off topic bit liao....
Ur "karangan" really inspired me, I have mostly the same thought as u but I think I'm the one that have multiple awek's..hehe..(kits ler). I think u are right, I have HM at home, but some times I do need friends to fill up my "emptiness" not only girls but guys also help me up. (hey, I'm still straight)
Just like when I'm building a kit, some time I need to do something else while waiting for the next step. eg, waiting for the paint to dry. That's why I build multiple at a time.
Another reason is that, (for example) when I loose interest of Mandy, I will go to Claire, but after some times, I found that I would like to talk to Sandy which I have not seen for quite some time......darn, what the heck that I'm talkin...
but those are for casual building only
I like to be in the society, trying my best to participate in all the events, what ever I promised, I will sure build it, no matter how. That's why an armour modeller like me ended up like an aircraft modeller last year.
No, for those who know, I might be an automobile modeller this year
Happy modelling

landyshah - March 23, 2009 03:25 AM (GMT)
Silantra statement about *** + Mandy and Claire and Sandy, maybe all at the same time somemore :P
I like! Very good way of looking at things. If we are thinking this way, there is no worry about going off this hobby!!!
End of the day we have similarities and we have differences in style and approach, I think its really great, how boring it wud be if we are all the same. Otherwise we wud argue about how many rivets on the S-Boat and how many milimeter difference on Sukhoi undercarriage. Its much more fun to talk about builds as a whole, the adventure we go through and not about just technicality.
I think all of us are dedicated, otherwise we wont be here on this forum talking long karangan and discussing this. Its a great moral support I think, even when we face so many challenge in our daily life.
druid_99 - March 23, 2009 03:53 AM (GMT)
Good writing there bro, makes me think and look back at all my pending/half-built model kits... maybe it's time for me to stop buying (other then Ferraris  ) and start building lah... (I think I've been saying this for the last few years... hahaha).
Back to topic... any progress on this build? Maybe you can build this according to a few of the modellers here where you can treat each part as an individual model itself before finally assembling it into a masterpiece. I've tried it (again, incomplete build... the Junkers) and it actually helps and it makes your overall builds looks so much better.
Just my five cents. :D
cptan - March 23, 2009 04:03 AM (GMT)
Well said, Landy!!
That proof we're not alone thus having the same racun :D....

landyshah - March 23, 2009 04:08 AM (GMT)
Imran, we are like women la (no offence to Becky and Wendy)...we love shopping too!! Tak boleh larii
Your suggestion is correct. For ships, building sub-assembly and painting each is usual practice. This is because it usually become impossible to paint once many parts are attached. Very different from AFV or aircraft where we try to assemble as much as possible but definitely, the idea can be applied where possible.
For this Osa, the cabin etc is grey, but the deck is reddish and the hull grey again...banyak kaler....i would build up the cabin sections, mast, missiles etc as individually painted and detailed components, paint the deck separately, then attach. After that, more details added and blended in.
Its a different logic from other types of kits simply cos so many tiny little parts and bits when get "buried" under others.

landyshah - March 23, 2009 01:50 PM (GMT)
Thanks all for the thoughtful comments...end of the day, we should enjoy our hobby..nuff said, less talking and more building :D
Back to the build:
1. Cleaned up the props...still can do a bit more but got bored so left it aside to finish later. Its quite tricky to file/sand and still maintain each blade's curving shape and size...

2. At the stern, had to cut away the "clips" that hold the deck on (for changing batteries when motorised). Look at the rear line on the deck and you can see the quality of the mouldings....a lot of cleaning and filling up to do here

3. Overall size...its actually quite small if you compare to the maroon box...

The plastic is very one kind wan..hard but "dry"...if you sand it there is so much fine dust almost like sanding resin...weird
landyshah - March 25, 2009 11:43 AM (GMT)
Some updates:
1. Deck and hull cleaned up of flash and bad mouldings. Then filled in the holes for the motorised switch and rear "clips", need to sand them down

2. Superstructure built up. Drilled out the bridge windows. Will add transparency later. More cleaning and removal of many sink marks and mould release circles yet to do

3. Still cleaning up the missile launchers. Very bad fit here too, and L-R halves are deformed, cant get them to line up. Much sanding and filling to do

4. The tiny size of the instruction sheet is making my eyes suffer. This is how it looks at normal viewing. I have resorted to using magnifying glass...ayoyo

BV, you are not alone! I am in the same boat with your Blue Devil now !! :D
Bomber Vince - March 25, 2009 12:00 PM (GMT)
