Title: Achtung! Schnell Schell!
landyshah - January 19, 2009 01:28 PM (GMT)
So is it called an E Boat or an S Boot?
Well, the English called them E boats, E =Enemy. The Germans called em Schnell (fast) boats, so I suppose the right thing would be to follow the Germans who actually built them. They are regarded as the best fast patrol boats of WW II, with high speed, long range and great sea keeping. Most served in the North Sea / Baltic areas and were a constant threat to the Allies, whipped the a** of the Brit Vospers anytime.
Whatever it is, the Revell 1/72 kit is different from the ancient Airfix offering (which represents a earlier S38 class) . The Revell kit is for the S-100 class, which came into service in 1943 and incorporated an armoured cabin ("kalotte") for the bridge. Triple supercharged V 12 Mercedes engines giving a total of 7500 hp for a top speed of up to 48 knots. Carried torpedoes and late in the war fitted with Flak 38 in quad mount.
From what Ive researched the kit is generally correct with small innacuracies here and there, easily rectified. I will build this OOB, with some scratchbuilt extras as usual.
OK, enough of sejarah. This is how it looks with the Maroon box to scale:

I'm looking forward to this one, should be fun! Small practice before I get a 1/35? :P
RMCBoy - January 19, 2009 01:35 PM (GMT)
Gesundheit!
Its a German 'Sweet' Boat!
Should be a 'schnell' build....
landyshah - January 19, 2009 01:38 PM (GMT)
Was ist das Herr Kapitan?
Unter schnellbooten wis flakvierling.
Gott in Himmel! Die Englander verboten!

Ahoy there Shah!
Will be looking into this here thread closely... ar ar :D
Sharing two pics of me S-Boot thar...

Even the Aifix boat was enjoyable to build.
Richard.

ftfoe ;) sooo yours the 1 that at the minicom 2008 last year..just wondering what u use for duplicate the water..plaster of paris?
landyshah good luck on ur latest project..keep it update :D
landyshah - January 20, 2009 03:50 AM (GMT)
Gorgeous build on the old Airfix kit Richard. I've seen that in MH and was admiring it.
Its a lot more fun to me to build small boats in big scale, and not the other way around!
If I can get distantly near your quality of work, Ill be a happy man!
azlandiver - January 20, 2009 06:58 AM (GMT)
wahhh brader shah.....teruja kejap la tengok walau pun baru pasang ape nama panggil tu yang kat bawah....hull ke? ehehehehe sorry ler tak tau :P
keep us coming bro with your build :) :)
landyshah - January 20, 2009 09:24 AM (GMT)
Lan, lower body of the ship is called the hull, the flat part is the deck, top "body" is superstructure, nose is the bow, tail is the stern and bottom under is the keel....
Here is a video i found in youtube about E-b0ats. They are so powerful and fast! Love the torpedo launching part:
here
ari - January 20, 2009 12:27 PM (GMT)
wah bos..u upgrade to LUNGHILL ah, wah action ah, get bonus trus main rokok mahal :P .
for sure this revell kit is going to be better than the airfix one ..in detail i mean. just go slow bos...this boat will look good with plenty of rust.
the 1/35scale one i sudah lihat...so and so only, a bit to the expensive side, and not as big as one would imagine...but it wll surely look good with the Zebra stripe camo.
landyshah - January 20, 2009 02:31 PM (GMT)
LOL I've been Lunghill user for 22 years pak ari haha...kena tukar isap paip la, jadi popeye. Thanks for your tips, yup taking it easy with this one.
Tapi, according to my research, camo on E-Boat is very limited. Most are just in "Schnellbootweiss" or a very light grey. Have a look at
thisProgress for tonight:
Hull and deck assembled. The fit is pretty good, just a bit of sanding and filler needed. Such a pleasure to build after the A-10!! Also built up the armoured cabin:

Bit of extra piping on the torp tubes:

Added detail to the commanders position, make it look more "busy":
ari - January 20, 2009 06:31 PM (GMT)
then you must be gangster la...coz Lunghill samseng punya rokok :D
bos you kasi kasar dikit dia punya surface pasal nanti bikin wash cantik, terus seawater will make nonsense of the paintwork, 2 weeks its all it needed to turn the paint work into rust, thats why kalau you lihat kapal dekat habour semua ada multipile coating of paint..... kalau karat dia cat la, karat lagi dia cat lagi la. cat punya cat last last kepala kapal jadi lain warna, dia punya buntut lain warna.
so you lihat la macam mana mau bikin dia punya karat and shade yg lain lain, soal kalau satu shade aje..nanti model you jadi biasa biasa aje.
and then part yg ada kayu you kasi engrave akar kayu...nanti bikin wash...chun bos
moJimbo - January 20, 2009 11:17 PM (GMT)
be careful on fitting the clear 'windshield'... it has to be bent and difficult to glue down. i know cos' i screwed up on that part :P

hahaha...bos lucky you gave some warning, or else i will aslo screw up if i get one of this kit myself. well, in situation like this i would recommend blowing the windscreen with a hairdryer and slowly shape to fit
landyshah - January 21, 2009 05:02 AM (GMT)
Hairdryer...good idea boss. I will try that when I come to the windscreen part. but where to find hairdryer....?!! Ladies help?
On another note, MH called and they have got a 1/35 S-boot for me!!
kay - January 21, 2009 06:31 AM (GMT)
rtfoe - January 21, 2009 09:38 AM (GMT)
Now I'm gatal also and want to build my Revell one too.
You guys really racun. Actually my two Vosper MTB's are out of the boxes aledi with hulls put together... a stalled project now ignited by this racun.
BTY Shah...for you sup,sup soi to achieve a better level of finish than my S-Boot.
Don't be fooled by the water... it helps the boat look better. :D
Richard.
landyshah - January 21, 2009 11:04 AM (GMT)
Small diversion: Just got the 1/35 version....here is a comparison for scale:

Like Ari said, its big but not THAT big.....I'd say the 1/72 Flower class and U boats are a close fight, and the Gato is bigger..and less than half the price
Is the Italeri 1/35 overpriced? Hard to say, but from the box and cheapo packaging, it doesnt hold up well..
Kay: Great racun, thanks. Im getting the Osprey book soon.
Richard: Aiyo great expectations la friend.....and lets face it, small boats in big scale is the way to go :P Build those vospers man!
ari - January 21, 2009 04:46 PM (GMT)
lu betul betul gila bos :D ....kecil besar lu sapu semua.
yup..just like i said its to the expensive side...what to do , Rm is weak nowdays.
but then ..you could add a lot of stuff on this boat....Dragon's 20mm flak should be a nice addition.
so you dah lihat panel nya?...bagus kan
landyshah - January 21, 2009 05:38 PM (GMT)
Haha kalau gila saja boleh maju dalam dunia ni boss....and yes, the panel detail on the Italeri is very good. It should be at that price!
landyshah - January 25, 2009 09:25 AM (GMT)
Some updates.
Hull and deck primed, ready to paint. Drilled out exhaust and portholes.

Various subassemblies also primed and ready to paint. The guns were very delicate and needed careful assembly:

Scratchbuilt FuMB32 and FuMB34 antenna detection unit from PE, on a mast. Some boats were fitted with this.

Next steps is starting painting. The Schnellbootweiss top colour will have to be mixed, its a unique very light white-grey
Pak Ari, you are right. I found some new info that S-Boot did have zebra type camo. Looks really cool....as you said, on the 1/35 one will look very sexy...hehe sudah gatalll
azlandiver - January 25, 2009 10:10 AM (GMT)
Quite fast build bro, keep 'em coming.....kalau yang 35 tu buat zebra sure mengancam punye la hehehehe
Btw is this going to be inside casing as well?
landyshah - January 25, 2009 06:30 PM (GMT)
Yes Lan, standard la, kapal mesti masuk case punye...and yes, 35 tu confirm but zebra...dah ada reference
CNY eve progress:
Main paint job done...quite simple really...light grey, dark grey, black. Following Pak Ari's idea, I sanded the surfaces a bit rough to give texture - just a bit for this scale.
The S-Boot white is a mix of Tamiya Royal Grey, White and a touch of blue. Deck is royal grey+black, and hull bottom is NATO black. Colour scheme really suits the long slim shape to my eye....Some touch up with brush to do before detail work

38mm quad mount:

Bridge dry fitted:

Gong Xi folks!
ari - January 26, 2009 07:35 AM (GMT)
wah cepat ah lu...bos itu bukan 38mm quad , tapi 20mm Flakvierling 38 bos.
just an idea bos...these guns are fixed only after the boats are finished. the factory colours are repainted over with salt water grade paints..as their standard factory paint finish will not last long at sea...so im sure the shade would be a bit different depending on what paints they have at that time.
if anything should rust, you wont find any rust here, as im sure the crews will pay special attention to it ...guess they hate to find out that the guns are rusted and doesnt work the moment a seafury appears overhead.
soal nya aku pernah liat ada yg bikin Flak nya rusting...salah tuh bos, same case with the torpedos...betul betul bersih, licin dan dikasi minyak polish..mana tau kotor kotor nanti sangkut di tube waktu tembak..mati la di maki maki ama captain :D
landyshah - January 26, 2009 08:53 AM (GMT)
Eh ...sorri typo error, I meant 20mm flak 38...macam mana bole keluar 38mm ...sudah tua! Maybe cos 2.30 am ! Anyway, ini simple paint job, quite fast. Detail painting will take longer la...Good point on the paint difference for the gun.
About ship weathering, I have some opinion, which you and me are in agreement, and can have lots of discussion :P
The sailors will be all the time busy cuci and paint and polish when not in action. Therefore, all the deck fitting will be pretty good condition, and the weapons all will be no rust.
Ada pun rust, will be only in areas which they are less able to reach (like hull side). Paling kuat pun rust streak on some fitting. I dont agree with people buat naval ship semua karat habis. Its never that bad, even in combat. LIke you say, mesti kena tarohh with the captain. A smart looking ship is what everyone aims for. Is a matter of pride and discipline.
Therefore, the crew will be continuously painting, scraping, painting when not in action....and tiap kali balik base after patrol, will be refit and inspected by CO.
But even then, depend on type of boat - those long range/long patrol will be more weathered than short range. This S-Boat is a short range craft....so it will never be as bad as a U-Boat or escort destroyer for example...so you have to think when you are modelling the boat, start or mid or end of patrol...For my previous boats, I tend to build more to the end of patrol, cos the heavier weathering give some character. Then we should consider the hull, which will be full of fungus, and sea parasites which attach there...
One thing I notice, too many modeller do not link the real life with the model. So, it may look like very pretty model, but does it reflect the reality? One very good example is panel line wash on planes...I mean, can you really see those line in real life if the plane is that distance away? No way, and never on modern jet....so, its not at all realistic in my view
Haha, sorry, Philosophy of Weathering!
Loo CK - January 26, 2009 02:38 PM (GMT)
Shah,
another beauty coming along just fine.
I agree with Ari that at times, we tend to follow a painting/weathering process too fanatically that all logic is thrown out of the window. However, at times, for the sake of artistic license to do a good looking piece, logic is sacrificed for art. A fine example is blackened AFV gun muzzle.
Looking forward to the next progress. BTW, why not the zebra scheme????
landyshah - January 26, 2009 03:14 PM (GMT)
Thank you Towkay!
Yes, every finish chosen is a representation of either art in the mind of the modeller, or as accurate a reproduction as possible. Sometimes the two can jive, sometimes not....this is where the individual makes the choice. As you rightly point out, its freedom of expression. As long as the builder is happy, thats all that matters is what I say. Another way of saying I'm less artistically inclined lol
Didnt go Zebra on this one, as I did not have the reference pics to hand when I started. I would think the Zebra scheme requires a lot of pre-planning to do, which I didnt. I think its too risky to try and add in now, would require a repaint.
Anyway, its a commission build, and the owner chose the all-grey scheme since at the time we agreed on it the reference didnt show any zebra schemes...oh well
Nevermind, it will be more fun in 35th! hehe
ari - January 26, 2009 05:00 PM (GMT)
aiya bos bos..artistic or realistic..all same same la, as long enjoy okay la, as long we stay flexiable and respect what other modellers are doing, then everything we do should be fun...
landyshah - January 26, 2009 07:05 PM (GMT)
Betul Pak Ari, Ini kan hobi untuk kita relax. Freedom to do what we like....
Anyway, did some more painting tonight and fitted the deck details. Some basic shading/weathering also applied with light wash, some hints of rust.

Be careful with the instructions, and choose the final version at early stage, cos many of the detail painting depends on it. Also, the instructions are pretty vague when it comes to assembling the guns and fitting the deck stuff....
PoohBear - January 27, 2009 02:21 AM (GMT)
Nice and beautiful!
cheers
landyshah - January 27, 2009 03:19 PM (GMT)
More update as of tonight....I am enjoying working hard on this one! (Edited: put in better pics)
Further deck details added, and more weathering/shading to paintwork and wood using a mixture of wash, drybrush, pastels and airbrush. I added patches of lighter paint to represent areas newly painted by the hardworking Kriegsmarine sailors to keep their boat shipshape as possible in the tough North Sea conditions. Pen for scale.

Added side railings and the canvas spray shields. This was a common fitting on S boots as at high speed the boat threw up a lot of water which would splash on the deck. Therefore, these "dodgers" were fitted the keep the water out. Made from tissue and PVA glue and draped over the railings:

Now left to dry, while I work on the torpedoes and other bits and pieces...
CnC Welcome as usual

wah shah...
a very productive holidays... if we have more of this long holidays you sure can build all your stash in a month with your current rate of prduction
good progress and especially like your Philosophy of Weathering :D
good progress.. need to see more.. :D
kuman
landyshah - January 28, 2009 02:28 AM (GMT)
Haha bro....apa nak buat, tak pegi mana mana for the hols...so lepak at home and build la....
I thought the purpose of keeping a stash is to finish it, and not pile up thousands? Why buy if we dont build ? :P
BTW I updated my earlier post with some better pictures...
landyshah - January 28, 2009 04:53 PM (GMT)
Ini malam cerita....
Final stage weathering and toning. The story line is that the Boot is on a tough patrol on the North Sea, end 1944. Germany was fighting for survival, and every patrol is high risk.
I have left it pretty subtle on the hull, mostly stains from water and rust running off the deck applied with airbrush. Nothing more than this as the heavy action took place on the deck. Some texture from the pre-sanding can be seen, and the canvas screens are all ragged from high speed bashing by winter storms.

Flakvierling...well used from fighting off Coastal Command Beaufighters! No rust as Pak Ari suggested, just well worn with bullet nicks, paint chips, stains and scratches.

Mid deck 20mm, also well used. Life is tough for an S-boot in end-1944

Ammo lockers show suitable signs of heavy use. Rust will occur mostly at the welded joints. Deck paint was sprayed thick to simulate anti-slip coating, dont know how accurate this is, but it adds interest.

"Kalotte" and stabilised binoculars:

Now left rigging, flag, props, windscreen and radar mast. Case ordered.
Thats all for now folks, of course pointers and comments as usual welcome. I believe I still can improve my skills for worn/scratched/chipped paint. Look forward to anyone's valued opinions.
Now my eye is wandering at the pair of Hueys in the stash. All this 'Nam fever.....I LOVE THE SMELL OF NAPALM IN THE MORNING :D
kuman - January 29, 2009 12:08 AM (GMT)
excellent shah.. :D
i just wondering... the canvas-screen on the railing is a must have for the schnell boat?
and how/what do you use to make those?
man.. you're fast... :D
ohh and i found this in one of the earlier thread...
Huey poison...
kuman
ari - January 29, 2009 12:27 AM (GMT)
one mistake bos..but still can repair one.
the rust application you applied all have that Good morning round face look..meaning they spread after drying...especially on the shutters on the brigde.
what you should have done is...to first apply thinner on the surface ...when its all wet..only then you apply the rust or shading ..this way the rust solution will stay in place along the edges and will not spread after drying. this is call the pin wash method
the other way is when your are doing your wash...add in the rust or shading before the wash dries.
the point is the surface must be wet when you apply your detail solution..and since its wet everywhere, the solution has no where to go. unlike dry surface that will encourage the solution to spread..just like a sponge.
...you testing on scrape platic 1st ..and see the differences after drying...di jamin bagus bos.
landyshah - January 29, 2009 02:05 AM (GMT)
Pak Ari, thank you for that good nasihat. I will try tambah thinner at the rust spots to reduce the effect. Actually I did "mandi" the whole surface in thinner masa buat, but maybe not enough or the pin wash colour too "kaw"....
Will take note of this point for future improvement. It really shows up in zoom-in pics, I think I am going blind in my old age, could not see with my naked eye
Kuman: Itu canvas memang fitted on most of the S-Boots I have seen in pics. But it is not compulsary la, ada yang nampak railing..I made them from facial tissue, wet with PVA glue+water, and draped on the railing. When dry, paint and give light wash with some highlighting..using tissue is an old technique
The Huey...WAH !!! Even I try my best, dont think can reach 50% of what that guy did .....
Will do some research what version to make, I dont like those one with the guns on the nose, spoils the shape I think...I like em' "Slick" (Hueys I mean, not something else :P )
landyshah - January 29, 2009 02:28 PM (GMT)
Pretty much finished!
Just left to do up the stand, flag, touch up the white glue marks for windscreen and slot into glass case. Following Pak Ari's pointer, I improved the rust stains so that the "goodmorning" :D faces are minimised...ok ka pak ari?

And following Sarjan Bilko punya nasihat, used a white sheet as background with proper lighting. Why didnt I do this earlier?

Bow 20mm mount:

Windscreen involved some careful cutting and bending, but managed to work it out - attached with trusty old white PVA glue. Did not use the thread supplied in the kit for rigging as it is too thick for radio antenna, so used some from my trusty "rigging" kain:

Overall this is an excellent little kit that is very enjoyable to build. Anyone who has one, give it a shot!
Thank you everyone who looked through this build.
Whats next?
ari - January 29, 2009 02:40 PM (GMT)
ah like this okay..bagus..wait for it to dry completely..then pukul with some light pastel...lightly brush on the rusted area..then tiup the remaining pastel...mesti chun bos.
another way is to use eraser.. i mean rubber la..just gently rub the border of the rusted area...just a little onli bos
the point is to get it to blend in with the white....orang puteh juga kalah kalau ini :D
azlandiver - January 29, 2009 02:57 PM (GMT)
Fulamak cun la brader, ape nak fikirkan lagi daaa.....you should start with the 35 scale one hehehehe.
Yeah with white background looks much better, before this aku pun shoot pics takde background hehehe. Nampak dull je & kureng menarik.
Congrats bro for finishing this beautiful boat.
4 thumbs up!!!!
landyshah - January 30, 2009 05:03 AM (GMT)
Thanks bro, there are some things im not happy with which I hope to improve on for future.
Ill take a quick last shot once in the case...will be delayed cos kedai frame is Gong xi until next week...
Kan hang nih suka tengok case :P
