Title: Platypus The Missing Link
Description: Su-34 ,1/72 ,Italeri/Tamiya
enghui - January 13, 2009 02:24 AM (GMT)
Hi guys, well this it the first project for the year.I was working on this bird after FLYNAVY! but MLFGB came and no way I can finish this for that, so I put it aside and did the Whirlwind.
This kit was first released in the 1990s ,I got my first one from Kenny G at Minature Hobby in 1Utama.This is my second kit of this plane. The first one ended up in the trash can after frustrations with the airbrush about 10years ago.
First job was to correct the panel lines as they look like longkangs.dremel advised me to use supaglue mixed with talcum powder to cover all the longkangs up.It worked very well. Not all panel lines were covered up only the wrong ones(I hope).
The Gun vents were raised detail and was the wrong shape also.So this had to be fixed.Using diagrams from www.airwar.ru and pictures I rebuilt the cooling vents.

1st attempt Plastic.Well I didnt like it.

After I removed it I searched thru my spare PE parts and found vent parts for a Phantom that fit very well.

i never success with the CA and talc method...
keep it up sir

Nice vent, eng hui.
Silantra: no need Astro, Wiki also can ady.
enghui - January 13, 2009 05:06 AM (GMT)
thanks guys, glad you like the vent,it seems a little rough to me but slowly I m adjusting it.
Zaidi, adding talcum power to supaglue make it more flexible and easier to sand.
But the bad side is it will dry faster.Mix supaglue with talcum powder until you get a slightly cloudy liquid, about 1 to 3 ratio of powder to supaglue.make small quantities as they dry up very fast.
Tauke Loo, no eggs from this one,its a male.
The Su-34 was nicknamed the Platypus because of the shape of the cockpit and nose area.It has a huge cockpit, bigger than some of the large Russian Bombers. It comes with a toilet and a food heater. The Ejection seats have a massage function built into them(no joke). Why all these equipment? This plane is expected to fly 10hour missions!
Ya ,platypuses are mammals. Here is a write up copied from wikipedia.
The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. It is the sole living representative of its family (Ornithorhynchidae) and genus (Ornithorhynchus), though a number of related species have been found in the fossil record.
The bizarre appearance of this egg-laying, venomous, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal baffled European naturalists when they first encountered it, with some considering it an elaborate fraud. It is one of the few venomous mammals; the male Platypus has a spur on the hind foot that delivers a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans. The unique features of the Platypus make it an important subject in the study of evolutionary biology and a recognisable and iconic symbol of Australia; it has appeared as a mascot at national events and is featured on the reverse of the Australian 20 cent coin. The platypus is the animal emblem of the state of New South Wales.[4]
Until the early 20th century it was hunted for its fur, but it is now protected throughout its range. Although captive breeding programs have had only limited success and the Platypus is vulnerable to the effects of pollution, it is not under any immediate threat.

Thanks guys!Sorry no spa inside......
I seem to have a problem getting the correct colors to match Gunze MrColor.Anyone can tell me what are the right colors to use for cockpit interior and the camo scheme?
here is an update.More cooling vents for the instrument panel. The mesh is from Tamiya King Tiger kit, they are engine grill screens which I didnt use. Also you can see the Pavla resin cockpit for the Su-34.

druid_99 - January 16, 2009 03:41 AM (GMT)
Wah nice progress...
I got to have the Pavla resin cockpit set.. hehehe...
landyshah - January 16, 2009 03:48 AM (GMT)
This is gonna look superb, I can tell...
But do you know why they have those huge vents on the dashboard? Never seen anything like that on other aircraft....maybe its part of cabin heating system?
Silantra - January 16, 2009 03:55 AM (GMT)
Enghui,
according to my references, the cockpit would be light blue...but i cant recall which blue..probably RLM 66 light blue... i will check when i get back...
the cammo color pun sama..i had it written at my hobby room.... i will try to check it tonight...
cooling vents looks fantastic and really kena with the resin cockpit....
with this, my semangat already lemah to start my su-34....

druid 99, the Pavla set is very good, ejection seats, overhead instrument panel ,control sticks, refueling probe besides the cockpit tub and instrument panel.
landy ,I think thats what the vents are for also. However the vents do seem a bit big, I think there should be double the number heh heh.I probably should correct it.
Zaidi , thanks for the colors. The resin set is available on hobby easy.

M working on a Soviet MiG 21PF for the SvGB...
Having trouble with the cockpit colour too... <_<
From references, seems that Soviet aircraft is painted a hue of blue green (azure?) in the cockpit...its supposed to give a calming effect to the pilots...
looks a bit gaudy to me...

for the cockpit color, i'll go for H41-pale green..... and yes, that is exactly the purpose why that color was chosen. :)

Hi guys, finally I have been released by the "Death Grip" of warcraft(if u have ever played a Death Knight u know what I mean)
Here is a small update, I decided the grills are wayy too big and have decided to mask and spray to get the grill detail. Here is a pic of the masking. The straight lines were made with tape.Blue tac shaped with a blunt toothpick made the round shapes as u can see.Like making kuih laaa. The actual model has progressed beyond this...more pics coming soon.
landyshah - March 19, 2009 04:55 PM (GMT)
Aha! Looks like a couple of cold ones at Richard's and admiring his last bastion of manhood gave you some motivation :D
enghui - March 19, 2009 05:06 PM (GMT)
Ya laa, Landy....we need to go back to "Richard's Tropical Last Bastion of Manhood Retreat" every now and then.anybody who's been there will understand.
Actually this work was done some time ago I just never got round to posting it.Will show u guys later progress on a tank I ve been tinkering on.
meanwhile...I m reaching for a cold one now =P

Yo, Mr B, thanks and I agree it does look like RLM 65 or the lighter RLM 76.
enghui - April 20, 2009 04:48 AM (GMT)
major body parts fitted together.I was a bit burnt out on this kit after all the scribing, but I feel better now.The tail has been modified for this particular plane which is the second prototype.
Tailfins and the horizontal stabilizer are from a dragon/hasegawa Su-27 kit.
The tailfins were cut shorter to match this plane.

rtfoe - April 20, 2009 05:02 AM (GMT)
Whaoooh!! the head and tail sure looks wiered man...
Platypus seems right for its name.

Rich n Landy,
Ya she does look strange ,this plane is like Celine Dion, ethier you love her or hate her.
I agree the nose looks very suited for opening durians.Maybe a 1/35 of a 1/72 Platypus in the R n R dio? :P
Thanks kuman for the link. :)
