Title: Helheim Guardian Fr Tru
Description: some crazy dio i had in mind
Becky - January 12, 2009 09:20 PM (GMT)
Been playing Tomb Raider's series for the pass 8 years. Starting from Tomb Raider III to latest Tomb Raider IX a.k.a Tomb Raider: Underworld. I'm very facisnate with the environment in the gameplay. So, after i beaten up Underworld last week, i go through the gallery i unlocked in the game, n i found this sketch ....

Its a huge statue which 'guarded' the entrance to Hel, at the bottom of the cold arctic ocean. Fascinating......
So, here's my sketch for the project. Front n side view.

Its goin to be a HUGE project, building it in approx. 1/35 scale....

There's a 1/35 figurine on top of it, as a guide to its size.
The reason i use Polystyrene for this project, coz its a easiest material i can get. Sketch the outter layer (front view) of the head....

Done cutting....

The cuts continue with different view n angle ..... the helmet.....

That's the progress for now, will continue later (my off day).
This is juz some crazy dio i had in mind, not sure can finish it or not. As for Lara, will mod from the figure i shown.
C & C r welcome. Really hope can finish this project. ;)

interesting subject....!!!!
i want to critic YOU that the GP03 is still unfinished, and now you start another BIG ONE...!!??
but be careful with polystyrene. Quite hard to control as they are very very active towards chemical. It react to strong glue (other than waterbase handcraft glue)... it does not take TAPE either...
In anyway should you find polystyrene too problematic... you can always crumple newspaper to your desired shape, wrap it with alluminium foil, then wrap a layer of bondite to get a fine smooth surface.... if bondite is too expensive, wrap it with TISSUE + PVA glue...

Becky,
I'm impress on your courage of attempting such a large scale sculpt.... as I always amaze these fantasy giant sculpture (like those shown in LOTR) on screen and now U r making them into a dio!!
Never thought of using Polystyrene as base structure of a sculpture.... I presume it will be "cover" up with coat of filla clay thing, right? Just a thought, I came across a material call "paper clay" selling at Multifilla which comes in 2 forms, clay and paste. I think the paste form will suite your sculpture as it will dry up rock hard.
Keep up the good work...

Hi Becky,
Paper clay paste or latex as base coat prior priming helps towards application of polyputty for the rock hard layer. Thereafter fine sand before spraying aerosol paint the cheapest media.
Try gold gilding certain parts like helmet or sword for the chrome effect if not use acrylic gold from Americana.

Paper clay paste ?? as in drop a pack of paper clay in to a buket of watter then apply it ?

Argrillion: Thanks
Williams: Hehe, dun worry its not abandon yet. :P Will hav some update this few day. ^_^ will seal the polystrene after the basic shape is done.
Cptan: Paper clay? Why i never think of that, i was planning to use plaster. :P
Multifilia: Ok, will visit ur place after CNY  . This statue will b in rock color, it been submedge in sea water for centuries.

Drop in water only? I though paper clay paste was mixing white glue, water n paper clay?

Good challenge there Becky,
I think Polysterene is okay to work with. Just coat it with polifilla and paint it with white glue before attempting to use petroleum based paints.
This is what I used for the water in the German S Boat dio. The paint from the Anchor gloss varnish didn't attack the poly underneath.
Stone has a different kind of corrosion under water. Very unique. There are undersea creatures that burrow into stone also.

The paper paste I've mentioned is in ready made form, sealed in plastic bag... Not the tearing=old-newspaper-dip-in-water+glue thing that we all "play" when we were kid.
Maybe Multifilla can post a shot of the product? A picture speaks a thousand words...

Tan: Ya, i know paper clay, i got one pack, can mix with glue n water.
Richard: Great idea of the sea creature. But what kind of creature will there be in the arctic sea beside walrus, seal, Penguin, Polar bear ??? Will there be sharks, octopus, etc in arctic?? ;)
Becky - January 13, 2009 02:01 PM (GMT)
The horn...

After add on the horn, (front)

View from top

Side view

Obviously the the right n left side look different, but this won't be visible after i 'seal' part of the statue in ice.

I see some progress. Now all we need Beachbum to sculpt you some sea creatures (or monster).
You planning of having some sea weeds growing o your statue? Perhaps some crabs deep sea crabs crawling around.

  Becky, what I ment was small sea creatures like the sea worm that can make holes in the stone so your sculpture will look a bit like swiss cheese.
As for arctic mammals a single horned arctic porpoise (Small whale or white dolphin with a unicorn shaped horn at its snout)...dunno what the name is.
So far looking good.
I'll be using polysterene for my dio buildings this Sunday and will show you how I make my buildings from them.
Richard.

Kenny: There'll b seaweed everywhere ^_^ . As for the creature (sea monster), maybe a kraken will be added. :P (The creature actually appeared in TRU but in different ocean.)
Richard: Oops, i misundertood. Now i got it. The creature u refering is call 'Narwhal',
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narwhal Hmm, interesting......
Can't wait for the workshop.
Ok, back to statue, here is some progress... add beard.

Next... paper clay time

Looks good... might be a bit late but I think it will be easier to handle if you are using the green compact foam, the ones usually used for flower arrangements. Easier to shape and it can also be shaped with sandpaper...
