Title: Preparing Car Body For Bling Bling Gloss

maxwinamp - December 30, 2008 03:43 AM (GMT)
Often encounter pple that asked how to do car modeling and afraid of finishing it nice and glossy.

Useful Reference:
FYI, Italian Horses: How to Apply, Polish, and Wax Your Paint to Perfection

Here's a step by step on how I do prepare the kit for gloss (some may have other methods)..

Note: All is done using Spray Cans

1. Wash the kit with soap if it is oily with mold release (but kits nowadays don't really have this problem)

2. Sand away mold lines from kit.

3. Prime the kit.
(IMPORTANT! Use White Primer for all colors unless u are doing a black or metallic color car so that your color can 'shine')

4. Mist Coat

5. Body Wet Coat

6. Gunze Lacquer Gloss (because i find it forms the hardest coat for wet sanding and polishing)

7. Ready for wet sanding and polishing :)

Below are the pics to show the difference between the layers.

what is WET COAT, max?

Wet Coat is spraying the paint on the kit until it is almost look wet.

The coating will be thick.

Important to have minimum dust in the area when doing this.

Decal and polishing comes in separate tutorials. Stay tuned.

Till then.. u can see my past tutorial on carbon fibre hood for cars.

Polishing I use a cotton rag

Gloss spray i use Gunze Spray Can gloss (as i find it the hardest when cure for wet sanding and polishing)

gunze spraycan? (will go expensive next year).huhuhuuu..
so,for primer, base color n toapcoat, how many days u wait until to move for next step..i mean after u apply primer, how many days u wait until u lay next base color..?
how about waiting time between mist n wet coat..?

1. Primer before mist coat.. about 2 hours
2. mist coat before main body coat about 1 hour
3. main coat before wet coat about 1 hour
4. Wet coat before lacquer gloss (48hours)
5. Lacquer gloss before wet sanding and polishing (48 hours)

But the above is my rough estimate.

Polishing compound - Tamiya polishing compound.

Polishing wax = Tamiya modeling wax

Hi,

I'm wondering if Tamiya Compounds are similar with Novus in final result?

Thx
