Got this kit today frm HHQ, all I can say is, good deal. only one more left.

user posted image
The size is massive, but the amount of parts are quite simple if compared with those 1/48 modern jets that i build. Should be able to finish in 20 days.

user posted image
The size of the wing compared with my 1/48th A6M5

I will build this kit with a heavy weathered finish. wish me luck.

anyone with experience on this kit, feel free to post ur comments and advice here.

thanks for viewing.

Bomber Vince - December 8, 2008 01:23 AM (GMT)
guys, need help. anyone have a copy os hase or tamiya 1/48 N1K2 instructions? I really need a copy coz the kit's instructions are all japanese and only very minor guide on color.

I've tried googled but fail. manage to find a 1/72 hase instruction but due to the small scale, things are limited.

thanks

pemlow - December 8, 2008 10:57 AM (GMT)

Guy,

Since this is MLF (Mr. Low Fun build) no need to follow instruction and color scheme lar. ha ha ha.

@Vince

Here you go, a link from a online hobby store, I use it very frequent when I need some drawing and question bout the paint code. :D

Happy modelling.

thanks Chris, that's the one I have, looking for a 1/48th one, if possible.

dry-fitted the fuselage..

Bomber Vince - December 9, 2008 03:47 AM (GMT)
Here's some pic that I've spend 2 days googled.... work frm others. I'm trying to fugure out the correct finishing. I will do lots of paint chipping this time, so please help me to work this out.

user posted image
Pic 1: subtle amount of chipping, but that much exhaust stain? Fuel tank yellow?

user posted image
Pic 2: 2 tone chipping? Dark green with blue hue

user posted image
Pic 3: Heavilly weathered (too much I think..), Standard IJN dark green

user posted image
Pic 4: this one looks bit too new and fresh, Standard IJN Dark green, fuel tank light green?

Few thing I need to clarify.
1. The amount of chipping and fading.
2. The Nakajima Green
3. Exhaust stain.
4. Fuel tank color.

For those with information on IJN planes, feel free to comment. thanks

chipping everywhere even when the plane is still consider new.

user posted image
Lots of fading on the hot engine areas, dirty tail (lower areas). different panel shading under the wing.

user posted image
this one been through quite some battle, chipping everywhere, but the Hinomaru still fresh. this is the plane that I wanna build.

Here's some valuable pic I found, a un-restore George, same squadron with the above plane. pic are in band condition, I fix it with photoshop, adjust the color until the white areas are white. That's how I get the correct dark. green for the plane. The yellow areas are faded, almost white. The picture clearly shows lots of uneven fading through out the fuselage.

BV,,

Goodluck to your build...

Bomber Vince - December 9, 2008 04:16 AM (GMT)
Conclusion:

1. Blue hue on the Dark Green, but not as blue as "Pic 2"
2. Fading on panels, both top and bottom.
3. No exhaust stains.
4. Areas with the pilot's name are darker, I think they used to change the pilots, over spray the old names.
5. Fresh "meat balls"

I still can't find out what's the color of the fuel tank. Guys, correct me if I'm wrong, your comments are much appreciated.

user posted image
wanna have this finishing, although it's a cgi image, but it's the closest to what I thin is correct.

interestingly, both aircraft have US stars on the wings.... late-war captured planes perhaps? but the ground crew look like japs..

PoohBear - December 9, 2008 11:49 PM (GMT)
Maybe the US markings are subtle attempts at camouflage to blend the Japanese birds within the American formations? By the time the US pilots noticed they are not friendlies, it would be too late for them...

Or just maybe there's another story to the photo.

azlandiver - December 10, 2008 02:57 AM (GMT)
interesting vince.....can't wait to see this plane finished :)

Bomber Vince - December 10, 2008 09:02 AM (GMT)
Pooh, I'm thinking that way too, even the pilot looks like Japs to me.

Azlan, thanks for the encouragement.

I used to build my 1/48th plane's cockpit oob, as it's hard to see the details once the cockpit closed. But for this size, the kit's cockpit really needs some improvement.

tai kor chan,

I use to be in the WWII stuff.... many many years ago. But now I like sharp nose stuff...lol! But there's still some of the essence inside me.

some progress...

the gun door does not sit well....

user posted image
I wont do anything on the left wing as I will leave it open.

user posted image
as for the right wing, I used hot glue to "raised" it to the desired level. Careful with hot glue as too much might melt the plastic. I apply bits by bits.

user posted image
the shape and curve of the doors are nice, and the hot glue are strong enough to be handle.

user posted image
some filler and scribing are still necessary.

did some upgrade, all the mold on levers are removed, scribed the groove, and some details with sprue and plaplate. I wish to do more but I'm seeing stars... ;)

bos i was at MHQ ...i aslo got this 1/24 George kit...cheap la.

ok this is what i want to say....this is a classic kit and hard to find, i myself never dreamt i would get my hands on one.
But..... no doubt its impressive but this kit is not very accurate. the engine is undersized, the cockpit is inaccurate and filled with mistakes.
Never the less this kit offer the chance for some stratch building and with enough patient one can turn this kit into a show winnner.
but i doubt one could turn this kit into anything meaningfull within 20 days..plenty of time will be needed to super detail this kit, and it would be awaste if you dont, after all this is a classic kit and its a shame to it OOB...as you might never get the chance to lay your hands on another one.

Forget about the dateline brader....work on this kit when you have enough information, just take your time..6 months perhaps....just my 2 cents
anyway i wont be starting mine until i have collected enough info especially on engine wirings as i intend to cut open the engine service hatches

just look at the amount of wiriing on the engines

Mej,

The hot glue is just to hold the panel to prevent it to sink, due to the massive gaps between the doors and wings, it's impossible to stick it with superglue or cement.
Hot glue hardens once it turn cold, just what I want.

I don't think this is detailing lar, just add in more stuff.

Ari,

Thanks for the nice pic, no doubt this is a vintage kit, and I'm totally agree with u that this kit impressive but not very accurate. the engine is undersized, the cockpit is inaccurate and filled with mistakes.

Agree that this kit offer a chance to be super detailed, but that's not the reason that I buy this kit, I bought it to challenge myself to extreme weathering.

In fact I gave up props plane a year ago, getting this with a good price coz completing this kit in such short time is a promise by me, think I'll keep the promise.

P.S..... If I really think of super detailing this kit, there's one more in the shop...lol

ari - December 16, 2008 04:52 PM (GMT)

Some addition on the MG area,

user posted image
I've combined 2 sets of bullet rack so that it can feed well to the MG.

user posted image
I sprayed a coat of silver to check for flaws before scribing.

the kit's clear parts a not well molded, surface are un-even, small bubble here and there and even residue.. I wet sanded both the outer and inner surface with 2000 grit sand paper, note the little bubble and the white marks, all are molded in.

user posted image
After sanding I polish with autosol, tamiya compound then tamiya fine compound. but the marks are still there. :(

user posted image
another big problem, no way to remove it coz it's inside.

user posted image
polishing done, then I dipped in Future.

Bomber Vince - December 23, 2008 06:09 AM (GMT)
Just can't stop my self for adding stuff to this plane, I won't do details that can't be seen after completion, but this plane has lots of places where we can add more details.

BV, looks like you're using TIME card for the details.. hahaha... TIME Kontact Card is it??? :D

Bomber Vince - December 23, 2008 06:15 AM (GMT)
a no pic update till yesterday nite, interior fully painted and weathered, main fuselage sealed (the hardest part). I've tried the "salt chipping" method on the areas that will be hidden, result are promising, much more easier then my usual chipping...

Imran,

it's actually a Time 017 (now maxis) open/close plate where they used to stick infront of the shop, cost me RM0 and works perfectly.

testing-testing, added salt to the rear areas, to speed things up, I used hair dryer to dried up the salt, then sprayed with interior green.

result looks convincing...

painted and weathered with acrylics, 2b pencil, color pencil, red marker and lastly a coat of dirty wash.

Really good so far Bomber,

Can you make it on time?

You must be on holiday to be able to complete so much. :D

Careful...rest whenever you can.

Richard.

Bomber Vince - December 23, 2008 07:36 AM (GMT)
Richard,

I think I'll spend most of my Christmas holiday at home...if HM permits..

this is what I planned

23rd - seat belts, glue everything together and putty.

24th - sand and prime, then sand and prime again and scribing

25th - play with salt and base coat, apply decal if possible. If there's time, I'll add wiring on the landing gear bay.

26th - dirty wash, flat coat and weathering with pastel.

27th - if there's any delay..... (can work on the morning session only)

Bomber Vince - December 30, 2008 01:14 PM (GMT)
hmmmm...can't even make it to MLFGB, this is the second time I can't finish on time, coincidentally the first time is also a Japanese plane.

I really under-estimate this kit, it requires more time then what I expected, and my plan on building during holiday also blown off by HM... <_<

I took picture during my build but have no time to post it, I will proceed with the build and hopefully can make it for New HHQ opening instead.

12/26, 8.00 am: Pin marks everywhere, filled with putty and pla-plate the night before and sanded smooth.

user posted image
12/26, 8.00 am: this is the result after 4 times of sanding (done the night before around 3am), a final layer of putty was apply again.

user posted image
12/26 4.30pm: sanded smooth and scribe the panel lines and re-do the rivets

user posted image
12/26 5.00pm: primed with silver again and did some final sanding.

Bomber Vince - December 30, 2008 01:50 PM (GMT)

12/26, 6.22pm: Finally the body is smooth and the cockpit areas under the canopy sprayed. I spray the canvas areas with a layer of pale light green to create a different tone and texture after the top coat.

user posted image
12/27, 2.40am: Finally tha canopy "sits" down firmly and blended to the fuselage, this is after at least 6 times of filling and "wiping" of diluted tamiya putty, I use diluted tamiya putty instead of Gunze dissolved putty coz Tamiya Putty dries faster. I worked on the landing gears and canopy masking during the waiting time.
I use salt for the chipping this time, mix some blue poster color in it so that I can easily see where I've applied it, praying that it will work.

user posted image
12/27, 3.23am: I sprayed the panel lines first.

user posted image
12/27, 4.45am: Managed to sprayed one side completely only and more coats required the right wings, paint finished in the cup and I was too tired at that time.

user posted image
12/27, 4.47am: Have a final look at the plane before sleep, not really satisfied with the chipping as the edges are bit too "rounded"
