Title: 1/9 Scale Bofors 57mm Mk.3 Naval Gun
Description: I've to build 4 units.....from scratch..
dremel - November 17, 2008 07:33 PM (GMT)
Hi guys….Having faith from previous built…..and now next job have to get it done on time…. B)
Another Bofors 57mm naval gun, I’d built it before in smaller scale….
Actually this project was started earlier than BTR-90, btw because of IndonDefence I’ve to finish it on the 10 nov, what the shame I can’t make it…. And Bofors we put a target at 10 dec as a date line. Its quite close to each other, that why I’m not be able to join u all in FlyNavy GB, so sad….i’m on duty.....its will be nice if this one is one of the participant…ehe
As for this job, I’d provided with a very good reference such cut away drawing, and very detail technical drawing. It’s far better than broachers that I got from LIMA08 as a guide for last built.
As usual I will translate the drawing to the template section by sections. And enlarge it, this I have to build 4 units, so I ask 1 of my friend who was a carpenter to cut 6mm plywood as a basic shape.
Template

Template was cut on 6mm plywood

Assembling

Its help a lot and next task is assembled each template to the shape and 1 layer of fiber cloth was applied to hold the join. I need to do that because of the size, epoxy may not strong enough, its might spoil during sanding process. There is a way to duplicate it by using fiber mold. I’d bought 50kg fiber cloth in order to make it. Btw….I’d to cancel it because it’s not suitable to works in my workshop. So I’d decided works 1 by 1…..not that bad actually…. just need more putty…ehe
Putty time…more out door activity.... :D

1st sanding

2nd putty

2nd sanding

Bottoms cover fitting….

Ready for next step surfacer

A few more sanding process needed….stay tune….

Thanks so much for viewing….C&C are welcome….
Best Regards

Wah Naza, your sanding machine sure comes in handy this time... Mesti mesin2 tu bekerja keras punya sekarang ni... hehehe...
By the way, no internal structure for this one? Nampak macam kosong jee kat dalam tu?

Naza..
i thought you need to build only 1 .. now 4.. pergh...
by looking at these mass production and at this scale, i wonder about a few thing la Naza..
so for those sanding process.. you do it by hand? or u have those sanding machine? cant imagine sanding those putty off by hand... if by hand.. you must have had a pair of big arms by now :D
So the surfacer, its not the normal Mr Surfacer right? else it would take a lot of bottle to cover the whole thing... correct?
i heard that the fiber-cloth is not good for our health.. or is it someother fibre?
ever think about doing a cut-away model for one of these guns Naza? since i think can see on the background that they provide you with a detail technical schematic of the interior (is it?), that would be awesome... but more job for you laa.. and Dec 10 is not very far :D
that should be it for now naza..
good luck and buat elok elok :D

Hi guys…I’m so sorry for the late reply….
Here some update of the bofors naval gun….
As usual, I’ve to works hard to get the shape smooth, you are right hands couldn’t take this task, you’ll loss finger print for ever…..as for an assistant I used sanding machine. It’s really make my life easier, btw …be care full my friend, you might over sanding it, make sure watch out an invisible line, mark it to prevent the proportions/angel slanted.
Sanding machine that I used….

I’d a few sanding treatment after the previous post of the turret. At this stage I’d took an opportunity to refine an angel and line till there’re no putty mark scratches and what so ever. Btw this is not the last sanding process thou, there are a few more when doors, gun barrel and parts attached. I’ll post the progress soon.
Turret update pictures….sanding process must do it at out door, sanding machine produced dust all over the worl….

I donno how to call this….I’ve to make it 3 more copy…..

Just slot it in….I’m not attached yet….I still have to build a mechanical parts so that gun barrel moveable.

Parts for gun barrel,. I o 2 more parts, pictures will be coming soon….
Gun Barrel process, as usual I would love to build it from scratch rather than used from plastic rod. So that I can get any seize that I want. In this case I’d plan to recast, I don’t think scratch built another three is practical..

Kuman- Surfacer, no.5 Aerosol brand.
William, no problem…..but I think wait till I get a proper place/workshop…ehe
Revliss-I used commercial real car putty, its callpolly putty…any hard ware shop available.
That’s all about it….see you on next post…HAPPY MODELING…
C&C are welcome………
Besty Regards
Naza

Aik?? Filter yang kuman intro tu tak boleh nak tapis habok ker? I thought when it is capable of tapis-ing odour, it is good enough to filter dust?

Dremel,
This is an example of a good dust mask.

Notice the word particulate - for airborne particulate i.e dust
and this is an example of what i had and used.

It's a combo of chemical and dust.
The white thing on the front of the intake is the dust filter and the black housing underneath of it is the chemical filter. There are several type an color codes, and if my rusty memory still serve me right, the black color label means for Chlorine.
and example of the usage :

Here's the guys is wearing the black label too.
I got the olive green label which is for organic vapours.
Koo,
you may get the info right.
The primary purpose of the filter is NOT to filter the odor but the chemical vapour.
Some chemical gives a lower Odour Threshold Limit (OTL) but higher Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL). In another word, when u start to smell it, you're way above the PEL and may be at RISK.
Most chemical filter are made of absorbent material like charcoal (for non-VOC) compound that will trap the route of any chemical molecules when passing the filter. They will absorb the molucules.
While most of it can also trap a dust particle but does not absorb it. Futher usage will block the filter and reduce the performance and efficiency of the filter. Thus, made it useless to protect you.
Dust mask made of network of fibrous material that function to trap and size of particulate specified in the specs.
Most dust can be trapped by our nose hair and the fluid inside our nose. What worry is a a type of dust called respirable dust. The size is less then 10 micron and our body defense system wont filter this type of dust. This is where we need a special filter to trap the particle. Only those of the particulate dust mask can be used for these purposes. These very fine dust will even pass through the chemical absorbent 9coz it's not meant for dust) and can also pass through the normal cheap mask AKA surgical mask or any sponge type mask ( I saw one that look like a pasar malam cheap bra)...
Remember it's our safety and health. These chemical and dust mostly gives a chronic effect - meaning u will only get bad things after a few years or 20 years.
Prolong exposure of dust will result in so many dust related diseases and the worst case you may get silicosis - a type of lung cancer.
An what matter most is the exposure control that we put in place.... not just these mask alone will save us...
Just doing my community job and sorry to bore you with this morning lecture.
Zaidi...
ps: HEy, how about a health and safety workshop???
pss : edited - sorry Naza coz i hijacked and turn this into a boring safety ceramah... huhuh
koowilliams - November 27, 2008 06:00 AM (GMT)
thanks so much sil... now because of me, this super scratch build section of Naza suddenly turned to mask discussion...
with such explanation, i think im clearer on mask filter when i purchase mine... up till now, i always spray outdoor, and use mostly acrylic, main reason is, no money... maybe next year have better luck...
