Title: Miniart Roman Legionaire 1ad
Description: progress
Loo CK - October 31, 2008 05:33 PM (GMT)
What started out as the kit review
here is now continued with the construction and painting.
Construction.
This kit is not for the faint hearted as the details needed a lot of repair due to the abundant of flash and poor fit. I guess for a figure model of this scale at the affordable price region, there is really no point complaining. Some of the part moulding could have been better planned. For example, the legs come in 4 slices, front, back and sides which was rather odd. The plastic also tends to react rather slowly to Tamiya extra fine and Gunze cement.
Painting.
I decided to paint the figure in airbrush mode for most of the shading and highlighting with oils. The paint sequence can be seen in the next few shots.
A word of caution to those who have yet to start on this kit is that the decals are poor as the adhesive does not dissolve in water but rather turns into some chalky blob. Had a hard time cleaning it up at the expense of the decals breaking into a few segments. Decided then to ignore it and oil painted all the film edges. After the oils dry, a coat of near dried futures will be stippled on to get rid of all the scarring.

The battle damage to the armor will be introduced next to hide all the imperfect surfaces. Detailed painting will be picked up with Vallejo
The more descriptive write up will be compiled in the MalaysiaScaleModelling.com site soon.
Meanwhile C&C welcomed...

A few more extra hours on the details and abandoning the decals on the shield ( see earlier pic) for a hand painted job.
Only a bit more on the base and the shield to be done before the final matt coat to the figure and off to the display shelf it goes!

The gold paint was extracted from an Artline gold marker dilluted in commercial thinner.
As usual C&C welcomed!
Cheers and happy modelling

Naza, very sharp eyes Bro,
memang there is a split line in the right hand. It appeared after I dropped the hand too often and have not repaired it yet. The hands are only stuck on with blu tack at the moment and I will likely need to repair it .....
Cheers

To wrap up, I've resanded and repainted some of the shoulder armor and the shields have a first round oil accent now. The seam line at the right hand has been repaired and glued onto the torso.
Some detailed paintjob will be required for all the armor straps and leather bits but the details are not sharp enough to carry this thru. Will try my best and psot some pics tonite.

huh..?? that's it? :o :o
Loo,
i've seen your works and I'm suprise why this one come out like this...? hope you dont mind but i wonder why you left this one with that minimal tone for shading? i mean this one looks so GLOW... especially the calves, look too smooth and fair and lady like to me... or the lighting has blasted too much while photo shooting? :o :o

Aaahhhhh... Ancient Roman subject..... My favouraite!!
The Miniart Roman Legionaire kit is consider quite detail if build OOB....
Tawkay Loo, I must ask one question, base on your picture shown the visor of the helmet is a bit tilt upward... Is it the kit part are moulded or to be join this way? Base on my knowing that the famous Roman Gallic helmet as shown picture :

... the visor supposed to be at parallel level with edge of the helmet.
I would suggest you to apply some whethering on the armour plates. As far as most people like the display the Roman "Lorica Segmentata"

as shining chrome as possible.... But in reality, these shining plates will show rust stain after an outdoor exposure (even without rain wash)....
Lastly, you must apply matt coat to the shield, too glossy looks like plastic.
My 2 cents,
CPTan

Loo,
I'm currently working on a 1/72 scale legioss fighter (mospeada) and a 1/72 corsair. hope to finish them soon.
Later maybe tackle some figures and armour. Too bad i dun have any ancient warriors figure else i could try to "copy" your skills here... hehehe

The fleshtones on the arms and legs are quite well done. As usual me being me I would have gone for a slightly more tan look but then again painting too many dirty, grimy WWII and Vietnam figgies can make one partial to weathered look. :)
I can't see any cracks on the decals so looks like you did an excellent job there. As for the armor perhaps a bit more of a darker metallic wash or a bit of Tamiya smoke in between segments and around the fastening points may help make the armor more dramatic. For example making the bottom half of each of the individual breastplates segments darker and leaving the top portion of each individual plate as it is will add to the plating effect. Minor though.
On a sidenote Miniart does make some simple but highly affordable large scale historical figgies and are good practice for figgie painters.

some more updates:

and some fun with a graphics program.
In a nutshell, the armor has had a layer of washes and some rusting done. Some brush dragging will be required once the oils are a little bit drier.
The shield has been matted down, details added and battle damage done.
Some further highlighting is done.
Cheers

Tawkay Loo,
May I know what paint did U use for the plate armor to achieve the shine?
Loo CK - November 5, 2008 12:08 AM (GMT)
CP,
I used Gunze super metallics chrome silver with a bit of commercial thinner to thi it down and low pressure airbrushing.

CK,
I have completely painted over the decals in this case. A strong word of caution to any who are building the Miniart figures....do not use the decals. You will not like the end results.
What I effectively had to do was sand paper down the decal edges and coat it with the base red colours again showing just a hint of the decal markings. The gold and blacks were handpainted on and touched up with a black marker.
