Title: Spidey!
Description: Vinyl kit

Loo CK - September 29, 2008 02:35 PM (GMT)
This is a very well posed Spider man vinyl kit which was in the market many years back.
The construction of vinyl kits are very different and will be explained in a later posting. Enjoy!

It has just been black primed to check for surface defects and should be painted this weekend as a sidestep from my usual military stuff.

The overall kit was put together with 3M SuperGlue (which is currently my favourite Superglue) and putty filled with a mix of squardron green (for bulk) and Gunze dilluted for the seams.

A bit of reheating is done with a hairdryer to bend the pieces back to shape and then the entire kit was basecoated with Tamiya flat black. Pits are still evident here and there and I chose to ignore them hoping that the painting later will reduce the flaws.

The red shades were done entirely with Gunze lacquers with a slight tint of yellow for the highlights. I will be using a very dark and gloomy overall scheme so that the figurine does not look too cartoony.

The flat coats are still pending and whether to retain this leathery look will be decided later when the blues are in.

C&C welcomed

The reds came out very well. The black undercoat gives the reds a nice translucent, 'stretched skin' feel to it. The fig itself has an excellent Spidey pose and this would look great mounted on a dio of partial building wall. Not sure if you want to push this well painted fig further though Loo but a bit of literary licence and exaggeration could be done to spidey's spider motif on his back if you outline the spider motif on his back using a brush with a much darker shade of red. And if you really want to go all the way the center portion of the spider motif in a much lighter shade of red. Almost like a liner which would bring out the spider emblem out more. Minor though.

Nice, very, very nice.

Nice Spidey.... as usual...your skill is superb...
how big is the spidey???

ps: noticed your kid is watching youtube..huhuh

Loo CK - October 6, 2008 04:16 AM (GMT)
Sil,
I think its a 1/8 scale kit and my son is watching Pokemon on Youtube in Japanese!

CK,
The sculptor did an excellent job and I am trying to reconcile the rendition in the comics, movies and my own intepretation for the paint job. At the moment, I am going for a very dark mood and only the head, fingers and toes area will have a little more highlight including the well toned muscles on the shoulders. One concern is that once I put on the matt coat, a lot of the contrast will drop, Including the leathery feel which is apparent now.
Agree with you on the spidey emblem. Haven't got the right formula yet.

I am still undecided on how to do the webbing lines too. Might be handpainted in black and follow how Allan did his lines with highlights in certain areas. Contemplating of using silver on the eyes too.

I will be maintaining a lot of the black on the blue areas. Might be even using a matt blue. Might have a very interesting effect.

PS: The mighty Thor and HULK is really awesome too!

Loo just a thought though but you can still give maintain the 'satin' look with an ink rather than just giving it a overall wash of matt blue. The Citadel inks come to mind and the Purple ink over your current bluish-black portions would give it an interesting translucent sheen. Citadels inks are really striking and give the underlying coat some interesting hues.

As for emphasizing the Spidey motif the approach I mentioned in my post is similarly done to bring out the details in heraldry on shields and flages. If you check the pics in the link below, notice how the whites of the lion emblems are emphasized with a greyish outline and the reds and blues on the shield are made more vivid by a similar approach of using a darker shade of red and blue respectively.

Highlights and shadows in Heraldry

CK,
thanks for the link. The heraldry was done with some punch. I will try to post some of the progress tonight.

Cheers and Make Mine Marvel!

some progress on the blues and the bug eyes using bare metal foil. Undecided yet on whether to outline the webbings with dark lines or faded.... Decisions, decisions....

Meanwhile C&C welcomed..

Very obvious in the shots are the badly done seam putty lines as I was getting a bit impatient with the sanding on soft vinyl which tends to deform easily. The putty keeps breaking and getting a grip was difficult, so a lot of it was ignored. I will come rouond to do some localised repair later. I guess the proper thing to do in the next kit would be to fill it up with plaster first. Nothing beats on the job training!
The next update posting should be the completed kit in MalaysiaScaleModelling.com.

Cheers

Way to go on the Wall crawler! And neat trick with the BMF.

But....where's the clock? Hahaaa

If you had another Spidey kit, you could do the webbing both ways. Best of both worlds.

If it was me I'd go with the dark lines drawn in using a very fine tip marker. Any bleeding can be recovered with minor touchups of the red. Black lines would bounce off nicely against a red background. My 2 cts.

CK,
I started with a few lines on the right hand and sort of thought the contrast was too cartoony. Will probably try a burgundy black mix next.

By the way, I really should have prepared the surface better because there are so many pits and scars all over, this kit makes Harvey 2 face look like a Ms Universe.

Pooh,
need to go to Multifilla to buy the clock mechanism. It may just turn out that way as a vignette of spidey atop a clock tower

Me like very much :D How much does it cost and where did you buy it? Looks like the lines you did on the hand works so I think you should stick with that. Would an oil wash help?

Cheers
Patrick

Patrick,
Check out this website (http://animehgk.com/supermain.htm) to get your answers.
Tried the oil wash but still not convinced yet. Will post some updates soon.
