Title: Carl Vinson Carrier Deck Diorama
Description: circa 1983?
Loo CK - September 4, 2008 04:37 AM (GMT)
Guys and gal,
Following up on the earlier intention to do a carrier deck diorama for the year end Naval Aviation meet, who's game for this?
We are thinking of putting together a section of the flight and inner deck in 72 scale, using the Academy F-14A kit.
PoohBear - September 4, 2008 04:44 AM (GMT)
I'm in :)
Now where'd that F-14 cat go?
Here kitty kitty...

Cannot commit at moment as office work just add up. We had discuss about this a few months back.
One hope that I have is that if you guys decide to built the island, hope someone can keep or do an instruction on "how-to...". Its something that the club can keep an for members use as reference. Infact the control tower for the previous airshow too could be consider as the first item (assuming ada lagi)
we have a club. we share knowledge amongst us. Why not keep or have this instruction for future members use?
My 2 sen input.

I'm in. Which squadron and who's providing the plane numbers? Weapons load out? Wings swept, over swept, or open? Open or closed canopy? Etc etc etc.

The dio will be in 72 scale and its already too big based on only a section. We have to keep it mobile enough to move around.
At the moment, the preliminary plan is to show the cut section to display top flight deck and hangar deck, with a top good enough to fit 6 planes. Possibly, 2 different squadron markings and some auxillary and support birds/helis.

Hope this helps.

otherwise it will be on CAT 4 launch sequence....
zendened - September 5, 2008 03:44 AM (GMT)
are you gonna assign each other a diff BUNO to built?
i wanna join too but the question is the decals now hehe
PoohBear - September 5, 2008 04:13 AM (GMT)
Preliminary, the timeline is circa '83 on board the Carl Vinson. Squadron looks to be VF-51 and perhaps one other to be locked down. Anyone has more info on which Sqdn was onboard during that time?
Silantra - September 5, 2008 04:14 AM (GMT)
zendened - September 5, 2008 01:50 PM (GMT)
if its vf-51.. decals are just straight outta the box hehe..
anyone got lubang for the vf-111? willing to trade with 1/72 vf-103 final cruise
razmanosaurex - September 5, 2008 03:34 PM (GMT)
kit mane yang ade? academy or italeri for 72nd scale
thugs_or_die - October 14, 2008 01:19 PM (GMT)
why hasegawa f-14 can not join.. my f-14 all from hasegawa la...
PoohBear - October 14, 2008 11:55 PM (GMT)
ToD, Hasegawa F-14A is ok. Come join the fun!
Academy was chosen for its VF-51 decals (& perhaps the low cost! ^_^) although the varied markings may need to be sourced from elsewhere.
We would certainly like each bird to have different BuNos so that they don't all belong to the sqdn leader.
Do share if you guys have come across any info / ref on this sqdn / CV :)
cheers
Loo CK - October 15, 2008 01:27 AM (GMT)
Its Ok, we will do a hypothetical visiting bird scene!
Silantra - October 15, 2008 02:05 AM (GMT)
so can my hase F-14A VF-111 join the fun too??
PoohBear - October 15, 2008 03:11 AM (GMT)
Silantra - October 15, 2008 03:23 AM (GMT)
orait..
so when is the submission date??
ehh how big is the decK??
PoohBear - October 15, 2008 04:01 AM (GMT)
Well, the plan is to debut at the Fly Navy event so, that would be the deadline to work to.
Real estate depends on no. of a/c & whether multilevel with hangar & elevator or just topside only.
Silantra - October 15, 2008 04:11 AM (GMT)
like i told earlier in another thread, my f-14 was completed 2 years ago for the retirement party... that's why i ask if it can join in...
so then i could bring the cat to the deck on the said date
Loo CK - October 15, 2008 05:41 AM (GMT)
I have actually started to CAD some of the parts for the carrier and I may have to replan the dio. Its way too big.......
As for the entries into the dio, I thinkwe can go around that idea of visiting birds and squads
f-4dablemodels - October 16, 2008 08:07 AM (GMT)
VF-51's sister squadron has been VF-111 since both started flying the F-14, right until dis-establishment in the early 90's.

I confirm that 40 mm is right for 1/72.
I scanned a portion of the Trumpeter USS Nimitz deck, and when I scaled it up to 1/72 and measured the distance from one pad-eye to the next, it came to approx 40 mm.
Loo CK - October 22, 2008 03:42 PM (GMT)
gents,
this is the base drawing for a 3 feet x 2 feet section. I think it may clash a bit with what EngHui and Jason are planning in terms of scenes but this is the most dramatic shot available to see the important aspects of the carrier, namely the cat and the elevators. (of course, the bridge tower is important! but it won't fit into the car boot, sirs!)

Comments welcomed as I am about to cut the deck piece.
Cheers
thugs_or_die - October 22, 2008 06:06 PM (GMT)
how many tomcat can fit in?
PoohBear - October 22, 2008 11:48 PM (GMT)
Haha. The planes look cute in CAD.
Me thinks it looks a little...compacted though. Maybe one of the birds is a little too close to the blast shield.
koowilliams - October 23, 2008 01:01 AM (GMT)
Loo... can the deck size be bigger..?? some empty space to counter the fully parked deck would look better...

if the dio is bigger, we will have problem transporting it.
Loo, good progress, anything that I can help on the dio?
masterqq - October 23, 2008 03:40 AM (GMT)
guys,
found this on the net... a deck pack with tomcats.. :D
Loo CK - October 23, 2008 08:30 AM (GMT)
I can lengthen it by half a foot but not more....
Silantra - October 24, 2008 09:31 AM (GMT)
so how many planes will be in this dio??

BV,
I am thinking of getting an architectural modeller friend to help CAD/CAM laser cut the pieces. Once done, I will see whether we can do a group stick job!
Loo CK - November 1, 2008 04:57 PM (GMT)
I have done the research on the markings and its an easy conversion for the academy kits decal. The squadron leader for VF51 in 1983 had multicoloured tail bands while the other birds in the squadron had 3 red bands

as for the the other squadron VF111, squadron leader had this marking

while the other birds were

its full steam ahead!
PoohBear - November 2, 2008 03:14 AM (GMT)
hmm...need the tail band decals and also the sqdn nos. cuz the academy decal set is for the sqdn leader only.
And the antiglare is from the nose tip up to the windscreen edge. Everything else looks to be gull grey FS16440.
Does the VF-51 tail leading edge look like gull grey?

Pooh,
looks like it.
There is a description of the scheme. I have saved it somewhere and will dig it up.
Meanwhile, those who are interested, the Fujimi AliCat f14-A kit has the sundowner markings which are for the mid 80s! Not sure if its still in HHQ.
