Description: getting started

Loo CK - September 4, 2008 04:15 AM (GMT)
After the hectic Merdeka08, lets start on Merdeka09!

First up is the Bren Gun Carrier which will be modified from the Tamiya Universal Gun Garrier. There are some major bashing required and more will be posted after the research is complete.
At the moment all phots and research material indicates a Bren Gun Carrier MK 2/1 type....

mr loo... i saw bren gun carrier in tempur mag..but only one pic...
but did the bren gun carrier is same like universal carrier?

Raz,
the universal carrier is the later version of the bren gun carrier. They share the same concept but different engine, layout, etc....
The photos for WW2 indicates that the Malaya campaign had both the British and Australian versions.

Guys,
I will try to do some technical drawings scaled from drawings to show you the difference.

Actually, Tamiya's kit will be used as a base to modify the kit. The running gears has minor differences but the layout of the interior is very different. So is the layout of the parts in the front of the carrier. The mud guards and side fenders needs to be remodelled too.

wow...did u refer to any blue print or just from old picture as a guide?

Loo CK - September 6, 2008 05:46 AM (GMT)
Razman,
I am referring to the photo archives from the Australian War Memorial and Imperial War Museum sites and also to the Osprey Book on the subject.
Will get a summary out soon on how to mod this from the Tamiya kit. Do note that there are 3 different Tamiya models and this will be on the forced recon kit.

Gents,
A bit of update on the subject matter. I have made quite an extensive reference search in the Osprey book, AWM and IWM photos and the excellent (but pricey) Universal Carrier (UC)book by Nigel Watson and I can summarise the following:

1) From wartime photos, they are 2 different makes,

a)the Universal Carrier Mk 1 produced from Worseley UK ( see Australian War Memorial pics from their website with vehiche ref. WD no T21086 and pg 112 of UC book) and

B) the Bren Gun Carrier No2 Mk 1 either produced in Nuffield or Thornycroft UK

The Universal Carrier is distinctly different from the Bren Carrier by looking at the all round armor as the Bren Carrier has an evident sloping right rear armor.

As for the mods from the basic Tamiya kit, backdating it to a Bren Carrier is a lot of work as the tool position, armor, layout is drastically different.

To backdate the Tamiya kit to the Universal Carrier Mk1, the rear seat is reduced to one as the Mk2 has a crew of 4 while the Mk1 has 3. The internal layout needs rework
The general outlook is the same except the Mk 2 has a welded hull while the Mk1 has not.
The side skirts does not have the step up notch.
