Title: 1/100 Mechwarrior Marauder (pod Glaug)
Description: my simple diorama

giantmecha - August 4, 2008 03:45 PM (GMT)
Hi all, just posting a simple picture of my mechwarrior marauder diorama, this mecha is actually identical to the macross pod glaug. so I took liberties with the paint job and decals to make it a mechwarrior marauder.

this is my first dio, and its done using can spray and hand painted. I didn't know about getting rid of seam lines...so some of it is still visible....the back even worse...haha malu to show...

Nothing to malu about Giantmecha. All of us make minor mistakes and in fact most of us still do, well I know I still make them.

The overall dio has a nice composition. If I've read the storyline correctly the Mecha is attacking the 2 soldiers. Having the mecha look down on the soldiers is good as it gives that "Big bad robot gonna squash you puny humans" feel to it. If your looking to improve this further I would put figures which are firing at the mecha with one of them squatting down and looking up to emphasize the height effect of the mecha. Alternatively you could also have one firing and another soldier running away in fear. Having the mecha point one of his blasters on the soldiers would be good too. This would make the dio more dynamic.

Just my 2 cts though. Thanks for sharing this one with us. Do keep them coming.

Nice IS (I guess?) Marauder GM. That diorama reminds of me of all the poor infantrymen I squished in Mechwarrior 3 PC game!

giantmecha - August 5, 2008 04:55 AM (GMT)
I'll definitely add in more infantry men like you said.... its a smashing idea... give it a bit more panic in the dio... maybe thinking to add in a fallen lamp post or phone pole... but I also need to work on my photography... the pics very unclear lah...

Building diorama is always fun!! I like your concept with the military figures... it reminded me of the classic Macross scene!!

Those guys are fried for sure LOL

Nice work :)

Another angle you can try is, maybe you could make use of the upper floor of the building by putting one or two chaps in an ambush position say maybe holding a bazooka or antimecha missile launcher or some sort of BFG in a ready to fire position. It could be something like the guys on the ground are sort of baiting (cannon fodder really but at least they get fried for a reason ) the mech whilst the guys on top are the 'killers'.

nice weathering effect! i especially like the floor and the sewerage cover! ^_^

think the mecha is too near the soldiers. if can make the distance longer, i think it helps to build up the tension even more. now is almost a "sure die" situation.

Just my two cents worth ^_^

Hi Guys, back again after taking in all your c & c and putting it into work. Pls find the new and improved Mechwarrior Marauder (Merc Medusans) dio as per the below:

front view diorama, added 2 infantry man one kneeling and one running into the scene with some heavy backup firepower. touched up the abandoned building and added lamp post

added this infantry man with a shocked look on his face. added a fallen street sign in front of this guy too. so the scene is kinda like... giant mech burst out of abandon building, bricks fly everywhere, street sign falls, all these infantrymen kinda unprepared for the action.

added windows, signboard, and some event posters and promo posters to the abandoned building.

drama shot of all the infantrymen. Initially wanted to add an infantryman with a bazooka on the first floor, but decided to go with the running backup instead, easier to interpret the drama this way. plus the guy in the first floor was somewhat obscured and was afraid ppl might miss it.

just for the fun of it I replaced the current Marauder which I built out of the box with another Marauder which I heavily modified to look more consistent with the mechwarrior version.

This guy is also a Merc version from the Grey Death Legion

This Marauder is for another dio, it is still un-weathered, arm alignment slightly upwards in this shot, gotta re-adjust that later, I built this guy standing up more upright so he looks taller where as the old one was more crouched and looking at the infantrymen.

front view of the dio, as you can see I've changed the 'face' of the original Marauder, increased the size of the back thrusters, modded the top cannon, added the shoulder plates, and modded the arm weapon sys.

right side view, oh, I also drilled out the 3 exhaust pods and put in wire mesh for a more realistic effect. made the cock pit area accessible too with an open hatch but I'll use that for the next dio.

top side view.

thanks for all your C&C as it has really made my dio much much better, any further C&C from all the sifus out there welcome.

GM,
good attempt and a few comments for you to consider:

1) It needs more debris and dust to give it a more convincing look given the amount of destruction around. Be generous on the ground, next to all the structures and the legs of the mecha.
2) If you can get the heads to look up to the cockpit, it will be more dramatic!
3) signages makes the dio more realistic but you may need to reconsider their position and also whenter they should be weathered further.
4) The mecha seems a bit off balanced as it is a pose in motion but not exactly at the end of a movement where the dramatic poses are usually found.
5) the colour of the fallen bricks may need another rethink to blend them with the building. If its bricks, it should be a clay coloured mix. If its stonework, it doesn't blend well here on a plastered wall finished building.

Cheers

GM..

I like It ..mixed SF and military...my kind of diorama..

aggree with Loo..get the heads to look up to the cockpit, it will be more dramatic...

giantmecha - December 2, 2008 02:01 PM (GMT)
thanks for your comments, I never really weathered the roads, bricks and buildings come to think of it.

so dust up the roads and grey up the bricks a bit? maybe some water marks around the signages too I think...

GM,

Nice work on the dio! I like the overall look of the sdene, with the debris and the battle worn look. Makes me want to complete the Tieren dio that I have lying around my work bench.
