Title: 1/350 Tamiya Fletcher

squealus - July 8, 2008 01:23 PM (GMT)
Here are some pics of my latest build, completed in less than 3 weeks for the Australian Model Expo 2 weeks ago.

I detailed the ship with accessories from Voyager, L'Arsenal and Flagship models.

Building the Voyager Mk 37 director:
I was initially flabbergasted by the instructions. How to put all that together?

Here's how I managed: Keep the foundation piece attached to the fret and build over it

Min, fantastic work again here.
The PE parts really does wonders.
BTW, how big is your completed armada to date?
Hope to get an article from you soon for MalaysiaScaleModelling.com!

Hi Loo,

Thanks for your comments.

So far I've built about 25 ships to varying degrees of detail since I took up ship modelling 5 years ago. My vision is going funny now, will upscale to 1/350 with all those great kits being released.

Here are more pics:

Funnels: Caps drilled out, handrails added, scratchbuild ship's horn on top of funnel 1, and floater net basket attached to platform on Funnel 2.

Voyager 20 mm Oerlikons and L'Arsenal ammo boxes. The gun barrels were WAY too long, about as long as the 5 in guns.

Painting the hull:

I decided to mask and spray the complicated camouflage pattern. The pattern in the Tamiya instructions aren't 100% accurate. The same goes for the patterns depicted in the Warship Perspectives and Shipcraft books on the Fletcher. Fortunately, there are plenty of good quality photos available on line showing the camouflage scheme clearly.

I decided to hand brush the superstructure camouflage. It was simply too difficult to mask off some of the areas. Additionally, the Testors Acrylics I was using hand brushed beautifully, unlike many othe acrylic brands.

At this point, I ran out of time to take photos. Weathering and rigging took place in the 5 hours before entry into competition. Needless to say, I didn't sleep too much.

Completed model shown on Warships forum.

Min, nice job all the way.

Any chance you could provide a link to the warships forum?

BTW, hope you fared well at the expo.

Hi Poohbear,

I meant the Warships and Aircraft Carrier section on this forum.

I got a second placing at the competition. First placed was a 1/35 scale S-Boot! (Imagine judging 1/32 scale aircraft vs a 1/350 aircraft!) Still happy with the result given the small amount of time invested.
