Title: Where Are They?
Description: AMT Ertle Speeder Bike Dio

Hi Guys,

Fancy me in the sci fi section.
This is the only dio I've done for sci fi and it comes from one of the Star Wars movies. It's the chase scene amongst the huge redwood trees featuring the Speeder Bike and its rider looking for the little critters that inhabit these woods.

Ever since I did this Dio, everyone's been asking how I did the tree trunk. The other day I was rumaging through some old photographs and discovered pictures that I had taken of the building stages of this dio. They weren't in digital format so I scanned them. In the photo below, you'll see that the trunk is made made from compressed foam split in sections to form the curvature of the trunk. Other pieces were added for the extentions of the roots and base of the tree.

Close up of the rider and wire support.

This picture has the trunk coated with a layer of plaster of which you can see the container. You will also notice how the wire support has been firmly secured to the basewith nails and bent at different angles for greater support.
If you notice there is a hole at one of the root edges for the wire to pop up from.

The next photo shows the rider and the speeder bike ready for painting.

Close up of the rider which was extensively re-worked to get the right pose as he turns and leans over to look around. Features that had to be re-worked and modified was the helmet, face mask, waist, right hand and his laser pistol on his ankle. I accidently made his hand a bit oversized as you can clearly see here. When it was painted black it wasn't that noticable unless pointed out.

Basically the kit in terms of todays standards is pretty crude but with perseverance, a bit of skill and lots of imagination it can be made into quite a nice presentation.

I'll post more pictures of the finished dio once I take them. Hope you liked it.

Richard.

Those 'little critters' would be the ewok.

Be nice to have one peeking out from behind the bushes. :D

to me i think the idea of hiding the supporting wire is great...

but now sci-fi kit mostly gundam has come out a supportive stand with HIGHLY DETAILED design.. and it is big too... i think it's not so great lah...
