Title: Starwars - Star Destroyer
Description: Imperial II Class
koowilliams - May 21, 2008 03:33 PM (GMT)
Right... i've spent most of my time working on this giant. Scratch building it now without scale. Just measure up to one meter in lengh. I've started doing my research like way back like months, longer than I can remember. Then I started drawing the outline and the guideline for the structure and size.

only recently I manage to find some extra time to continue this ship.

the internal support structure is basically built from hard card. Portion of it is the BW mounting board and some of it is those board ppl use it for HOUSE modeling. support everything by the X joint with hot glue gun...

The outer layer of the ship... these are just the tops... it would need two more of those for the bottom... made out using large piece of 1mm pla-plate.

This is the snap fit result. Size comparison with our ordinary CD-R
The internal structure is sturdy enough to support itself and also the body without bending...
Im now working on the drawing of the tower.

hi william,
nice to see u back to the scene!! somemore with this stunning project!!
Btw, i have mentioned to some members b4 to have a Scifi Group build in the year end event!!! need to talk to those sponsors!!
anyone show interest? Old or new build which not participate in any competitions are welcomed!! :P
koowilliams - May 26, 2008 02:04 AM (GMT)
thanks for the encouraging words, guys...
after this is finish... i'll be more than happy to join this in the exhibit list in future society event... IF allowed...
Silantra - May 26, 2008 05:17 AM (GMT)
great to see u around once again bro...
and this time u showed up with this scratchbuilding job... very impressive work...
good luck bro..
koowilliams - May 26, 2008 03:18 PM (GMT)
just got the correct shape and size of the bridge...

another side with different lighting... (actualy it is just the flash light)

everything is still very flimsy now... as you can see the whole thing is pulled together by strips of masking tape and bluetack... will work on the supportive structure inside the bridge next round....
druid_99 - May 27, 2008 12:27 AM (GMT)
Good progress there Koowilliams...
I'm waiting to see how you are going to add the small-small details like the turbolazer cannons, the surface details and the hangar details...
Keep up the good work. :D
koowilliams - May 27, 2008 01:55 AM (GMT)
Guys... anyone of you have any idea how to create....

I know cutting multiple triangle and put them up together is kinda impossible as my cutting skill is not that precise...
druid_99 - May 27, 2008 02:09 AM (GMT)
Well, I sort of knew that you will be asking question on the shield generator. Well, if it is me, I'll use a circular thing (eg; ping pong ball, but in your case it will be too big) and use it as a guidance. Cut all the triangles and glue it together with the sphere as a guidance.
Just my five cents lah..
koowilliams - May 27, 2008 02:21 AM (GMT)
i thought of that method as well... but trying not to cut the triangles... but since you thought of that too... i think that's the way to do it then...
back to the drawing...

Ya lah... that is the shield generator... That's why in the movie Return of The Jedi all the X-Wings and A-Wings target that area first before the B-Wing finish it off... :D
The tangki air for fresh water is located somewhere in the middle of the main hull of the Star Destroyer...
koowilliams - May 27, 2008 03:20 AM (GMT)
man... i was too young to understand what the story is about when i watch the old 3 episode years back, needless to say the understanding of how the star destroyer works and got destroyed... all i remember was the props like darth vader costume, his red light sabers, at-at walker, star destroyer and all the fighters plane... those machines sure stay really firm in my mind...
RX-78-2 - May 27, 2008 03:21 AM (GMT)
try to find some origami online.
there is something similar to that!!
Silantra - May 27, 2008 05:22 AM (GMT)
akaakakak...
they got fresh water tank too ke Imran??
i thought they have the technologies to produced water without having to put the water into a tank...
thanks anyway, know i knew it's not a water tank...

Bro,
Sometime we are trying to short cut in scratch build.
That’s a quit complicated task, I think you have no choice. You’ve to cut the triangle by using a template that can make by using plastic card. Get the right angle just to make sure to get the proper shape when its join together. As for the triangle shape, 1mm plastic is recommended, because it’s easier to cut with.
Don’t try to cut plastics in 1 go, slice 2-3 times and break it slowly. Attach all the triangle shape that has cut and use paper clip to hold it together. Sand the cutting edge, to keep seize accordingly.
Hope that’s will help.
2 cents

druid_99 - May 27, 2008 08:40 AM (GMT)
If it was me, I will follow Dremel's tip because although it is time consuming, it is the best method to get the shape. The sphere can be used as a guidance (as I mentioned previously).
Koowilliams: Although I'm not a "mati keras"/die hard fan, I'm a fan of the final trilogy of the Star Wars Saga so I knew some minor2 things on the Star Destroyer, the Corellian Corvette, Medical Frigate, etc... etc...
Silantra: Well, eventhough the Star Wars is a Sci-Fi genre, there are still some things that is not that futuristic like the need of fresh water supply... remember, the Star Destroyer is even equipped with the garbage disposal system (that's why Han Solo's Millenium Falcon managed to get camouflaged with the garbage when the Star Destroyer dispose it before getting into Hyperspace).
By the way, I have actually tried to do a cut-away version of the Star Destroyer but stopped half way because of some problem on the assemply part... that's why I know that there are fresh water container somewhere in it...

"He is not as forgiving as I am..."
sorry couldn't resist, Seroiusly though awesome project.
The origami idea is interesting. You could draw it out and fold it..maybe use really thin plastic card.
RX-78-2 - May 27, 2008 01:51 PM (GMT)
there is a lot of scratch building using origami as a base mockup, then use pla card to make the final shape.
so this is what i can think about it when i first see the shape. ^_^
koowilliams - May 28, 2008 12:59 AM (GMT)
now still searching for the paper model site... but anyway, i guess that "tangki air" will be the last thing to do...
I'm working on the drawing of the bottom part now... the HANGAR....
thanks for all the suggestions, guys...
beachbum - May 28, 2008 07:26 AM (GMT)
Its good to see you have some spare time now to get back to modelling. A grand start too.
Anyway I was thinking about that mutiple sided thingy (tangki air) and your origami idea is a good one Koowilliams. Not sure how big it gets but ever considered looking around toy shops for something similar.
The only other crazy idea would be to make a ball out of Tamiya putty and use a "origami" template of say one or two triangles and press it into the putty while its semi-hardened. Finally to get the correct shapes you can fine tune it when its totally dry by sanding. Might turn out to be more work though. :P
Good luck on the project and we are looking forward to more progress pics. May the Force be with you.

Hope it help!
koowilliams - May 29, 2008 06:30 PM (GMT)
i've decided to start things from the bottom.... so currently im working on the hangar now...
druid, here's the start...

It is obviously not complete.. i eventually ran out of styrene rod of the same size. only gonna continue when i got more of those supplies in my hand.

I've left some gap on the side so that, HOPEfully the light can go thru.
having come to this stage, only to realise it is not deep enough, but depth can be added quite easily...
that's all for now...
PoohBear - May 30, 2008 12:02 AM (GMT)
Nice work!
Going by the studio model pic earlier, there's tons of surface detail to add and this will give you hours and hours of fun. :D
Keep it coming.
druid_99 - May 30, 2008 12:30 AM (GMT)
Good work there Koowilliams. The hangar looks good but you're correct on the depth for the hangar, it needs a little bit more of depth because the Tie Fighters are all located in the hangar as well.
The big question is... are you going to scratchbuild the crane arm as well? :D
koowilliams - May 30, 2008 12:57 AM (GMT)
Jason, I suppose you mean months and months of "fun"... :D
Druid, i'm confident that i can scratchbuilt the crane, but it will not be in a X-joined crane structure... perhaps a CLAMP like shape thing...

Should have qualified that I meant hours and hours of fun per square mm.

KW.
I will see whether some of the 3D software I am using can simplify the drawing for you to break them down to diamonds so that you can do a fold and stick routine.

THAAAAAAAAAAANKH YOU..!!!
RX-78-2 - May 31, 2008 04:00 AM (GMT)
japan got 1 origami software that will unfold the 3D model.
but still can't find the 'temporary' license!!!
koowilliams - May 31, 2008 04:16 AM (GMT)
WE-CHAN... i've look thru some origami and paper model site, but found none that shows the folding of the tangki... they just made a circular impression by slotting two circle cut shape together...
rtfoe - June 3, 2008 04:27 PM (GMT)
William,
So far what you've done is magnifiscent.
As for the 'bola' Dremel's method is the best bet. To keep it in shape you have to first get a ball (plastic preferably) of the right size and stick the triangular plates on it...OR...have circular skeleton supports like you find in ship models before the planking is placed.
From what I see is that the inside supports will be key to a perfect sphere. It can be cut from thin plasticard. All these supports will have the same circumference. I hope I'm making sense. You'll see it better in a drawing. I'll sketch one up roughly and post it later.
Richard.

Williams,
patience my young apprentice,
I am flattening out the 3D sphere at the moment. Will email you the diagram soon.
