Title: Naval & Marine Aviation Group Build
Description: 6 & 7 December 2008
f-4dablemodels - May 11, 2008 02:08 PM (GMT)
I wish to thank everyone who participated in the F-4 50th Anniversary event by building a F-4 model, or helped in one way or another.
While the F-4 Phantom II is without question an aviation legend, it belongs to a far more important group of aircraft.
The F-4 was originally built for the U.S. Navy under a fleet defense fighter requirement, but was also adopted for use by the U.S. Air Force and a host of countries.
It plays an important part in the history of Naval Aviation.
I love military aviation, as I'm sure almost all you do, but there has always been that extra bit of wow factor in seeing a Navy plane launching off a carrier deck and trapping (making an arrested landing) on one. Kind of awe-inspiring if you ask me.
With that in mind, the organizers of the F-4 event would like to introduce to you the next event for 2008:
The Naval & Marine Aviation Group Build
In comparisson to the F-4 Event, this will be a whale of an event, which will be held in December 2008.
We, the organizers are pleased to announce that the
Northrop Grumman Corporation, a name that has been synonymous with Naval Aviation since its inception (think Wildcat, Hellcat, Avenger, Tomcat, et al) is one of the sponsors of the event.
Some of you may recall that they backed us up during the F-14 Retirement Party held in October 2006.
Well, we hope to see you participate in this event.
More information and details will follow in the days and weeks to come!
enghui - May 11, 2008 03:49 PM (GMT)
good News indeed. We are very fortunate as modellers to have another event to look forward to.
Hmmm, from a Malaysian angle probably the Albatros would qualify.
Maybe Bud Bilko shuld finish his for this event. :)

Ermm the HU-16 was operated by TUDM, so strictly speaking, it's neither Navy nor Marines. Anyway, if one wants a Malaysian angle, there are Wasps, Fennecs and Super Lynxs.
xamel1975 - May 12, 2008 01:30 AM (GMT)
Ah, another group build. My partially built Osprey is begging to be completed. My F-14 Jolly Roger is still in box and so is my Sea King.
Looking forward to this one!
f-4dablemodels - May 12, 2008 02:18 AM (GMT)
The Naval & Marine Aviation Group Build is aimed at covering the entire spectrum of naval & marine aviation, and will include:
all Naval & Marine aircraft - both fixed & rotary wing, from Avenger to Zero
all Naval vessels from which these naval & marine aircraft operate from
all land based Naval & Marine aviation assets
It is not limited to any specific period or nationality, and will cover pre-war, WW II, Korea, Vietnam, all the way to the present day.
Basically, the common denominator is that it should have the legend 'NAVY' or 'MARINES' stencilled (or decaled) on somewhere.
I hope all of you WWII, naval & rotary wing modellers will find this group build right up your street.

will movie, tv, & anime related aircraft from iron eagle, top gun, executive decision, macross zero, yukikaze fairy air force, battle of midway, final countdown, stealth, JAG, etc. be allowed? Most of the time its actual aircraft with fictitious logos.
cheers

druid_99 - May 12, 2008 04:30 AM (GMT)

Sci-fi - sorry, it's too far out of the scope
Naval aviation related movie subjects - possibly, but we'll see.

Jason, while CVs, CVNs, CVLs, LPHs and LHAs are obviously in this category, does it include ships which carry spotter planes eg BBs and cruisers?
Scratch - May 12, 2008 06:58 AM (GMT)
Have been out of the group builds for too long, will try to put in an kit this time round.

Well, the way we have defined it, as long as it is related to Naval & Marine aviation, it applies.
So, yes a BB or cruiser or a DDG that carries a SH-60B would qualify.

:D hmmm , just a coincidence, my mini project is to cover all available F-14 squadrons ... these are my 7th and 8th. VF-101 and VF-14

In line with the Naval & Marine Aviation Group Build, I would like to recommend this book:
U.S. NAVAL AIR SUPERIORITY: Development of Shipborne Jet Fighters 1943-1962 by Tommy H. Thomason
Summary of the book:As World War II came to a close, piston-powered fighter aircraft were at their zenith, and Navy fighters, such as the Grumman F6F Hellcat and Vought Corsair, dominated the skies over the Pacific. As these fighter designs reached their peak, a new propulsion technology was being developed that held great promise. When introduced, the first jet aircraft were underpowered, and in many ways inferior to propeller-driven aircraft of the time. Naval Air Superiority examines the Navy’s internal struggle to adapt the jet engine to its style of warfare as well as the development and evolution of carrier-borne fighters and their airframes and engines, from the closing days of World War II through Vietnam.
For the first time, U.S. Naval Air Superiority profiles the turbulent design and development stage of the Navy’s carrier-based jet fighter program. From the successful designs, such as the Fury, Banshee, Crusader, and Phantom II, to the also-rans, like the Fireball, Demon, Pirate, and Cutlass, the Navy’s needs are measured against contractor and political demands and the limits of the evolving engine and aerodynamic technologies of the day.
This book includes engine cut-aways, aircraft comparison diagrams, and details the safety improvements made to aircraft carriers to enable higher speed and high-gross-weight jet operations. It really takes you back to where it all began, way, way before aircraft like the F-14 & F/A-18 and gives you an insight into how jet powered naval aviation developed over time to become what it is today.
Limited stock of this book is now available at HHQ.

Fuyoh, another very interesting group build . Will definitely join. I will be looking out for my 1/72 hase marines harrier AV-8. Need to dig out from stash to look for other unbuilt kits, maybe a 1/48 Tamiya corsair F-4U.
Got 1st prize ar? Maybe a ride on the USA's navy jet fighter with catapult launch?

Loo CK - May 16, 2008 03:59 AM (GMT)
I was thinking of doing the 350 Nimitz
f-4dablemodels - May 16, 2008 04:24 AM (GMT)
The organizers are working on the categories.
Tentatively (and most likely), the categories will be laid out along specific eras of Naval Aviation history, for example:
1. World War II
2. Korea - the introduction of jet power
3. Vietnam
4. 80's to present day
I'm hoping to tie in each category era to one another so it forms a model display that highlights the history of Naval Aviation.
As also announced on 10/5/08 at the F-4 event, there will be a special Grumman award, which will be for Grumman-built aircraft.
f-4dablemodels - May 30, 2008 05:33 AM (GMT)
While the organizers formalize the structure of the event, we are please to announce that Hobby HQ will be offering additional discounts on all Naval & Marine aircraft models to all would-be participants of the Naval & Marine Aviation Group Build.

lan,
yup..except for the 1/72s, yang lain boleh wingfold..
that hasewaga kit is the latest but when i opened the box, it was an old mold with new decal set... so many flash and details are basic especially in the wing fold mechanism...
will try to pose the wing upright.. one stupid question..izit logical for A-7E to pose one wing fold, the other unfold??

I don't think it would be logical, unless they were fixing a problem with the wing.
I guess the A-7A/B/C/E would have powered wingfold mechanism, so the wings would fold and unfold more or less in unison.
Nice collection of A-7's. Glad to see more folks interested in this jet.
The Royal Thai Navy has some ex-USN A-7E's & TA-7C's, if you're looking for regional tastes.

Jason,
thanks for the info..
so i guessed it is either both wing fold or not...
personally, i still like US taste coz i wanna do the early corsair scheme, where at that time, colorfull marking is allowed..
thanks bro

This is so cool!
carrier deckmaybe we could do one, looks simple enough. It need not be correct in terms of correct aircraft in the airwing etc, it would be just for interest :)

What scale? 1/72 or 1/144? Or 1/32? :P

Des,

We decided this based on what was the most available kit out there!
Its the Academy F14A which if I am not mistaken, 2 availbale in HHQ and 2 in MH at the moment. A few of us have the kit at home too.
Kenny G can help out with the decals and catapult shield. Meanwhile I will try to get the base outline done with the 1:350 Nimitz class kit.
It would be great if there are at least 6 birds.
