Title: Wave Zoids 1/20 Road Skipper
Description: An imbalance attempt

rayloke - April 23, 2008 04:48 AM (GMT)
Hi, been in this forum for quite some time but seldom post anything. This's the first time posting after being thrilled by so many of the amazing works found here. C & C are almost welcome! :D

This is a project i did in end of 2006; basically is outta box build. just took away the motor, and filled up with a little details. scratch built the machine gun (Oversized i think, wonder how the poor birdy vehicle's going to stand once it started firing :P )there are quite a few mistakes i made here, mostly because of lack of careful planning. Weathering also a little overdone and fake...... :(

Looks good overall... I only have some concerns on the gattling gun on the side though. I think the Zoid will be pushed to face backward if that gun fires...

P/S: I've read somewhere that the A-10 Warthog gattling gun is so powerful that it reduces the plane's speed when the gun is fired... I don't know what will happen to this Zoid when the gun is fired. :D

Looks good. Try taking care of some of the visible seams for a better finish.

And nice attempt at scratchbuilding the gun. Bring on the rain! :D

:D

Good work there rayloke..although I'm not so good in this robot-robot things..but still it's a good finish..just..minor the shiny parts.. :D eg:soldier hands..weathering..it's ok to me..may be you can blend it with oil wash

druid_99 : I think what's left is only the zoid nor the armourer and soldier

Yeah, my friends were laughing so loud and he thought only the two legs will remain while everything would be blown away: both the enemies and the pilot himself!

PoohBear: yup, i agree. thanks for the comment!

Blackheart: thanks for the advice. yeah minor things i overlooked, which are enhanced once is photographed.

Hi Rayloke,

No comments from me as they've all been covered by my fellow modelers.

Like to say you've done a great job on this vignette. Not your first I presume as you've tackled most of the modeling techics like weathering and scratchbuilding. Very different and unusual subject.

Hope to see more of your builds. Everybodies forgotten that the bird is mechanical and should've been designed for such a big gun. :D exercises the imagination doesn't it?

Richard

rtfoe: Hi nice meeting you.Actually i m still in process of learning and experimenting stuff.

Initially i was in another forum which is dedicated to gundam (mostly). However, when i started to browse this forum, i was so blown away by the stuff you guys posted here. It's like a new level of excellence.

Hence i hope can get more comments, especially criticism, to improve le :P

Interesting work. The kit actually makes a good dio subject.

The dio is nicely composed as you've given a diagonal view of the model which makes a lot of difference because this is a kit that has an interesting 360 degree view. Not sure if it will help you in future projects but its sometimes interesting to set a model against a contrasting color for the groundwork. For example putting this kit in a brown or red desert setting against a slope with footprints behind may be more interesting. Or land based units will look unusual if put in or around a water groundwork (i.e swamp) whereas a water unit may look interesting on a land based groundwork. Just something to think about.

Do share with us more of your work Rayloke

beachbum: Thanks for your comments! :D

I think i understand what u r saying, but just cant really visualize it..... hmm mebbe i should look into other people's work first. I think this's something i definitely overlooked last time.... ;)

Again thank you so much!

Nice work Ray Loke! Havent got into the 1/24 scale Zoids, I have been trying very very hard to avoid the poison but your work is really quite inspiring. Keep up the good work.

Rayloke,

just a few observations, if you don't mind:

plus points:
1) the metal finish is good especially the variation on the exhaust area.
If you can maintain the overall feel of the metal parts in this consistency, it will be a real stunner.
2)weathering of the plates is good with the peeled off look working very well.
3) there is nothing wrong with the composition as I think with a bit of imagination, the gun need not be of a mechanical gun but could well be a laser/ photon blaster, hence no kickback. Alternatively the bird might just have an alternative firing position like in Scopedogs.
4) the humanoid figure in the composition is a real plus offering some sense of scale and human drama to the vignette.
5)the colour composition of the pilot and bird works well

the critic ( only if you want to bring this to competition levels ):
1) take your time and be a bit more discipline in the construction clean up especially on flash and seams. Some of them are showing.
2) You may want to also give a little bit more artistic licensing to the variation of the metallic tones, eg, the more robust movable parts like neck and legs may be a darker shade, body armor in lighter shades, etc. This gives the FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION dictum more emphasis and will provide a lot of depth to the colour range.
3) Like the previous vignette, you need to treat the groundwork with the same amount of care in process like the kit itself as they can kill a really good build if neglected.
4) The pilot is in an interrupted pose. Maybe the bird need to reflect that as to have a confused look rather than in mid movement pose. A very useful trick which Joe Kubert and also the great Jack Kirby advised is that all dramatic comic artwork always shows the pose at the end of a movement arc.
5)Blending in the bird into the terrain is important to show that it belongs in the elements.

Overall, I see great potential in your modelling direction as it offers a very fresh approach to the usual stuff. Its great to see you experimenting and who knows, one day I may just join you to mod a few!

Cheers and happy modelling.

kindredd: Thanks for the encouragment! Yeah i think this series is really fun to work with. the only draw back is Wave only did 5 kits and stopped (I think the sale wasnt good enough)

Loo CK: Ha ha! i didnt mention i was careless and lack of discipline/patience in planning, but these are the things that hit me after i finished the kit. I guess u can really see thru it!

Yeah u are absolutely right about careful planning and discipline and patience. and also thanks for pointing out things that i overlooked. I think i agree with your suggestion of variety of metallic tone. I always wonder why "there's something missing" in the kit, now i guess i know, is too monotonous! thanks for pointing it out!

Yeah, now i learn to treat building the base as important as building the kit! especially after my other kit. (again wanna cry already.....)

As for the pose, it's funny and embarassing. i pre painted everything but i didnt test fit the pilot. only after all are done, i realised the pilot can't fit into the cockpit! :o i dont blame Wave, it's all my "too eager, cant wait to finish" bad habbit...... :P

Thank you so much for the comments!
