Title: 2008 Merdeka Group Build
Description: survey and planning

Loo CK - March 5, 2008 05:31 AM (GMT)
Dear Patriots,
for those who are interested to kick start this, can we have a show of hands as to what you have planned as it would be great to have a good show of kits and we can do the publicity with the local newspapers early.
There is a plan to get in touch with the national dailies to do a series of features to run up before the actual event. Perhaps 6 week end features to touch on modelling right uo to specific Merdeka themes.
For 2008, 31st August is a Sunday which will be great to hold a 2 day exhibition starting 30th August.
Can I have some suggestions, thoughts on what you would like to see for this year?

I suggest we try to include more non-military subjects in this year's display. I think it is easier for a non modeler to relate to subjects that they are familiar with. The problem with this idea is that most if not all the subject require scratch build.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm ON.....

1) 1/48 Tamiya Buffalo
2) 1/48 F-5F
3) 1/700 E-class Destroyer...maybe

I'm considering a 2nd take on our PARA Scorpion but I cannot commit just yet. Still sourcing for a base kit.

I think YG has a good idea there. Of course as he says some scratchbuilding will be required with most non-military ones. Identifying interesting ones which minimizes scratchbuilding will be the challenge. We may even be able to make it a group build where everyone does a little part of it.

So .. any suggestion for a theme for this year

I really hope Richard's R & R would be ready for this year's MGB. B)

Well, I'm interested in joinig as well but any ideas on non-military subjects? Since most displays will surely be military subjects, I think it will be best to list down any non-military subjects that came across our minds and list it here. Maybe after that, anyone has an idea or wants to build from the list of ideas can contribute for the non-military subjects.

Let me start:

One off:
1) Malacca Beca/trishaw
2) Mini bus (I would really want to do this if I have the diagram... )
3) STAR LRT/PUTRA LRT/ERL
4) Motorcycle/bicycle of the bread seller (the ones with a lot of brads that blocks vision  )
5) ...

Diorama:
1) Kids playing teng-teng/batu seremban/galah panjang
2) Rubber tappers tapping rubber sap
3) Spinning tops
4) Wayang pacak
5) Wayang kulit
6) ...

There's some interesting ideas there Imran that is definitely worth exploring. As for the theme for this year Loo there are a few possibilities:

1. Unity
This fits in with a multi-racial, multi background of SFTPMS and this forum.

2. Progress
A before and after scenario, i.e. an old Proton Saga parked next to the latest Proton, Telekoms then and now, KTM with its steam engines and today's modern KTM with its diesel locos, a PLUS highway with modern cars next to the original kampung road with bicycles and people walking.
This theme has the potential of roping in corporate sponsors.

3. History
This theme reminds the audience of the sacrifice of those that have come before us. Can be both military and non-military. i.e. WWII, Emergency, etc. (military) and rubber tapping, M'sia 1st astronaut, etc. (non-military)

I'm sure I can think of a few more provided I get some potty time, uninterrupted potty time to be exact and preferably with piped in music and airconditioning.

Just to add to Imran's list for dios, here's one that fits the Unity theme as well as the progress theme.

" Half the dio shows an old, shaky wooden bridge with one Chinese kid about to jump into the river while in the stream there is a Malay and Indian kid. The other half has a brand new metal or concrete bridge attached to the wooden one and has the same 3 kids but now they've grown up reminiscing about the good old days."
We could call it "Some things Change but Some Don't"

There's a mini museum at our KTM station, if anyone is interested to do this subject. I got some photos of the displays there in my camera phone.

Wow you all remind me so many thinglah….Great idea guys, maybe we can pick one subject and build in group. ;)

Hi Guys,

They're all fantastic ideas. I've got two cents to add onto the ideas.

I thought one way to mix military and civilians would be to create a Merdeka parade. Perhaps a section with a multi racial crowd viewing the parade of military eguipment like the UN armoured vehicles and the ferret. Imagine the vehicle commanders at attention and saluting. The crowd can be interesting with some taking pictures and kids piggy backing onto adult shoulders...this attempt should be carried out by the figure guys in the group build. The street can be festooned with flags...very patriotic.

Just my two cents. The vehicles are already built.

Richard.

Another excellent idea there Richard. It can include all the military as well as non-military subject. One thing though... it sure going to be a lot of figures to be build and paint... :D

Yup the figures will pose a problem but if we commisioned a few figure builders (hope they're interested and would help by getting involved) then we might get something going.

Again, I think what Loo needs from all of us is commitment and realistic deliverables. With a show of hands on again rather than lip service is required to make the MGB a success.

The comittee ought to look into planning the exhibit to maximise visibility for every kits potential. Sometimes cramming everything together may not neccessarily make the numbers but well placed singular pieces may suffice. Precious volunteers would greatly be appreciated.

Trying to use up my one cents before April.

Richard.

The inputs are much appreciated guys,

At the moment, I am still waiting for more suggestions because after that, we need to piece up a credible working paper to the press to ensure that they 'take the bait' to give us the support.

So, some human drama interest is always good to tug at the hearstriing or else we will need to think up a creative approach to sell the theme chosen.

At the moment the suggestions so far are good but need a lot of scratchbuilding skills. As for my self, I will still try to do a few pieces a year on the Malaya WW2 campaign ( because the choice of ready kits are there with minimal work) and now leading into the Confrontation period. Those interested can pen in their suggestion. As a start, we already have the Brewster Buffalo airfield ( likely Sg Petani) and I have started to put together my 1:700 Force Z as a matt model group ( ie: only base coat for the moment, like a movie prop model ). Hopefully by the deadline I will have that and a British based dio completed.

Off the top of my head, a few interesting models would have been:
1) Lt Adnan's exploit using Airfix multipose British 8th Army and Jap Infantry
2) Scratchbuilding the raising of the flag in Std Merdeka ( one lone figure with the flagpole)
3) rubber tapper
4) tin miner
5) paddy planting

We could theme it 'the birth of a nation' with scenes from the WW2 up to say late 60s?
