Title: 1/700 Aoshima Ijn Tone

squealus - February 10, 2008 12:13 PM (GMT)
Here are pics on my latest build, progressing slowly since Oct last year. I've decided to follow the footsteps of Jeff Lin, and superdetail it with any available accessory. I've used the 1/100 model in the Gakken publication on the Tone as my primary reference.

Min,I'd just enough headache to add a PE set on my 1/700 Kirishima :( ,But the way i saw your progress, its seem like to add some more headache if i want to build like yours. You're an expert Min,keep it up ....can't wait to see the next progress.....I've to learn a lot from you bro ;)

Hi Dremel,

Thanks for the comment, your PE work looks fine. Here are more of my pics...

Adding hull plating and various strakes from strip styrene and porthole covers. Like the Americans, the Japanese found portholes a liability in combat and sealed them up. There is no easy way to do this in 1/700 scale. I used PE from Lion Roar.
Degaussing cable also added, using Lion Roar PE again.

squealus - March 8, 2008 10:20 AM (GMT)
Hi

Over the years, I've spent a lot buying up various PE sets, mainly from Lion Roar. These are relatively cheap from Hong Kong and each set has enough parts to outfit several ships. I usually buy from Luckymodel, which offers regular discounts and free shipping on Lion Roar too.

For this ship, I have used:

Tom's Modelworks IJN Heavy Cruiser set, bought cheap from Ebay at US$9 (RRP US$18)
White Ensign Models IJN doors 1.95 GBP
Hasegawa IJN Surveying Set 700 yen
Hasegawa IJN Catapult Set 700 yen
Lion Roar 25 mm single AA guns US$7.41
Lion Roar 25 mm twin and triple AA guns US$5.99
Lion Roar Degaussing Cable US$5.99
Lion Roar Sealed portholes US$5.99
Lion Roar Ammo Boxes US$5.29
Lion Roar Ship Davits US$5.99
Lion Roar Type 13 Radar US$8.11
Lion Roar Cable Reels US$5.69
Lion Roar Extra Ladders US$6.57
Lion Roar 5 inch gun barrels US$9.00
Lion Roar triangular perforated plate US$5.99
Lion Roar perforated bar AU$10
(Lion Roar prices quoted from Lucky Model or Hobbyeasy)

That's a lot of sets and money, but all are applicable to any IJN ship, and each set has enough parts for a small fleet of ships.

Min,
looking very good with all the additions.
The hosereels are really good and give it another level of realisms. Should have thought of it for my POW.

I am at the moment building the Fall of Malaya set....
Will post pics when more progress is in.

squealus - March 14, 2008 01:13 PM (GMT)
Hi Loo,

Look forwards to your latest build. Do you intend to build a Force Z diorama? Trumpeter will be releasing a 1/350 Repulse to accompany your 1/350 POW as well.

Those hose reels are a bit too small to appreciate in 1/700 scale, I think.

Min,
what can I say....

I LOVE IT!

Now I can really understand why you chose the TONE for this crazy endeavour. The superdetailing and scope for it is really awesome. Keep it up.

On my end, the POW is constructed, and one E class destroyer too. Pics will come very much later as I need to now finish up my F-4C Phantom for the Phantom anniversary group build in May.

squealus - March 29, 2008 03:01 PM (GMT)
Hi Loo

Thanks for your comments. I can't wait to see your Phantom finished. It's looking very impressive so far.

I think IJN ships make great subjects for super detailing because of the amount of reference material and accessories available. Also the works of super modelers like Jeff Lin are really inspiring.

More pics, test fit prior to painting

Your Tone sure looks like it weighs a "ton"e with all the PE parts.

Looking forward to complete build.

Mix with blue paint and slap on. The Pollyfilla is white, and the blue stain prevents the white from showing up when the surface is damaged or masking tape removed.

Painting the ship:

Sprayed white plastic/metal primer from Tamiya: This was a mistake. Made certain details look too thick
Airbrushed Tamiya Kure Gray: Didn't go too well either. Paint not mixed well enough, airbrushed spattered some thickish globs
Handpainted brass strips
Handpainted linoleum using Xtracolor Signalbraun
Subassembled items added, as well as PE railings
Future coat
Washed with lamp black. umber
Matt coat
Pastels: rust, dull gray

Min,
the ship looks wonderful in the base especially in the off-centered setting.
You are right that the base coat is a little thick! Some of the PE looks a little bit stocky.
Only the riggings left!

Bravo.

rtfoe - April 24, 2008 08:02 AM (GMT)
Everything looks fantastic Min,

I'd have to echo Loos comments on the thick paint, shame though. But from a suitable distance it's okay.

Just one question, is bridge missing a cover or was the Tone equipped with an open top and only covered in foul weather with canvas.

The sea looks real.

Richard.

squealus - April 24, 2008 06:28 PM (GMT)
Hi,

I haven't put the top on the bridge yet. It will get in the way when I start the rigging.
