Title: R & R Is Back
Description: Local Dio of road side fruit stall.

rtfoe - January 28, 2008 04:28 PM (GMT)
Hi Guys,

It's high time I brought back something I quite sort off left hanging. The following are some of the components that are going into this dio.

user posted image

What's a basket got to do with the dio? Well it better fit in as I had to painstakingly piece together strip by strip paper thin plastic sheet to simulate a vege basket used to throw trash at fruit stalls.

user posted image

And ofcourse bananas that will accompany this dio. As you can see they're not quite finished yet. They were made from glueing spices together(Jintan Manis).

user posted image

Next post will see the progress so far of the dio.... See ya...

Richard.

rtfoe - January 28, 2008 04:43 PM (GMT)
The process of the ground work has begun.

I took CK Loos advise when he mentioned that at eye level he thought that both the roof and hoarding shouldn't be the same level of height. It would have been more intersting if one of these items wre proped higher which I have done with the hoarding. Much better don't you think. Thanks Loo.

Amazing man!
Glad to see this kind of "local diorama", really love it so much! ;)

xamel1975 - January 29, 2008 12:55 AM (GMT)
I agree with Blackheart on the realism level of the signage. The setup really gives out the kampong feel.

I'd like to suggest that you put an old bicycle tyre, old slipper (one side only), worn-out rag on the roof top. It would be nice to have a cat up there too, resting.

CP, don't have to go very far to get reference for it, Puchong Old Klang road got a lot. Glad it reminds you of the your Kampong. Where you from by the way?

Blackheart, its 1/35 scale, thanks. Basically the sign is a print out that I made. Got the logos from the net and its dated in the '70s for realism.

ahhow, thanks, I'm not the only one that's done local stuff, look at CP's and Loo's contribution and the guys that did the CP camp big dio.

Xamel, thought about that too, adding to that will be the famous shuttlecock. Thanks.

Koo williams, I want to kill myself for attempting this. I'm worried about pulling off the jungle around the hoarding. Thanks.

Coming up later, close ups and if time permits more progress builds.

Cheers,
Richard.

Kay, you're right about the scale size of the hole. I was nicely cutting away and guessing the scale. Can put a foot in too. Will have to plaster it or re-cut slabs. thanks for the heads up.

Blackheart, I can't beat that wierdo in CSI but I can put a banana in a basket. which means I've to scratch build the basket on the Honda cup. :P

Vince, I'm so old that what ever I build seems like back in the future for quite a lot of you younger ones. Just trying some scenes from the past or re-collections and hope it brings back fond memories for some. Thanks

Richard.

rtfoe - January 29, 2008 05:02 AM (GMT)
The close ups are here.

Starting with the bananas in the box. All these are not painted yet. The bananas recieved a coat of white. The stain from the spice has seeped thru.

user posted image

The table is made from thick card and some balsa. Below is the hoarding with the Malboro ad that was frequently seen in the '70s before the ban.

user posted image

Then you have the culvert made from balsa and coated with plaster.

user posted image

The catchment at the end of every drain you will see along the roads hasn't changed much with the metal grating manhole above, except these days they're missing because of the cost of steel.

user posted image

The next two pictures feature the parts of the house which is the only item that's completely painted, only to add the stuff on the roof.

user posted image

user posted image

The basket will be painted in rattan color and weathered and placed there. Next to it will be a table with drinks, my next stage in the dio.

user posted image

The scratch built Honda cup hasn't recieved attention since the last you guys saw it. I'm going to add a basket and some rear view mirrors and rear lights.

user posted image

user posted image

All ground work isn't finished yet. Only a coating of stained plaster covers the surface.
That's all for now. Q&A anytime. Thanks for viewing.

Richard.

just agreeing with what xamel said earlier abt the slipper and old tire on the roof, will be a great realism...

for me; a mere mortal, this looks very outstanding... so how long has this project progressed?

Well this started somewhere beginning of last year. I wanted to finish it for the Merdeka group build but work commitments got in the way. No deadline now so proceeding at a leisurely pace.

Richard.

beachbum - January 30, 2008 10:53 AM (GMT)
Richard your attention to detail is simply amazing from the nail holes in the planks to the signboard to the bananas. Which kind of brings me to my question, did you scratchbuild them bananas? I've always wanted to add a banana bunch to some of the banana plants I've made in the past but could never quite figure a way to mass produce them easily.

You are killing me with the details Richard, aaargh....just look at the seat on the cupcai and then there is the rattan basket.....I'm just going to have to avoid looking too long at this thread. :)

Thanks CK,

Yup, them bananas are scratch built. Every banana is a grain of jintan manis super glued to a section of tubing, roughly eight to a bunch. Not easy. I mentioned earlier to Dremel how I wished I could buy them ready made. :D
Later I'm adding banana trees to the dio accompanied with perhaps a comb or two of bananas.

Okay next. After what Sil said, I spent the night sanding the tyres. The outcome is slightly better but still thick if to scale.

user posted image

In the process I had to break off the exhaust....can stick back one...no worries.

Then I proceeded to measure the basket for the cupchai. Somebody mentioned bananas in the basket so that's what I'll try to do. Thought I'd add a Pakcik with sarong trying to get on the bike. Hope he doesn't expose anything  just kidding.

Hi guys,

Aiyoh!! HM got me to do many things over the holidays preparing for CNY.
Managed to only do the following....

honemic, here's the reference I followed for the C70. You're right, appaently I got carried away with the tip of the front mudguard and made it too sharp. I was working with a scaled down image and it wasn't clear.
Thanks for the heads up.

I managed to scratch the basket. What you see here is just the dry fitting. I'll attach it after final painting.

Managed to locate the old pictures of the dio in progress for those who are new to this post.
At that stage the house and billboard were still unfinished and were fabricated with thick card. The wooden planks made from ivory card had yet to be added.
The two figures were added to help with scale and are not the intended final figures.

Hi,
Finally some free time to tackle my Honda Cub and apologies for the slow comeback. Well here are the progress pictures so far. I've also put in a Tamiya 35th scale BMW rider for scale effect.

These pictures were taken just prior to painting.

Made them from plastic strip. The slipper was a headache...not easy to twirl the straps. My mistake was to start from the toe end twirl and then stick on either sides of the slipper. I'm going to try the other way...from the sides and ending up at the toe the next time. :P

Okay, the next progress is the second coat of paint and coloring the indicator lights with chrome frame piping. After this I'll coat the gloss areas with future and add number plates.

On close up you can see how rough the detailing is. Best I can do so far for an item that's gonna fit in a dio. Hope the short comings won't be seen that clearly from a respectable distance. :D

Thanks for viewing. Now I can concentrate with the other parts of the Dio. I'm taking Ari's advise and approach each item one at a time so as not to burn out thinking of all the other projects and half built kits.

As always comments are welcome.

Wah... nice kapcai there Richard. Apart from the rims, it looks spot on...

At first I thought that the rear indicator is slightly off-scale but looking back at the actual picture, it is actually quite correct. It needs to be slightly thinner though... But since it is in 1/35th scale, I think you have done a very fantastic job on the kapcai. Maybe after this dio build, you can take it up a notch and build a diorama of "Mat Rempits"...

I love the slippers and "terompah kayu". I think this detail will give the overall scene the uniqueness apart from the other fine details (the banana's and kapcai).

Keep up the good work.

dremel - March 3, 2008 03:40 AM (GMT)
Well done sifu, your kapcai and terompah looks so nice to me. keep it up ;)

Thanks guys for the comments. Much appreciated.

QUOTE

Druid, it is slightly off scale. Couldn't find the appropriate round strip rod diameter and also was afraid of the strength for the thin rod to hold the rear indicator. Didn't want to use metal rod as the build up of super glue will show. You'll find how much stronger plastic joints are when bonded with liquid cement as opposed to super glue at right angle joints.

Ya...I'm lucky at 35th scale I can get away with it. "Mat Rempits" Actually what I thought was doing a Saigon scene with a Vietnamese girl in her Baodai outfit on the Cup Cai surrounded by GI's. :D But that would be opening up another can of worms.

QUOTE

That will be classic man... but to show as much of the bike, the rider will be a Pakcik standing next to it about to get on. He'll have some fruit that he bought from the stall. Perhaps a bunch of bananas will be in the basket. At the time wearing of helmets weren't enforced yet so Pakcik will be wearing a songkok (a traditional hat for those not familiar with our culture) and perhaps a pair of terompah (wooden clogs- I've seen them worned by all races especially in markets during those old days).

Oh yes...I won't show him trying to get on the bike itself 'cos he's wearing a sarong. Don't want to expose too much.

Richard.
