Title: Sokol
Description: my new diorama

JBA - January 5, 2008 04:37 PM (GMT)
Hi guys,
As everytime I post a new diorama somewhere, some kind soul from this board just post the link here, i thought I would post the pics first here
So that's the Sokol diorama, it's supposed to be set in a Russian swamp in the early 1920's, the guy is uh, an auto portrait as a Hungarian Red Hussar!
I took those pictures pretty fast earlier today outside and the weather was really terrible, so most of those will not be definitive (can't get the blue of the water on the left okay..)

anyway thanks for viewing and...
happy new year to you all!
JB

JBA,

Absalutely awesome.....its just a perfect arts from every angle.....you're da man ;)
how you make the clothes so realistic? what kind of miterials you used??
Glad to see your creation here JBA :)

Aaahh! the gun platform diorama is done!

Simply awe inspiring and a jem to look at. One of the best I've seen JBA.
Like dremel was saying.....you're da man :D
how do you make the clothes so realistic? what kind of materials you used??
I'm particularly interested in the foliage.

You've made Dio making into an artform with your exquisite detailing. I'm going to spend hours referring to it time to time when I build my dios.

Richard.

Happy New Year JB,
seems you had a very good 2007.
I have always enjoyed how you managed to humanise all the war machines and interlaced it to everyday life.
The colours and composition is spectacular as usual. At this rate, you are going to find it hard to find it really hard to make your future dioramas any better!

regards

CK Loo

Thanks a lot for your always great support guys :)
I have been spending *a lot* of time with the groundwork -you see i am quite rivet counter when i am building something, but I tend to be with groundwork too. I have been checking for reference on water plants, and been checking by myself on some French marshes last summer.
As for the clothes.. none of you guys used to/smoke? cigarettes are out of price here for years so i used to smoke some rolled tobacco in my young years. And cigarette paper is just such a great material! it's very flexible and strong enough. idal to do scale clothes, newspapers, books etc.
So i cut the different part, glued those with kid's paper glue, and sealed the whole with superglue.
I will have a SBS out soonish, probably on Armorama, i willpost the link to this specific part when it's out.
As for doing my dioramas any better, I certainly hope so ;)
You see, both this one and Koktebel were rehearsals, those are really tiny dioramas. The next one should be the real deal, it's going to be *huge* and should be done out of all the new techniques i have been experiencing this year. It should be the part of a big French battleship from 1896.
i can rest the day I am the 1/35 Turner when it comes to composition and light :D maybe when i reach 250 years old ;) You see i am not ready to rest just yet :)
thanks once more my friends
JB

JBA ,

Thanks for the genius tips brother ;) ....its unbelievable honestly...I'm just can't get a fact how do you turn the cigarette paper to the clothes...i mean the design. And you must be a very good tailor then. :D

And again thanks a lot JBA ;)

I wish can be an artist like you in future.......

Excellent details and Beautifully rendered from the water lilies to the clothes on line JB. I like the interplay of colors where the blue of the water bounces off nicely against the green of the deck which is a different shade to the water vegetation and the touch of red on the figure's pants draws attention to it as a center piece.

The bending of the water grasses just below the water surface is a true study in detail and having viewed your past work before JB I know the preparations and attention of detail even before this dio was started is incredible.

Thanks for sharing this beauty with us my friend.

Excellent work there JB. I love how you did the water. The roots under the water, the mud, the rusting of the platforms... everything looks perfect even the hanging shirts and pants... :)

Thanks a million my friends :) :)
CK Tang, you paved the way with your groundwork SBS, this was the first time I ever read something that serious about groundwork in scale!

Anyway, i want you to understand what's behind my diorama, and what i want to acheive with light.
You see, i want to "direct the light" like you would do for a painting or even a 3D composition.
So i put those 6 pictures below for you to see what I mean. The front is bathed by the sun, you've got specular lights on the funnel, guns, the guy, the plants, the clothes have a yellow tint etc etc, then, as much as you go on the back, the light change, you are into the SHADOW! the green gets darker and duller, the clothes are painted in white and grey etc
thanks once more!
JB

Ah, so this is the finished diorama. I did see the earlier posts on fabricating the gun platform.

It's outstanding! Excellent work.

This one definately wins the "Sexyness" award not just bcos the guy is topless but for the beautiful play of colors and the excellent execution.
U can almost feel the wind blowing.
