Title: 1/12 Honda Rs1000 Endurance Racer

druid_99 - December 28, 2007 02:08 AM (GMT)
Ok, another build from me. This time I'm building a 1/12 Tamiya Honda RS1000 Endurance Racer. It is an old kit but from the looks of it, it can be assembled into a nice bike even if you build it OOB, which is how I will be building it. Shown below are the box art.

The instruction is of the usual Tamiya standard, clear and easy to understand. In the model kit that I have, there are two instruction sheet. One is in English and the other in Japanese (for Japan market).

Ok, next, I'll start with the build.

druid_99 - December 28, 2007 02:19 AM (GMT)
I start with the engine first. Looking at the instruction, there are four steps to build the engine as shown below.

So, first I identify the parts that needs to be used.

Then as usual the cutting, sanding and smoothing steps is done. Luckily there is not much fleshing on the model (usual Tamiya quality) and non-existance of sink molds. So the engine is a very fast build.

Bike?? nice subject.....keep it coming bro ;)

druid_99 - December 28, 2007 02:31 AM (GMT)
Thanks bro... nak tukar angin sikit... hehehe...

When the cutting, sanding and cleaning process is done, all the parts are primered, then it is given a coat of black base coat except for the carburator nozzle which should be painted white.

After the black base coat, I mask the areas that needs to stay black and apply a mixture of Gunze Silver and Gunze Super Silver on the engine parts (thanks to the tip by Captain Kirk). I also spray Gunze Gold on the carburator parts. After the paint is thoroughly dried, I assemble all the parts as well as adding the cables on to the engine.

Shown below is the partially completed engine. I did not add the plugs and other cablings yet.

Then I move on to the body parts of the bike. As usual, the tank and seat halves (this is a Tamiya old kit, so it is not molded in full) needs to be assembled and because I'm rushing to assemble the parts, it has slightly missalligned when dried and I have to fill it with putty and sand it.

That's all for now. As usual, comments and criticisms are welcome. :D

druid_99 - December 28, 2007 03:50 AM (GMT)
I forgot to mention, I have two of this model kit so I will be building the full cowl version as well as the half cowl version. For this, I will be building the half cowling version. :D

Some update...

Not much is done during the weekend. I just manage to assemble the exhaust and do some work on the front fender.

The exhaust did not provide much hassle apart from some allignments needs to be done as the pegs provided did not allign nicely with one and the other. I remove the peg and just glued the pipies to the muffler section. Everytime I fit an exhaust pipe, I will always fit it while attaching it to the engine block to make sure it fits nicely. All gaps will be filled with either epoxy or putty.

The other parts that I've worked with is the front fender. Since this will be a half-cowl version, I have cut off the remaining cowl as per Tamiya's instruction. It is easily cut off as Tamiya has provided the groove for the cut to be done so I just follow the groove with a sharp knife to cut the parts and glued them together. The allignment is a bit off that I need some putty and sanding to get it corrected. The putty is applied and it is waiting to be sanded.

That's all for today. Comments and suggestions appreciated. :D

Some more update...

I've added more wiring on the bike. This time I added the oil hose. I've added some detail using Bare Metal Foil on the oil hose.

user posted image

Then it is attached to the engine. Shown below is the engine with the additional plumbings.

user posted image

user posted image

When that is done. I turn my attention to the exhaust area. I painted the whole exhaust semi-gloss black. Then with careful masking, I painted the muffler Gunze's super silver and Tamiya's Metallic Grey for the muffler ring. Shown below is the close-up of the muffler. Notice the different shades on the muffler with the muffler fastener (ring) on the front and back?

user posted image

When that is done, I continue with the rest of the exhaust. For this bike the instruction says that only the middle part of the exhaust assembly is in semi-gloss black. The exhaust that starts from the engine right to the middle should be painted in the mixture of Metallic Grey and Red Brown. That's what I do. I mix both the colours and painted the exhaust part. I even keep the left-overs for the next bike.

user posted image

With that the exhaust part is done and shown below is the completed exhaust set-up.

user posted image

And I just couldn't resist to dry fit the exhaust with the engine... It fits perfectly!!!...

user posted image

Now for the shock absorbers. I painted the shock absorbers with the combination of white, super silver and some Bare Metal foil to complete it. Luckily the part is separated making the painting and assembling a very easy task.

Shown below is the other parts that I have also painted and complete except for the rims that needs to be masked and painted silver.

:o meleleh my saliva

does the bare metal foil stick firmly on the oil hose?
i tried wt aluminium foil last time, didn't work the way i supposed :(

dremel - January 11, 2008 02:13 AM (GMT)
I always like your works bro......very neat.Do you'll add any weathering for the engine?

druid_99 - January 14, 2008 12:29 AM (GMT)
Klay: The Bare-metal does stick firmly on the oil hose. It has its own adhesive so I don't have any problems with it not sticking on the hose.

Dremel: Thanks bro. I might just add some light weathering, maybe some black-washing on the engine as I wanted to replicate it as a show-bike prior it is put on track... :D

druid_99 - January 18, 2008 06:49 AM (GMT)
A little update...

Since the rims is already painted black, all that it needs is some masking (very tedious one as well) before I can apply some silver paint. It took me more than 20 minutes to mask a rim.
user posted image

After the silver paint is applied, the masking tape is removed... though tedious masking job is needed, it is worth it don't you think?
user posted image

Another bike part that gets the masking and painting treatment...
user posted image

Ok, now that the rims are done, I will work with the rubber tyres next... I'll show you guys how I remove the excess rubber on the middle of the tyres...

Shown below is the rubber tyre provided with the model kit, notice the excess rubber in the middle.
user posted image

Using my trusted (but terribly worn out) nail file, I use the coarse side to remove the thick rubber.
user posted image
user posted image

Then I move to the next step, using the No. 2 grit...
user posted image
user posted image

Next I use the No. 4 grit to further smoothen the surface.
user posted image
user posted image

And finally the No. 7 to give the tyre some shine... :D
user posted image
user posted image

When that is done, the tyres are smooth, a bit worn off and without anymore excess rubber.

Nope... no intention of using any aftermarket parts on this build. I'm building this OOB only. :D

I like the way you show you wips.. you did it very well, nice and clean. I guess you did a very good job.. i really tabik at your work and will follow on your progress. Keep it up. Maybe you can do more bikes after this, hehe.. :P

Thanks Feizar. To tell you the truth. I've actually messed up the build a few days ago :( .

I was trying to add some blackwash to add depth to the engine but it ends up removing the Gunze silver paint as well. I will have to build this bike in a full-cowling version for now. The half cowling version will be build afterwards with clean engine and all...

i guess this happens to almost everyone druid.. glad you've taken a nice pic of it before it happens.. (buat kenangan). I know it's kinda kills the building mood <_< . Hope you can show us the finished product. :D

druid_99 - December 16, 2008 12:52 AM (GMT)
Ok guys, after nearly a year this project is stored away, I finally decided to get this build finished. The black-washed engine did not look that bad after all so I'm not going to do anything more with it, just continue and finish this build.

The battery compartment has been glued onto the frame and the rear tyre assembly has been fixed to the frame as well.

The cowling has been sanded, primed with Mr. Surfacer 500 and then top coated with Mr. White Base. I left it to dry before painting the red paint (maybe tonight).

Dry fit on the frame. It started to look like a bike now... :D

nice nice to see some bikes back in action

but the engine block cover (tak tau ape name), just above those heat-sink fin parts, the seam line/fitting gap look quite spoil ler <_< ...

and how u create the effect on the 2 hose (the parts painted wt dark blue), from bare-metal foil wrapping :P ?

Well, it troubles me as well but then after the cowling is attached onto the frame, it will not be visible so, I won't be doing anything about it... (furthermore the engine is already attached in the frame... if I were to take it out, it will take me another year before I have the motivation to continue... hahaha...

As for the chrome parts on the pipes, I use Bare-Metal and wrap around it but if you notice the most current picture that the foil is no longer there because it did not stick well to the surface...

Wah druid_99...ur RS1000 reminds me when i'm a newbie on assembling model kits...i still recall that i build this kit straight OOB without coloring cos is my 2nd kit after Honda CR450 with Jumping riderand no $$$ to buy paints...

Nice to see you continue on this build and is neatly done with detailing...cool..I guess this will be a half-cowl version and not the 24hours Endurance version huh..Gosh! makes me wanna redo my RS1000....u bad la druid_99... :P

Anyway....hope to see you final result k... ;)

klay - December 16, 2008 02:32 AM (GMT)
yup.. i see ^_^

true true.. being too perfectionist usually kills the build
sometimes practicality makes more sense to get a kit completed :P

seelianglim - December 16, 2008 02:33 AM (GMT)
My 1st bike was a 1/12 Suzuki GSX 750 Police Motocycle by Tamiya. Hand painted everything AND the gloss white went on very well. I had thinned the paint so that it flows well..
Sorry to hijack other ppl thread. Maybe should start on a bike too
