Title: 1/24 Fujimi Toyota Bb (flamin' Box)

druid_99 - December 7, 2007 02:21 AM (GMT)
Hi all,

This is my 1/24 Fujimi Toyota Bb (Black Box) which I got from Aidy some time back. It was supposed to be a quick build back in April 2006 but as usual, delays after delays and finally while being too lazy to attend to my Junkers, I tried to get this thing done  . It was at 85% finished back then with only minor parts needs to be done so, continuing with this build might be quick.

The paint is Tamiya black with pearl orange on top, giving it some sort of flip paint effect. Under the sun, the paint will be brown with slight orange tint and other parts that is not exposed to direct sunlight will look black. I then decided to add some flames on the body to give some contrast on the body colour.

Below are the pictures before the flame treatment. This picture was taken way back in 2006.

In adding the flames, all I do first is to lay some masking tape on top of the body, then marking the area where the flames should start and end (to get rough idea). Then the masking tape is moved to the cutting mat and the flames are drawn onto the masking tape. When that is done, using a sharp knife I carefully cut the shape of the flames and paste the outlines on to the body and start to paint it.

All this is done not before wetsanding the whole body with 800 and 1000 grit sandpaper for the paint to stick to.

The white paint is applied first before the yellow and finally the red. Some touch ups will still needs to be done before it can be rubbed and polished. When the flame is done, a few layers of clear coat is applied to seal it. It still needs some fine outlines on the flames which I will add later. Shown below is the completed flame treatment...

master imran,

Yup, the flames are airbrushed. Still needs some fine lines on the flames though, and a few more sanding and clear coating to blend the flames onto the body... :D

Well, apart from the body kit and rims, you will be better off buying Tamiya. This Fujimi ones is very simplified that Fujimi did not even include the basic items needed for an actual car.

For starters, the interior is not well detailed. There's only holes for the air-conditioning/heater vents where there should be at least some engraving to replicate the vents. Fujimi also did not put the details on the air-condition heater knobs located on the center of the dashboard, again only holes without any shape or engraving of knobs. Since this should be a fast build, I just left the interior as it is without any additional detail.

The Fujimi Black Box does not even include the rear-view mirror for the driver!!! That is just plain lazy <_< .

Another downside of this model is that the accelerator and brake is non existance. There are nothing, not even a blob of plastic to simulate the accelerator and brake pedal... again, I left this out because I just don't want to start scratchbuilding on a what supposed to be a "fast" build...

All and all, I think it is better off buying and building the Tamiya ones rather than Fujimi's.

Sooo nice lah the flame..

YGTan - December 10, 2007 01:01 AM (GMT)
Nice old school flame job Imran.

One question, how are you going to do the flame's outline? Free hand?

druid_99 - December 11, 2007 12:57 AM (GMT)
shahrs: Thanks.

YGTan: Thanks and you are correct, I'm going to do the outlines free-hand.

Some update. The body is wet-sanded again after a few coats of clear. Shown below is the body that has been sanded and waiting for another layer of clear coat.

Ok. That's all the update on the body. I'll show you guys the interior pulak. I painted it in two-tone scheme which is black and tan. The linings on the seat is drawn using mechanical pencil.

Note the very simplified interior. Even the door panel has no other details other than the armrest.

This is a close-up view of the driver's side. Note that there are no brake and accelerator pedals in existance (not even a molded on foot pedal). Note also the very lousy detail (or lack of it) of the air conditioning vents (at least some lines to represent the vents is sufficient if the Fujimi guys are too lazy to get it done) as well as the air conditioning/heater control knobs (should be in the chrome panel rather than a simple hole).

That's all the updates for the moment on this build. Hopefully I can complete it in a few days (or weeks)

Delightful surprise Imran, never thought you'd be into K-car tuning. Any Neon underbody lights?

Well, as long as it can at least pull people's attention to it, I'll build it.... I have two more of this K-Car in my stash that might get the same treatment... Furthermore it has been quite some time for me doing flames on model cars.

Neon underbody lights??? You got any alternative for that? Any way I can do it???

hey..nice car. i like the rims a lot. i realised the most (if not some) Fujimi kits have bumpers built onto the body itself, whcih is not detacheable. i think this is to reduce the cost, making Fujimi cheap to buy. :D

I think Fujimi does that mainly because of simplicity. Since most of their models are curb side models so, it won't need detachable bumpers. Usually, they will build bodies with separate bumpers only if the model comes in many variations with different bumpers.

i cant wait to see the final build. sure will be very nice. too bad i don't have the cash to buy an airbrush

It is basically collecting dust...

Just need some motivation to continue with the build. It is actually already 85% to 90% completion and it only needs some sanding and polishing to complete it. That's what really sets me off. Got to get the right "mood" to polish the car.

Maybe I'll get it done in a few days time (if I don't get distracted with my other builds lah)...

I'm looking for alternatives besides LEDs as well, was looking at some of those 'glow' sticks that kids use as play-things or some pubs give-out as door gifts, those flourescent type thingies (snap-break & it glows in the dark).

But don't know how it'll appear (if at all) in pic-taking tho' & so far those i've found are too large in size, length & diameter.

Druid, how's the bB coming along?

druid_99 - April 21, 2009 03:19 AM (GMT)
Ok guys, after a few months collecting dust, finally I have a bit of time to start on the compound and polishing stage.

Thanks for the comments guys...

Looking back at the thread, I realize that this is one of the many long builds that I have in the stash.... The build starts on 2006, than update a bit in 2007, then a bit of update in 2008 and the polishing stage is just done in 2009... wow... talk about the time taken to complete a 1/24 scale model car... curbside pulak tu... and it is not even completed!!!! (This will be completed for SMM09... it is my KPI... hahhaah)
