Title: Compressor
Description: Drain your air tank.
myone - October 8, 2007 10:07 AM (GMT)
Something interesting to share.
My 10 month old baby needed some maintenance. I drained it only once before when it was 1st delivered AND it's never been moved.
I opened the air tank nut, about 10ml of thick oil leaked out and messed up the floor  I then attached a tube to a syringe and sucked out the balance inside ->

It's oil + rust + water.. 60ml accumulated inside over 10 months of very very minimal usage.
PoohBear - October 8, 2007 10:15 AM (GMT)
You should have seen how much mine accumulated over 8 years...
KIRIN - October 8, 2007 11:20 AM (GMT)
Few months back, I open the air tank of my mum abandoned 22 years frigde, the liquid inside is more than a teh-tarik glass. :o
PcEvo - October 8, 2007 03:15 PM (GMT)
Just to share with you all.....
If these water stays in the tank too long, the steel can rust and cause a leak or rupture, which would ruin the air compressor.
So take care of your 'baby'... ;)
YGTan - October 9, 2007 03:08 PM (GMT)
I found about half a cup of milo-o the 1st time I drain my air tank. Now I drain the tank after completing each build.
creature666 - October 10, 2007 03:00 AM (GMT)
Hmm...
i tot most compressor tank r equip with 1 realease valve for waste water capture inside the tank, but not colling compressor lah.I usually will realease the valve of the tank 1 every 3 month, got a bit of water only.n also some tiny oil can see on the water surface.
So do carry ur maintain frequanly to prolong ur equipment lifespent.Dont be lazy lol

Hi there,
Do you know where to get nice compressor ?
my budget is less that RM300.

Hi Sagaziz,
You can try give Mr Low of HHQ a call. But I doubt the price would be within that range. I think you can get a decent one around RM500. I would highly recommend a piston type over the diapraghm type.

Guys,
Just asking if anyone tried this before? In a local hardware shop I saw a cheap (RM299) industrial type compressor c/w air tank (and wheels and stroller bar). Size is about 3ft x 2ft x 3ft kind of. Does not look pretty inside a house though. But it got me thinking since I paid close to RM700 for the unit I purchased in KLCC shop, and it's not even branded (I'm not from KL ok). The expensive unit is still working but if anyone has successfully attempted this possibly economy option, I'm all ears....
regards,
Geoffrey

I believe industrial compressors have a disadvantage in that they are extremely noisy. Even if you can stand the noise, you probably won't be able to work late nights and if you do, don't be surprised if your neighbours stop talking to you and start giving you threatening stares from then on.
Argrillion - February 28, 2008 07:18 AM (GMT)
Advantage of using industrial compressor .... it is able heat-up the room (provided you really need the heat).

Geoffrey..
Its a NO...NO...
I had the same idea a few years back until a contractor came to my office to do some renovation equipped with the compressor you mentioned earlier.
ITS LOUD !
You wouldn't want such noise in your house. Especially with kids.. neighbours.. grand pa, grand ma.. akademi fantasia...
Be patience. Save up and get a hobby compressor. Very much "home friendlier". B)

i dunno how Akademi Fantasia fits in the equation of purchasing compressor but yea.. save a lil bit and get the hobby compressor... save you the trouble of getting a pair of ear-plug and possibly save you from the problem explaining it to the neighbour, grand pa, grand ma & akademi fantasia :D

Kuman,
This is how it works....
Equation 1
industrial compressor + loud noise X wife cannot concentrate on AF showing on
TV = NO MORE SCALE HOBBY IN THE HOUSE
Equation 2
hobby compressor + silent X wife also don't realise and she can concentrate on AF = peaceful hobby session
I don't know about you but I prefer equation 2 B)

Actually guys, I use a commercial compressor at home and it's not that noisy.
With doors closed it's quite bearable. The only scary part is when the valve activates to stop the motor, it gives off a short loud hiss of air. This depends on how much air you want stored in the tank.
This compressor survived the flood having submerged for 24 hrs in muddy water. Really tough.
Richard.

Woah! Poopeh, yours must one huge pump to make all that noise. Mines a medium sized version about 2 feet across (the tank). Actually if I sit the wheels on rubber foam, the noise can be dampen a little more. They're heavy so the vibration noise transends to the floor so your neighbor basically will feel the noise vibration more than the noise itself.
Either way I feel sorry for your neighbor.
Richard.
Poopeh - March 31, 2008 05:10 AM (GMT)
My air tank is about 2 feet long. Inherited it from my brother so I have no idea how many horse power that is and all the signages on the tank is obscured by oil and dust. Having seen a 1/2 horse power compressor, i guess my one is about 1 horsepower.
Maybe because the compressor is old technology that's why it is noisy?
I should try the foam method suggested. Thanks rtfoe.
Really poor neighbours. That's why I can't airbrush late at night. Maybe that's why jason isn't keen for me to buy a house next to his :D :D

helo, donno where to ask,but maybe here can...i got prob with my AC...anybody ever used this type of AC?

(sory, canot provide a proper pic, since my cam got prob, try to upload back later the pic)...this morning when i tried to use my AC, suddenly air came out from red circle part, which b4 this never happened when im using it....and i can see that the pointer at pressure gauge wasn't moving, unless i close the hole at the red circle part...can it be fixed??....is it was caused by any valve/rubber ring failure/expired in the comp
Argrillion - April 26, 2009 12:36 PM (GMT)
Looks like a punctured hose you have there N42gul. Please photograph the red-circled area of your compressor. The black box is probably the high pressure switch which stops the compressor when the air tank is completely filled. If air continues to leak out from where you say it is, you are not gonna get a lot air deliver to your airbrush.

I'm also using an industrail compressor... when it start pumping again, I closed the window and door. So far no complains frm my neighbour till now. I will try your foam method, thanks.
a full tank of air takes around 90 seconds to be fill up, and it last for bout 1hr of spraying.
modelsinfinescale - April 26, 2009 04:57 PM (GMT)
Of compressor noise and neighbors. Have those using such industrial units ever tried going over to the neighbor's while the contraption is on and listen for himself?
I have.
I live in an apartment and do my work on a collapsable worktable ( not workbench, poorest modeler ). And I use a commercial unit with a tank which is around two feet long. Conveniently a relative lives upstairs so I could up and listen for myself. Sure I can hear something and they'd know whenever it's on. BUT, it's only a whirring sound which can't even distract their TV viewing. Richard is right. It's more vibartion than sound. I don't even use foam as dampers ( but will soon, thanks for the tip ). If you live in a semi detach should not be a problem at all using those 'loud' units. If you want to play it even safer then don't place it near the ajoining neighbor's wall. It's best to get to know your neighbor better. That way both can air their problems without being confrontational. Back to the compressor, I leave the tank empty if I'm not going to use it regularly. No air, no condensation, no water. There's hardly any moisture in my tank. The moisture trap or 'filter' does help I think. In fact I was disappointed expecting a gush but only got a few drops after going on the floor like a car mechanic to release the drain nut.
Mine cost RM240. Bought at a hardware store. Made in China or Taiwan ( ? ). Going strong after five years and changed the oil only once. The idea is to not let it start up too often if you can help it ( having enough air supply for the job at hand ). Less running of the motor less wear and tear. Oh, I don't get startled anymore coz when it's about to start up there's a click which I take as a warning.
Cheers
Patrick

recently I just bought a 2nd hand air compressor, and it is using fridge 1/4 hp, very quiet and compact. I was lucky to met a friend of mine who introduce me to someone who would like to sell it off. that compressor only used 1 year ago. It is good as new.
When I bring back, I try open up the tank set screw and drained off the water, so much oil, water and rusty particle come out. Seems like this guy didnt take care of it.
Now, at night, I will AB until morning 3am and no one can complain already. only can hear pss pss pss pss

Fridge compressors are noted to be extremely quiet. You do not realise it when starting or running as it is silent. Only by touch you know it is running as slight vibration felt.
Best of all it runs 24hrs day after day like a fridge.
Such compressors are best for close living and neighbour friendly.

yes, I do agree what you said. However, I usually use less than 2 hrs, cos it is compact and I have tried before open the whole cover and touch the compressor, and it is hot, I do not want the compressor to be over heated.
Actually I hv someone selling at Rm1500++ but that one is really really good, cos once it is hot, it will auto shut off and will switch on again when it is cool down.
And it also come with a bulid in fan to blow out the heat. That one really nice but too expensive for me.

Didn't want to start another thread so I'll just hitchhike on this one. I'm having a small problem with my compressor's pressure switch. There's a tear in the rubber diaphragm so air leaks out and the switch doesn't disengage as a result. Also the compressor can't sustain pressure above 1.5 bar because of this.
I tried to repair the leak by sealing the hole with silicone rubber but it doesn't work so I think I'll have to get a new pressure switch (or at least a new diaphragm). Does anyone here know where I can purchase a new one?

My old trusty compressor

Any fridge experts here? My compressor (powered by a fridge compressor) needs an oil change. I checked with a few fridge repair shops and they say they don't usually refill the oil. They just replace the whole compressor with a new one!
Anyone can point me to a shop that sells it? I think it's called "refrigeration oil".

If I'm not mistaken, you can use motorcycle oil (2 stroke engine).

I read on the web about this guy who used ATV oil in the fridge compressor. It works but it also releases fumes!

Don't know if this will help but when I visited Art Friends at MidValley, The Gardens last Sunday, I saw some bottled containers of oil next to their badger compressors (their compressors are for industrial use, very big and heavy too, and uses oil). Not sure in this oil is universal but maybe you could give them a call?

My compressor uses diesel engine oil. However the compressor is not from fridge.
