Title: 'nam Stuff
Description: from Harry

modelsinfinescale - October 7, 2007 12:05 PM (GMT)
Guys,
When I last posted a pic of a 'Nam figure I did to represent my client, Harry ( Bill to his buddies ) some of you were interested to see some Vietnam items. I'm posting them here with his permission. Harry has sent me lots of pics of his framed autograph/veteran photos collection ( 101st, Enola Gay crew ) covering entire wall sections of his private museum which he also filled with dioramas using the figures I did for him. He also sent pics from war museums and WWII shows, air shows and conventions.
I'll post those of interest ( too many ) when I find the time.

For the first part here are the 'Nam pics:

Thanks Patrick for putting this useful info especially for our Nam enthusiasts or those wishing to model Nam scenarios. Many thanks to Harry as well.

Good stuff and interesting too, especially the explosives handling. I'm going to move this to the Figure Resource section to avoid this valuable info from being pushed into the archives and for quick easy reference.

Hi Patrick,

Thanx a million for the resourceful pictures.... Like U're reading my mind, I'm actually planning to paint (eerrrr... some minor conversion lar, U know me heheh) a Kirin 120mm US 82nd airborne. Bought this kit cheap cheap price curtesy from Allan years back...

Well I still have problem identify the camo scheme of the NAM US helmet cover.

- From movies, most of the helmet cover look single color flat fade off Nato green...
- But from the pict U've posted, there's evidence of camo scheme... it looks brownish compare to the Nato green base uniform... Is it due to the Nam dirt envirnment or some fade off camo effect?
- Are they using Modern Nato 3 color scheme? Or some others which I haven't known of?

Anyone out there are welcome to lend a helping hand ... or any clear original pict of the camo will hep...

Thanx in advance

CP I'm no expert but the helmet featured in Patrick's posting has a canvas, camo cover. Not all helmets had covers though the pics I've seen of Marines in Nam, many of them do. Without the cover, the helmets are actually olive drab faded heavily depending how long the helmet and its occupant had been in-country.

If you need some additional references drop by, coz I have some magazines and other reference materials for Nam.

Glad you guys apperciate it. There's more - aircraft, armor and small arms and I'm trying to get Harry to resend me the pic he took with Mail Call's Lee Ermey at one of History Channel's events. Lee or 'Gunny' is also a vet. I have the e-mail address if you want to pose a question to him. So, maggots ! Fall in if interested. Semper Fi......

I've handled an actual 'Nam GI helmet ( xxxxxxx heavy ), seen the unfaded inside and it's OD like CK says. Any shade of this much argued color is OK as long as you don't paint it pink. Go with what you'd put on a Sherman and it'll be correct.
Btw CP I voted for your Bukit Kepong dio. More for the effort you put in modifying the figures and your research. A stiff competitor would be the 1/16 Wiking Div figure. He's goood.....

Cheers
Patrick

Hey,

U know It's like one of those strange happening when U decided to give up? I've been searching for the original camo pattern on the canvas cover for the US army in Vietnam for so looong already... with no result.

When I was just gonna give up searching the net, "poof" google show me this:

Leaf Camo

This camo is NOT the Nato 2 tone but unique by itself. They call it "Leaf" or "Mitchell" camo scheme... surprisingly only used in Vietnam war specially for US helmet canvas cover only.

Talk about luck heh.... :P

Patrick, Thanx for Ur vote and support. I know the SS Wiking is really good... as we all know that this is merely mark on voting rather a contest. Just hope I'm lucky enough :-)

Beach,
I'm surely interested to take a look at Ur ref book when we have another "secret" meeting.... hehe

Great photos, Patrick.

This is the first time I see the 'Geneva Convention' hand-out. These photos will be very helpful for my LVTP5 diorama.

Thanks a lot!

CP the leaf scheme you've shown is something I have not encountered in the pics I've seen or at least I don't remember seeing it.

If you still looking around here is another, pretty standard helmet cover pattern.
Reversisble helmet cover, Vietnam
