thanks for the pics bro.

PoohBear - September 3, 2007 09:27 AM (GMT)
Yup, thanks for sharing the pics.

Interesting to note the evenly spaced track link connectors painted white. Any idea what's the purpose for that?

druid_99 - September 3, 2007 09:52 AM (GMT)
We really love 'em smoke grenade launcher ye...

Thanks for the pictures Alpha7... it's scratchbuilding time...

Alpha7 - September 3, 2007 10:09 AM (GMT)
My only regret is that I didn't get there earlier as the Astros and Huglands had left by the time I got there.

Jason, no idea what those are for. It didn't occur to me at that time to check if they were also on the other PT-91s. In fact, I can't even remember if they were silver or white. :o

Imran, those smoke grenades sure that a lot of time to make. Maybe you should consider casting yours and selling them.

Alpha 7 thanks for the photos. Great reference material! Theres also a small picture of the PT-91 in the Star, 30th August 2007 (Nation, Pg 14).

Anyone have any idea what kit is close enough to be used to convert to our PTs?

T-72, T-80, available from esci and dragon.

Alpha7 - September 3, 2007 03:27 PM (GMT)
The PT-91M comes from the same lineage as the T-72. Do note that the T-80 on the other hand, is a descendant of the T-64 tank. So you should start off with a T-72 as your base kit.

There is/was(?) a resin kit from Modelkrak that will upgrade the Tamiya T-72 to a PT-91. This brings it a step closer to the PT-91M but from the photos, you can see some differences:

1) Tracks appear to be similar to the T-80 type
2) ERA blocks are in different shapes and layout
3) Fenders and side storage boxes

kuman - September 4, 2007 12:06 AM (GMT)
thanks for this adrian.. :D

aiseh.... my current MiniHobby T-72 is all ready for the paint factory.. else can convert to this tank.. well there's always MGB08 :D

so i believe this tank IS very fresh.. maybe just got off the ship they were transported in... evident by the very clean track.. + the "white" connector..

kerastangan - September 4, 2007 12:46 AM (GMT)
Indeed, The PT-91M has its roots in the T-72 not T-80.

Some difference between the baseline PT-91 and PT-91M

1. Different arrangement of ERA tiles
2. German tracks (from modeling POV, can use Leopard 2 tracks?)
3. Muzzle reference indicator (or whatever it is called) on the muzzle
4. Different stowage box arrangement + stowage basket
5. Different laser warning receiver
6. Different gunner and commander's sights (modelers' POV : can LeClerc's sights be used?)
7. Not fitted this year - Commander's M2HB 12.7mm HMG.
8. Other bumps and bulges on the turret.

Oh I also notice that the unditching beam is painted...

Alpha7 - September 4, 2007 12:49 AM (GMT)
Hi Azlan, I don't think they are fresh. The soldier I spoke to said they were sending it back to Gemas camp where it's based. I think our army quite 'manja' this tank-lah. Can see in the last photo, the other 5 tanks are wrap under canvas. Takut panas ke? :D

dremel - September 4, 2007 02:50 AM (GMT)
Gemas???...my hometown.... :P

They are relatively fresh...haha. IIRC they only arrive earlier in August.

Gemas? Oh must be the combined arms unit ( can't remember the designation) camp there.

Alpha7 - September 4, 2007 03:36 AM (GMT)
According the Wikipedia, it's under Rejimen 11 KAD, which recently relocated from Kota Belud to Gemas.

More references:

These photos are of the PT-91E, which is identical to the PT-91M and offered for export. Some good close-ups of the turret.

From my observation, other than the ERA tiles, other areas that need work are:

1) Fenders - the T-72 and PT-91 front fenders are all metal. The PT-91M ones are rubber. The rear fenders are also cut short and come with rubber mudguards.
2) Tracks - PT-91M uses rubber-padded tracks. Maybe 'curi' from a Leopard kit?
3) Turret basket - T-72s don't have a turret basket.
4) Grenade launchers - lots of them
5) Obra-3 Laser Warning sensors - There are 4 of them. 2 located on each side of the main gun and 1 each behind the grenade launcher clusters.
6) Engine deck - I don't have a good photo of the engine deck but it appears to be different from a standard T-72 deck. On the port side on either side of the exhaust, are 2 boxes with vents that are not found on the T-72. On the starboard side, there's a small vent towards the rear.
7) Sagem Optics - the optics on the turret top have to be shaved off and replaced by the boxy SAVAN-15 FCS. There's also a rod-like instrument just behind it. In front of the commander's hatch, there's the VIGY 15 sight and a mount for the M2 browning.
8) Road wheels - PT-91M uses the older 8 bolt design. Some kits may come with the newer 6 bolt ones.

Bomber Vince - April 23, 2008 09:31 AM (GMT)
yup, totaly diffrent, that one have a so-called bracket to hold it, bolted on with 2 bolt on both top and bottom

as u can see, the ERA tiles is totaly diffrent, must scratch build, and there's even anti-skid marks on top.

I will start some work tonight, since I've completed one hornet.

kindredd - April 24, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
Go go go Vince!

That will be fun if some one to start this as a Merdeka Group Build 2008. Any hand?

*If yes, better start a new topc at 'In-Progress Section'

Since someone posted shots of the Tiger factory, here's one I found on militaryphotos.net of the Pendekar factory. I wonder if the 7th photo from the top means that they have all 48 of our tanks made?

Loo CK - February 16, 2009 03:27 AM (GMT)
BTW,
what's happening to the armor GB for Merdeka? Are you guys still on for the modern tanks?? Another 6 months. Just nice

druid_99 - February 16, 2009 04:24 AM (GMT)
I'll be continuing my Pendekar build for the MGB09... just a little bit more to be done and all the additional items has arrived.

Bomber Vince - February 16, 2009 04:30 AM (GMT)
Maybe I should revive my pendekar project.

According to my military forum buddies, all 48 plus the support vehicles have all been delivered.

And rumour has it that actually we do not have 48 but probably twice that number. Anyway its just rumours....
