Title: WOW! A really amazing diorama

xamel1975 - June 15, 2007 01:47 AM (GMT)
From Missing-Lynx site, a diorama called "Herr Hauptman's Champagne" by Rhodes A. Williams.

Truly an amazing work! I love the underwater wreck. Looks realistic. Notice that there is water dripping inder the diver's arm. Now that's what I call an eye for details.

Amazing! The details of the sunken vessel is incredible. Thanks for the link.

From concept to detail simply amazing. There is so much detail on the tug boat itself from the sunburned faces of the men, to their uniform, to the clutter on the deck to each individual rivet. Fantastic idea to use a smoky, blue glass which really conveys both depth and a watery feel despite the fact its just air. The Desert Yellow of the tug contrasts beautifully with the deep blue water surface.

Definitely more than 100 hours of work easy. Yes the waves are too close given the depth and perhaps some of the corals are a wee bit thick and not much barnacles actually stick to rubber tires these are minor details on what is truly a excellent dio. Plus I always have a weak spot for non-combat dios.

Thanks Harman for highlighting this gem.

100hrs? Took him 20 months to do it.

beachbum - June 15, 2007 03:52 AM (GMT)
That's why I said easily more than 100 man-hours. :) Assuming he works on it 1 hour per day for 5 days per week..multiply that by 4 weeks per month and then by 20 months it comes up to 400 hours.

If ever I'm able or capable of doing anything even close to this it would probably be my last dio and I can retire happy.

Ah..okay. I was too spaced out to do the math. :)

Im speachless... :o .. Sooo beautiful the dio.. Really an art that I wish I can master..

kindredd - June 15, 2007 05:58 AM (GMT)
Really quite astounding. The level of detail is fantastic. Something for us to aspire to.

I've not read through the thread as connection for me is really slow. If I had to guess I would say it is very likely the top portion with the blue waves is a material called Artist gel/resin. The side glass are actually tinted blue glass which is slightly opaque to give the slight blur effect.

sunnyboy - June 15, 2007 08:41 AM (GMT)
is it that the top is by a layer of glass, then adding clear gel to form the shape of wave?

That is very much how the modeller did it. So, sunnyboy... use this idea la for your BAKUC entry!

Hmmm... this gives an idea on how to build me and my bro's "Bismarck wreck" dream diorama.

Go for it Harman. Btw you may want to add a small ROV with a searchlight (using LED) hovering above the Bismarck to give the impression of size and scale. Just a thought.
