Bomber Vince - May 8, 2007 04:15 AM (GMT)
I'm now revive back my long dead WIP, I think it's the German Type XXI U-boat, it's the one without the side tanks.

Need help on the sesources.

beachbum - May 8, 2007 04:56 AM (GMT)
Vince I've posted some of these links before somewhere in one of the sub threads but here they are again together with a salvaged XIC boat but unfortunately not the Type XXI in the museum. Hope the links still work. Let me know if they don't:

Good overview of all U-boats
Excellent resource for U-boats
Museum restored XIC boat

Good hunting Herr Kapitanleutenant Vince.

just cut out the flood hole yesterday and primed, still a lot to sand and putty, first generation MIC kit mar, if I'm not mistaken it's a copy of Revell kit.

Blackheart

Thanks for your info, Bty mine is the Type XXI U-boat, it's the final version of U-boat, and only 2 was successfully build and on duty while the rest was destroyed by alies bombing before construction.

Vincent,

You can check out this link - Naval e-books. There's a couple books on the U-boat that might interest you.

thanks for the link Viper, but I'm having problem downloading, all the download links are actually links to adds...

koowilliams - May 15, 2007 06:12 PM (GMT)
vince, it will most probably open up to DEPOSIT FILE site... click download and not buy, then u can follow instruction from there on... if it is still the ads to show up... try to look for some clickable item which state something like "skip advetisement" or anything other similar to that...

Bomber Vince - May 16, 2007 02:56 AM (GMT)

here's the progress of my U-boat during the naval group build taken by CK Loo,

most of the flood holes are cut and some deepened, thanks to Chow's diamond grinding bits.

Vince,

Let me know if you still have problems with the download and I'll try to pass you the e-book (and other U-boat ones I got) at one of the upcoming SFTPMS events. It's about 30+ Mb so unfortunately I can't send it via e-mail to you.

BTW, your boat's looking good. Can't wait to see the finished product. :)

Here's my ugly baby, primed and panel lines re-scribbed

Some of the casualties of heavy sanding, this is a motorized kit so it comes with an openal side panel, it left a lot of big seams after glued, tooks me quite some time to fill and sand smooth.

the rear rudder area of this kit is empty and comes with a propeler, I've covered the area with plaplate.

Some of the flood holes are cut off, wtill with bit of cacat...

the props in type XXI is made by cast iron instead of brass, I dabbed the props with thick light grey before I hand painted with gunze stainless.

Finally makes my self to the NGB, just join for fun. don't dare to compete with all the sifus..... Personally I don't think the U-2540 was that rugged looking in the history, it dosen't been throught a lot of battle. the one in the German Naval Museum was fully restored.

But as an armour guy, I just cant acept something new and clean.

The stand are the ones from the kit, a nice one but bits of sanding and filling required, the golden holders were sprayed with yellow then with "Thai Gold" an industrail paint.

The wooden area are varnish with diffrent tones of brown to get the wooden effect.

Found some mistakes after completion.
1. railings are not well alligned, some bends towards a side (maybe the Germans sailors likes to wrestle on the deck)
2. AA gun twisted
3. Two wires missing, I skipped that coz I have no good reference on that, will add it later.

Please feel free to comments, critics are welcome too, I'll try my best to build better next time.

Many thanks to Loo for the excelence pics taken....

Hey Vince, one cannot be good in everything, right? I may have a bit of skill in figure scratchbuilding and painting, but no good in diorama. I once build a tank, no matter how I "wheather" it, still looks like a toy :-D

Frankly speaks, the 700 Bismarck is my 2nd ship, I think it's the PE that do the wonder, not my skill lar. My first ship was ZhongShan Gun boat

If we're to compare, I think Ur ship weathering skill (rusty) on the sub is very good, I'll gladly learn from anyone who's willing to give some pointers...:-)

my method of weathering is based on try an error, for this subject, I use poster color. My second weathering is too heavy, thanks god i use poster color coz it's more forgiving then oils,

I tone down the weathering using cotton bud to get the desire effect. Lastly a add in the "new rust"

Bro, I will sure need ur help on figures coz I need to mod a Malaysian soldier comming out from the back door of MIFV.

Hi Vince, nice work and thumbs up for your rusty U-boat.

Just a questions as I'm also building the same XXI boat, what is the light grey and dark grey you use? I prefer gunze color, thanks.

Bomber Vince - July 27, 2007 05:07 AM (GMT)
Thanks for ur attention Kirin,

the grey tone is No 11 and the Dark grey effect are from black + bits of white, I spray in verry thin coat, 30% paint and 70% thinner. Using the layering technic to build up the tones.
