Description: My first compy entry..
kindredd - April 24, 2007 05:45 AM (GMT)
Hi guys,
With much trepedition, I present to you my work in progress for the upcoming SEED/SEED DESTINY Gundam competition. I don't expect to win anything given my very newbie skills, but hey, never try never know right?
So I present the DESTINY NOIR! Please feel free to comment/kutuk. I will try to wear bullet proof vest...
The original version...

My inspiration

Sanding, test fit and srayed with el cheapo Anchor cans

How it looks so far...

Cant decide between gold or silver hands...

Next up, fix the seams at the shoulders and the knees, paint the wings and weapons

Finally, order decals from Samuel decals and do a bit of weathering...dont know if I have time for a dio...
koowilliams - April 24, 2007 06:44 AM (GMT)
try to cover up those seams line next time, buddy... if u don't, then make it BIGGER so that it looks like a VENT, or movable parts...
i wish you best luck to u on the competition...!

Thanks man.
Am working on the seam lines now, especially the shoulders and the knees. Still not sure if I want to modify the shoulder pads, ad on a little pla plate and some metal rods, hence the reason why I havent fixed the lines yet. Dont know if the kit will look better with or without weathering...maybe I will experiment a little. Anyone else have any comments? :)

u mean u goin to cover seamline after painting process?
kindredd - April 24, 2007 10:16 AM (GMT)
Uh..what I meant was, I planned to put some pla plates to cover the seam lines and repaint it again. But you are right. In retrospect, I should have made all those changes before painting not after.

icic....c u during the compy time la... ;)

After a long break, I have been frantically trying to make up for lost time to complete my model before the SEED Contest.
Anyways, heres the work in progress...
Halfway done, decals from Samuel decals. Close up shot

Just finished the wash, add a few more add on modifications and finally to add clear coat (matte) and weathering.
Dio groundwork using Puttyfilla and sand

I will be adding light slate coloured sand, red rocks and some dried burnt out vegetation, airbrushing basic colours (mixture of light brown, grey and red) then finally a wash and handbrushing highlights. This is going to be a desert dio, with a hint of a dying forest slowly being enfulged by the sand.
Heres how the build should look like..I am trying for a sort of artistic approach to the dio, a sort of Michelangelo feel. At this point the posing for the Gundam feels a little....feminine.

Heres the question, what do you guys think of the pose? The overall feel so far? I undertand that theres not much to look at but really would appreciate your feedback before I finalise the dio. BeachBum if you are out there, care to comment?

Why not bring your dio over to the clinic at Outpost this Sunday for further discussions with Beachbum and lot?
kindredd - May 18, 2007 08:12 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the reply Poohbear,
I am planning to but hopefully want to do more before then. :D We have got to submit our entries by 23rd May so I am starting to feel the pressure  .
This coupled with my very very slow, very newbie building skills is means that I have got to get as much done as possible before the deadline

Best I can tell from the pics everything is quite well composed. You've utilized the 3-D space quite well. I like the frame. Its nice and unusual. Fits in with the hilly terrain well. What happened to your earlier drift wood you showed me to be used for the mountain range? I like the one better but no worries if its already done.An oil wash is better using raw umber. It may be more dramatic if you paint your groundwork Red as it will bounce off your dark colored Gundam better. Alternatively dark yellow is another option. Just a suggestion though.
If its not too late stick a series of jagged rocks starting from small at the back end left corner and gradually building up in height as you go towards your main rock may help force the viewer to focus on your Gundam and make your main rock look more natural as part of a rock formation or mountain range rather than a single mountain sticking out of nowhere.
If the figure isn't stuck on yet you may want to experiment a bit with the stance he's taking. I suppose how dramatic his pose will figure in on the overall score. Having the Gundam face the audience is good and if he has a big gun having the audience look down the barrel would be better. Mind you I know nothing about Gundams though. :)
Now is to decide what to put in the front left corner. With no major changes I should be in this Sunday for the clinic.

Looks pretty dynamic and dramatic as it stands. Good work.
I hope you got my message on the nameplate in the other thread (Gundam Seed Compy) as your Inbox was full. Can't really see the amount of dark wash done from the smaller pics but it should be okay to add more add the base of the small mountain ridge which leads to the main mountain and underneath the main mountain around the fallen gundam.
If you can spare the time drybrushing with a light red almost pink over the sharp edges of the 2 tracks leading to the fallen gundam's legs should emphasize the he slided plus a bit more dark wash at the bottom of these created 'drains'.
Looks like you've chose Rise From the Ashes. All the best and may the Force be with you.

Er...I just noticed your frame - it's kind of unique, but it I'm not so sure that the rolling curves would be a proper mount for a glass cover. You might want to consider keeping the plane flat for your future display case.
Wish you best of luck in your competition. :D
